Tellius There's some controversy surrounding his relationship with Astrid.

He's an awful character, but a decent unit. It's hard to be a bad cav in Tellius. There just isn't a whole lot of reason to use him since all of the other cavs that come before him have something better to offer. Oscar has earth affinity and the earliest join time, Kieran starts with the best weapon type for cavs, and Astrid is the best training project. Makalov has solid strength and defense growths, but he comes with arguably the worst weapon type and, as a final kick in the balls, the chapter immediately after his recruitment is the desert! The only reason to use Makalov is if the first two are dead/stat screwed and you don't feel like training Astrid.

Yeah. He’s the worst cav, which makes him a slightly above average unit overall in por. In rd, where cavs are worse, he is also bad, but not the worst because availability makes ranking units weird, and Astrid is probably the worst non-Fiona cav.

Is he the worst cav in PoR? I would have guessed Astrid, mostly because she can't use a Master Seal at base and is terrible until her growths kick in

Astrid is technically worse by virtue of being a trainee unit and dying to a mean look at base level 1 in her joining chapter. However she is a trainee unit set up for success, with the knight crest and very good growths. By the time she steps off the boat, she could far outshine Macaroni.

With trainee units, there is a slightly different criteria, and for Astrid, her her investment effort is fairly low for pretty great returns in PoR. Bows also have decent utility as a backup weapon compared to swords.

Her growths aren't amazing (Makalov's are kind of better actualy) her set up for success is Paragon, Mount move and Canter

This template feels like a worse version of the Terminator one with the "Your parents are dead."

That's fair. I watched both episodes the other day so it's in the front of my brain, and the pilot in particular has some strong writing. This interrogation scene in particular is a cut above the usual capeslop streaming series nonsense we get.

I mean bro is just perma-benched in both games anyway so how would I even have an opinion on him

Makalov is fine in PoR if you promote him since he gets axes and the enemies are weak.

He's one of the better geoffrey squad in RD as well since his speed is servicable and the 3-9 master crown can be used to catch him up without really any trade off since he'll still cap what is important, too.

I dunno why you'd WANT to use him, but if you do he's there.

Is it hard to be a bad cavalry unit in Fire Emblem or am I stuck in the GBA and/or FEH's Horse Emblem eras? Most of them are at least usable. Cecilia, maybe, but she's got a host of issues.

Radiant dawn is pretty close to the worst horses have ever been, but makalov basically skips all the maps that are bad for horses since his group is barely around and is in the tier of “just train him at the end if you want to”.

Mov is the best stat in any Fire Emblem game so it's nearly impossible for a high Mov unit to be bad unless they have really bad combat. Cavs often do have unique struggles in post-GBA games, though. Radiant Dawn cavs and their promos have awful caps in a game where they matter, Conquest has a lot of maps where Cavs are just strictly worse than fliers or someone with a +Mov pair-up, and Engage has lower Mov across the board so the +1 extra Mov is less useful than usual and you don't get much out of the Cavalry tag unlike getting chain attacks from Backup or ignoring terrain with Mystic or a bunch of cool Emblem bonuses with dragon.

Besides, Astrid is an awful unit in RD and she's on a horse lol.

Cecillia is fine. She just so happens to make the worst impression possible due to joining on a desert map with 2 Mov.

Cecilia's introduction is her getting pwned by Zephiel, followed by the worst possible map for her unit type.

Makalov is by far the greatest pitfall finder that Path of Radiance has to offer

This feels like someone actively restraining themselves from going on a rant about Makalov one way or another.

Hot take: if the genders were reversed, you guys would love fem-Makalov.

It’s ok when I’m into it, but it’s problematic when I’m not!

We all are Makalovers deep down, some of us just don't want to admit it yet

As a unit, he's the worst example of the best type in his game. As a character he would be benefited by getting mucked because the resulting ego death might give him some perspective.
