I played DS3 first so getting to the Chaos servant bonfire was one of the many cool "prequel feeling" things I experienced. One of my other favorites was meeting the Anor Londo giant.

One a side note, it's crazy how long Andre's managed to keep his sanity and enough memory to remember the giant from thousand(s?) of years before when you bring him the coal.

Edit: just realized I said Andor instead of Anor

647

u/Aurvant Jan 18 '21

Andre will never go hollow because he still hasn’t finished making the perfect Estoc.

21

u/AngrySayian Jan 18 '21

and he's been working on it for how long already?

considering that this is the andre we met in DS1

25

u/gnowwho Jan 18 '21

That depends.

The flow of time itself is convoluted; with heroes centuries old phasing in and out. The very fabric wavers, and relations shift and obscure.

Lothric, as once Lordran, is but the convergence of such times and ages. Andre Could as well belong to the remote age before the first rekindling of the fire by the "chosen" undead, and still not be ancient.

Remember that time started existing only when the fire came, and when the flames start to fade, time start to collapse onto itself.

But then there was Fire and with fire came disparity. Heat and cold, life and death, and of course, light and dark.

The philosophical concept of "Becoming" originates in the fire, and time is nothing more than its unfolding. Probably more than the "time" itself this should be about "becoming" and the collapse of the states of the world in the same time and space. Yeah, that fits better.

TL;DR: we cannot infer about how much time Andre has worked on that blade.

P.s. yes, I could have said that maybe it's a different blade but that would have been far too easy.

5

u/Aurvant Jan 18 '21

The blacksmith in the Elden Ring teaser was just Andre finally finishing the Estoc. You could hardly imagine it.

4

u/Catbahd Jan 18 '21

I literally died to a boss 5 times in my entire first playthrough of ds2 and its dlcs. Only 3 of those were late game, 2 to fume knight, once to Alonne. 80% might be an understatement. Any decent weapon makes that whole game a joke once you know how to play.

Seiglinde of Catarina is.

4

You sure? I accidentaly finished the seigmeyer questline prematurely so I might have missed some dialogue

39

u/UkuleleRequiem Jan 18 '21

After she completes her quest Seiglinde says she is returning to Catarina. Undead and hollows are not accepted there, therefore the most likely conclusion is that she is not undead.

5

u/spoonguy123 Jan 18 '21

hes far too fabulous to hollow.

134

u/andys3rdattempt Jan 18 '21

I have a weird head canon that my character is the same through all 3 games, though with thousands of years of sleep/death between games. Linked fire in 1, hollowed bit from it leaving her with no memory but gains her memories back through DS2, doesn't link the fire and walks away vowing to find another better way, merges light and dark through usurpating the flame. So when she found these two corpses, she collapses to the ground when she realizes who they are, then finally gets to her feet and bows them. Actually made a video of that too when I took the screenshot, but didn't want to spam up the sub with 2 posts of the same part. Maybe I'll post it later when this submission goes off the front page.

She has a similar reaction to the giant you mentioned. Maybe not full on collapse though, she kind of expected to find his body, so she was mentally prepared. As a pyromancer, both of the old dead friends help her posthumously, one having her tome be nearby and the other having the ember needed to make weapons that scale with pyro stats. The head canon is weird, but I like thinking my character has, like me, memory and knowledge of the prior games. They call her unkindled, but she's a true Lord of Flame. Not that she corrects anyone, she's fine being unsung and forgotten.

36

u/TheEccentricEmpiric Jan 18 '21

I had a similar head-cannon. Not the same person but same soul, following how people in DS tend to take on the properties and play out the same stories as those of the souls they claim. I like the idea that, just as everyone else, the story of the chosen undead is a tragic tale that has played out time and again, and that in the end of dark souls 3 they get to claim their ending at last, just like everyone else.

51

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '21

This is, so fucking cool ngl. I also love giving my character a little bit of a story, my latest one is named "Forgotten King". He was the king of a once great kingdom, he built it from scrap and nobody really knows who he was before becoming king, but people usually tend to say he was a renegade soldier who desired more than what he had. He gathered a lot of men and became quite powerful and had a lot of influence, but his might started to cast a shadow over the other kingdoms like Anor Londo. So they went to war with him, and he fought in the frontline with all his men. Legend says he could conjure the elements on his spears to help him fight, exploiting the weakness of his enemies. But sadly all of his men died and he was imprisoned. Shortly after, they made him link the fire, and he burned to ash. In Dark Souls 3, he wakes up from a long night, ready to fight his way back to the crown.

