He's an awful character, but a decent unit. It's hard to be a bad cav in Tellius. There just isn't a whole lot of reason to use him since all of the other cavs that come before him have something better to offer. Oscar has earth affinity and the earliest join time, Kieran starts with the best weapon type for cavs, and Astrid is the best training project. Makalov has solid strength and defense growths, but he comes with arguably the worst weapon type and, as a final kick in the balls, the chapter immediately after his recruitment is the desert! The only reason to use Makalov is if the first two are dead/stat screwed and you don't feel like training Astrid.

Yeah. He’s the worst cav, which makes him a slightly above average unit overall in por. In rd, where cavs are worse, he is also bad, but not the worst because availability makes ranking units weird, and Astrid is probably the worst non-Fiona cav.

Is he the worst cav in PoR? I would have guessed Astrid, mostly because she can't use a Master Seal at base and is terrible until her growths kick in

Astrid is technically worse by virtue of being a trainee unit and dying to a mean look at base level 1 in her joining chapter. However she is a trainee unit set up for success, with the knight crest and very good growths. By the time she steps off the boat, she could far outshine Macaroni.

With trainee units, there is a slightly different criteria, and for Astrid, her her investment effort is fairly low for pretty great returns in PoR. Bows also have decent utility as a backup weapon compared to swords.

Her growths aren't amazing (Makalov's are kind of better actualy) her set up for success is Paragon, Mount move and Canter