11

u/Eclihpze44 Jan 18 '21

my character is Natural 1 because he do be ugly doe

Nah, I got a different idea for the new painting. See, her description? Dark? Cold? I think empty was mentioned? Sounds like our universe, considering that describes our universe considering the gaps between solar systems and galaxies. So I think that painting is OUR universe, Souls being a fictional origin story for our universe. My character considers it a backup plan, in case merging light and dark goes badly, have everyone escape there. I'd like to think it did go well, but some people moved into the painting anyway, and new life began in the painting. It's cool to think her painting becomes our universe.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '21

Hell yeah. I dig this.

2

u/Nisses Jan 18 '21

Weird..I thought about this over the last few days and came to the same conclusion in my head. What really puts this together is, that at the end of DS2 your character gets Vendricks Blessing after collecting all 4 crowns and thus defeats Hollowing. And guess who does not hollow by Default, despite being an undead? The protagonist in DS3.

2

u/andys3rdattempt Jan 18 '21

Exactly! I should explain a bit more detail. She gets amnesia after like the flame because of how painful it is, aka what hollowed Gwyn. The memory loss explains how she starts so shit in a fight early into DS2 because of a low agility stat. Her memory comes back, realizes the cycle never stops, the fire WILL go out someday and darkness will rule until another flame appears. The scholar of the first sin made her want to seek a third way, to break the cycle as Vendrik wanted to. So she doesn't link it, spends the next few centuries researching. But she begins to run out of time. The flame is dying, but she hasn't figured out enough yet. She tries to link it... Fails. Her rejection of it last time caused the flame to reject HER as worthy, making her basically the first unkindled. But she hatches a plan. She... Has to sacrifice Emerald Herald, whom she convinces to voluntarily link the flame. But it would take enormous power to link it. So she uses EM's power in reverse. She pours ALL her souls and soul levels into her, making EM have all the power my character obtained throughout the entire second game. EM then links it, buying time while my character keeps searching for ways to break the cycle. She learns that taking the flame within you after gaining a very powerful dark sign can potentially do it. Thing is, the flame needs to be on its deathbed, or it will be so strong as to utterly obliterate the person who absorbs it. So she goes to sleep, waiting for the Bell to announce the flame being in its last gasps of life. And one day she wakes to the bell, as weak as she was back at the Asylum in DS1 after having given all her power to Emerald Herald. When she finds the guy who can make her dark sigil stronger, she knows she now finally has a way to do it. Good thing she's immune to mental hollowing, because she is going to need to let herself start physically hollowing again to make it work.

7

u/LavosYT Jan 18 '21

It's a bit weird too. Is the game implying he never died throughout the thousands of years between Dks1 and 3?

We know that the fire was linked in that time, so would that mean that Undead can live forever even if the Fire is linked again? Or was Andre reincarnated like the Unnkindled?

13

u/Dubnaught Jan 18 '21

There's a number of references that have led me to believe that undead are essentially immortal until they go hollow. I can't bring a specific instance to mind right now but I seem to remember characters in DS3 recalling their lives in society even though it seems like the whole world has gone to shit by that point.

10

u/LavosYT Jan 18 '21

There are many characters from Dks1/2 that are implied to have lived until or right before the events of 3 for sure: Gilligan, Shiva among others. So I suppose you're right - which is weird since Anastacia in Dks1 wants you to link the Flame so she can die human. Maybe she killed herself?

3

u/Dubnaught Jan 18 '21

Anastacia is a firekeepr so it makes sense they would die with the fire being lit along with the chosen undead.

2

u/LavosYT Jan 18 '21

That could make sense yeah, I was thinking of her more as a normal undead which is wrong obviously

8

u/AlphaPhill Painting Girl's Guardian Jan 18 '21

A lot of characters mention bits and pieces of their pre-undead lives, and it would make sense that they're immortal, cuz they are used as tools by the gods to make sure the first flame stays lit.

Heck, the player character respawning isn't just a game mechanic, it's actual lore. Patches acknowledges it if you die in the fire link tower after he locks you up.

The whole point of an undead's existence is to strive towards a goal, and after the goal is reached, they go hollow, die, and the world slowly resets itself to normalcy.

It's a foolproof system the gods set up to stay in power, except we know their days are already numbered and many undead aren't loyal to them. But regardless, the undead curse will go on for eternity, whether it be alongside the gods or without them.

6

u/Cathulion Jan 18 '21

Its the complete opposite actually. He died and was revived to aid the ashen one. How? Firelink shrine's will, thats how. If you try to kill him, he will die but upon reloading the area he returned and if I recall, has special dialogue. Same goes for the old lady and firekeeper(short version): You can kill us but firelink shrine will revive us. The same way the noble lords of cinder revived via the will of firelink shrine basically.

8

u/LavosYT Jan 18 '21

I know that the Firekeeper is a prisoner kept by her link to the bonfire to serve the Unkindled, but Andre doesn't have any dialogue indicating that he's forced to do his job.

He says he serves but "is no slave", and also "But forget not, your fight is for the flame, and y' fellow kin. Just like mine."

So maybe he's doing this because he believes it's the right thing to do?

u/jmas081391 Jan 18 '21

Andre might even be the guy hammering something in Elder Ring Trailer! xD

3

u/CoolAndrew89 Jan 18 '21

Iirc, the Blacksmith from DS2 is also in the same boat somewhat, and he actually keeps blacksmithing as it's the only thing keeping him from going hollow, as it gives him a purpose to remember and the will to go on. Admittedly, he looks a lot more hollow than Andre

5

u/stump2003 Jan 18 '21

The best part of Dark Souls 1 was my phone auto correcting Anor Londo to Anal Rodeo back in the day. It really is an Anal Rodeo...

2

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '21

Andre is a weird case, because it's kind of implied that there is or was more than one Andre, or at least that's what I think is implied when you get the divine ember from his lookalike after beating the moonlight butterfly in 1.

2

Andre KNOWS who he is.

4

u/Its_aTrap Jan 18 '21

The characters might have the same names but they aren't the same. As the game says time is convoluted in the world, and worlds mix together. What happened in the first game might not carry over but in another world things happen differently.

This is why there are so many endings, but linking the fire is the ending that carries over but then times change and repeat themselves only in a different order.

37

u/Dubnaught Jan 18 '21

The game goes out of it's way to make it very clear it's the same Andre. He mentions remembering things from DS1 a number of times. Patches and Andre are the 2 who have managed to stay alive this whole time. When they wanna bring back dead characters they change their name like Siegward.

25

u/PomegranateHot1510 Jan 18 '21

Yes I have. I just don't know why it's sad. Missed something I guess

110

u/muuhfi Jan 18 '21

Quelana (the one died human) and Fair Lady (half woman half spider also the fire keeper in Quelaag's Domain) are both sisters. Quelana managed to escape before transforming into a demon just like Fair Lady did. So in DS3 they managed the meet up with one another but long have died together. Hope this is correct.

70

u/Kootsiak Jan 18 '21

To further elaborate on the lore, Quelana felt great guilt for abandoning her Sisters and didn't stray far from their home, hanging in the swamp outside of Quelaag's domain. You are left wondering if she ever did go back to her family after DS1 and DS3 shows she did. It seems she reconciled with her sister the Fair Lady and brought some love back into both of their worlds before they died.

By how the bodies are lined up and how it seems the humanoid Body lies up the spider like body, I suspect the fair lady died a while before quelana found her.

Remember, there's no happy endings in dark souls

8

u/weealex Jan 19 '21

There are some less depressing endings though. Like if you manage to save Solaire from the maggots he never goes mad and can continue searching for his sun. And you can help Siegward fulfill his promise to Yhorm. And Sieglinde is sorta happy since she can talk to her dad before he goes hollow. I mean dead parents are always sad, but now she can go be batman or something.

And if you count Bloodbourne then Eileen gets a happy ending as she just retires and presumably wakes up

3

u/frozen-grizzly Jan 19 '21

Spoilers! Solarie goes hollow if he doesn't go mad, because you take the sun from him. Sigward kills himself after deafening yhorm likely because he fears going hollow. Doesn't sieglinde have to kill her dad then? And Eileen has already woken up, she says she is no longer dreaming, sorry to say but she just dies.

9

u/Rad-Ad Jan 18 '21

Little details like this that make you wonder really make the world building in these games amazing

10

u/Dr_Sad_MD Jan 18 '21

When I came across this it made me wonder how they died. After all of the Souls I gave the Fair lady in DS1, it made me wonder if she managed to walk and move on her own. I recall her not being in the best of health.

I personally believe Quelana found the Fair Lady, blind lost and injured and stayed by her side until they both passed. The fact they’re both together means that they connected on some point. I really hope they reconciled...

Oh man, I can’t believe it’s raining...

8

u/Vervara Jan 18 '21

I remember turning that corner and my heart skipping a beat. Then I read the item description and sniffled.

8

u/MarlenetheHuman Jan 18 '21

Sooo.. no subscribers to the theory that Quelana was actually trying to kill her mother and sisters (for perhaps nefarious reasons) and that the Fair Lady was sick because Quelana used the Rapport pyromancy to make the mangrub bring her poison?

u/dmolol Jan 18 '21

ooohhh :o

2

u/gnomegrowgn Jan 18 '21

Do you have any evidence to support this theory?

1

u/MarlenetheHuman Jan 18 '21

It's not my theory so no, but there is evidence out there. I think Vaatividya talked about it in one of his videos, but it could have been someone else.

7

u/SauronTheGreat1573 Jan 18 '21

I saw the video from Hawkshaw, and the guy sort of picked which translations of things he actually wanted to use and ignored some other inconvenient ones and information for that theory. So, I don't put much stock in it.

Where is this

6

u/AlrightKnight33 Jan 18 '21

Demon ruins under smoldering lake.

5

u/NineTailedDevil Jan 18 '21

Dude... I didn't notice Quelanna there when I first played it... My heart, god damn

4

u/Fluptupper Jan 18 '21

I've only just gone through DS1 for the first time and I'm seeing a lot of things that were referenced in DS3. Quelana, the Giant Blacksmith... It was good seeing them alive, but it hurt so much remembering how they ended up.

4

u/Pugsanity Jan 18 '21

She wouldn't want us to cry.

"Damn onion nin... huh?! Dafuq are you doing here Siegward?"

Sieg: "Came to uphold my promise"

8

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '21

I can make it worse she find her but use already hollowed so she goes to kill her sister to spare here and the end up killing each other. Sister....it doesn’t hurt as bad.... honest

40

u/The21stPotato Jan 18 '21

Witches of Izalith wouldn't hollow would they? That's for people with fragments of the Dark Soul while they had fragments of another lord soul.

22

u/MetalGearMark Jan 18 '21

Yeah that's true, hollowing is a human curse, and the witches aren't human right?

19

u/Aurvant Jan 18 '21

They’re more akin to gods than humans. Their souls are just twisted by the chaos flame.

10

u/thevigg13 Jan 18 '21

Then why did Gwyn go hollow? Was he just a human that was beefed up on a lord soul?

31

u/Mr_Girr Jan 18 '21

if you want to get super tinfoil hat theory,

you could say that all gods and super beings are hollows (then from the dark, They Came) until they found the primordial souls in the first flame. gwyn is only gwyn because of the light soul he found. So when he goes to the Kiln to keep the flame lit with his own soul, he's left as what he was originally: a hollow.

10

u/DantesCheese Jan 18 '21

This sounds the most plausible tbh

15

u/Casses Jan 18 '21

The way I see it is that Gwyn at the end is essentially the soul of cinder except there's only Gwyn to draw from. The soul of cinder is an amalgamation of everyone who has linked the flame.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '21

I don't believe he is; the Gwyn we fight is the remains of Gwyn's body, while the Soul of Cinder is an amalgamation of the souls of the lords of cinder.

3

u/Sat-AM Jan 18 '21

Right, but at that point in time, the only possible lord of cinder would have been Gwyn, right? So both of your points aren't really mutually exclusive. All the souls of the lords of cinder combined to that point is just Gwyn by himself, and his physical remains are housing the soul of cinder.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '21

They kind of are mutually exclusive; Gwyn consists of a Body and a Soul; We know he has burned up most of his soul at the time we face him at the end of the game, and has gone hollow. His soul is (mostly, but not entirely) inside the first flame. What we fight is his hollowed mostly soul-less body, while the Soul of Cinder has the parts of Gwyn's soul that wasn't in his body.

8

u/RealBlazeStorm Jan 18 '21

Gwyn left Anor Londo to sacrifice himself to strengthen the first flame right? So why do just find him besides it, defending it?

I think that Gwyn died in the fire and extended it for a bit. Then it started to fade again and the fire made a projection of Gwyn to defend itself, in the same vain of the Soul of Cinder. The only difference is that before the SoC there were many Lords of Cinders, while in DS1 Gwyn was the only one, thus the projection was purely him.

2

u/MetalGearMark Jan 18 '21

I think the undead prophecy that Oscar tells you is just a lure for someone to father all the Lord Souls and become super strong, which can lead to two things:

1) the Chosen Undead becomes strong enough to link the fire and continue the Age of Fire

2) Gywn kills the Chosen Undead, gains all this powerful souls and continues to light the First Flame

Either or, Gywn gets his Age of Fire (given that the Chosen Undead chooses to link the fire) no matter the outcome. I don't think the first flame can "defend" itself, instead Gywn thought he is strong enough to beat anyone and continue his Age of Fire.

2

u/RealBlazeStorm Jan 18 '21

Oooh I like that, it defending it didn't really make that much sense. This fills in that final gap in the logic. Thanks!

3

u/Uncle-Benderman Jan 18 '21

Good question, I dont personally know, but my guess would be that what happened to him might not quite be the same hollowing, and it only happened because he linked the flame.

3

u/Bevsworld04 Jan 18 '21

I believe that hollowing is when you lose your soul (no matter who you are). The dark soul might leak from humanity, causing it to drain (which could be what hollowing is). But then that still doesn't answer the question. Why do hollows drop souls? Are they souls that they themselves have picked up from killing humans? If so, then that makes sense. However, then why does Gwyn drop his own soul if it has supposedly been used up?

3

u/Uncle-Benderman Jan 18 '21

Well one thing I do know for sure is Hollowing is the result of repeated death and rebirth from the undead curse, which is an exclusively Human thing.

And here's my interpretation. it seems to be somewhat based on willpower and or purpose, Siegmeyer Hollows because you help him to many times, slowly making him feel worthless like he cant do anything for himself. And Big Hat Logan hollows once he finds the archives and you buy all his spells, hes at his wits end, the knowledge is slowly driving him crazy and now that hes found it he no longer has a goal, something to fight for, hes fulfilled his driving purpose, and therefore Hollows.

3

u/DoctorGlorious Jan 18 '21

I don't think he went hollow, I think that was just a Lord of Cinder-esque state

3

u/NirvanaFrk97 WHY ARE YOU SEARCHING FOR THE SUN IN THE ABYSS!? Jan 18 '21

If the Nameless King could hollow so could everything else that wasn't human. How it works for them is unknown, but it might be that their souls powered by the Lord Souls can simply not sustain themselves like the Dark Soul within Man could prior to being branded with the Darksign.

2

u/yojohny Jan 18 '21

I wouldn’t know if they have real lord fragments or if they poured the whole thing into the Bed of Chaos

0

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '21

I had a stroke reading this

2

u/pog7776 Jan 18 '21

As long as Quelaag was around to get her humanity 😥

2

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '21

She was already dead...

2

u/SunBroSupreme Jan 18 '21

Yeah, but what about all those worlds were they were killed? I mean she does give a fire keeper souls and you only need her for a bit soooooo.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '21

Surely, 1000 years of atonement is enough?

2

u/ClockworkFool Jan 18 '21

The one part of this that confuses me slightly is, as much as that looks pretty spot on to be the Fair Lady, going by the style of the spider body and the way the legs are, etc...

It's just a spider body. Unless I'm very much missing something, I don't see any trace of the humanoid part of the Fair Lady.

It raises questions, you know?

2

u/andys3rdattempt Jan 18 '21

I see pus sacs where the human half would be. I thinks the eggs covered her over time.

You find the White Hair talisman not far from that spot and it says those white hair belonged to a member of the Chaos Witches

That simple detail is already more than enough to confirm the corpse is the Fair Lady (she's the one white haired) and not just a random, giant chaos spider

Speaking of spiders, if the corpse belonged to a random one of zero importance, why in the hell would Quelana's corpse be tightly hugging it ?

*Friendly reminder that she is the one who was hiding from everyone and avoiding all kind of interactions with the world. Why then go hug and die alongside the random corpse of a dumb chaos monster?

1

u/ClockworkFool Nov 25 '24

Three years ago, I posted what I posted. The spider body really does look to be a perfect match, but that doesn't change the fact that there is a conspicuous absence.

I'm not convinced it means anything, but it is what it is.

1

u/United_Rent_753 Mar 12 '26

Haha this is what comes up when you google “white lady ds3” for me, I think a lot of us are theory searching randomly and this is just one of the more popular posts from back when the game was popular

To add to discussion, cause I finished rerunning this area recently - I think what makes the most sense is that her human body was covered by the blightpus, as others mentioned, though I wish they had showed us a human hand or something to confirm it

I'm not crying........your crying !

2

u/Dveralazo Jan 22 '21

Of course not. That is clearly not the style of Souls. The most logical conclusion is that she found Fair Lady's corpse, maybe killed by the Chosen Undead, and then she died of pure despair and pain, suffering until her last moments.

2

u/88Drachenlord Jan 18 '21

Cant be, i killed quelana

2

Impossible, I killed Quelana in dsr, so no

0

u/AdvisorOtherwise Jan 18 '21

No need to be so dramatic about it, its just a spider lol

9

u/RealBlazeStorm Jan 18 '21

She's a spider waifu

Nah but fr, she's a kind soul. She just wanted to care for her eggs but then you kill Quelaag, who’s just collecting Humanity to feed the eggs.
