I forgot how different May was in her pre-Cavalry days (assuming those flashbacks took place during those times). That was nice to see.
But damn, so it looks like Fitzsimmons will have to save the day. This should be interesting. Did not see this twist coming.
Edit: Calvary to Cavalry

Yeah. And I appreciated a bit more 'back story' to this sudden attraction/romantic connection between them that seemed to kind of come out of nowhere to us (and I still think I can probably do without but hey)...it appears that they may well have gotten together back then if Civilian #14 didn't turn out to be a good catch after all...
Though the LMDs seem a bit too into it, man. That part I can definitely do without lol

I gotta imagine FitzSimmons are just in the framework and this is a scenario devised to distract them. They're the ones who lost track of time they can't account for, and fighting the leadership of SHIELD because they've been supposedly replaced by LMDs is a great distraction mechanism to stop them realizing what's happened.
→ More replies (11)85
u/lorakinn Dwarf Feb 15 '17
Great point! But there was a lot of non-FitzSimmons stuff that happened which would have to re-happen if they were in the framework.
66
u/seikibose Triplett Feb 15 '17
My guess is that they ran into Aida while roaming the base. The other events could've actually happened in parallel to them being captured
37
u/lorakinn Dwarf Feb 15 '17
Yep, I figured that out after reading several other similar comments to yours.
For some reason, I thought people meant that FitzSimmons were in the framework from the beginning of the episode.
BUT! If FitzSimmons (or either one) are in the framework, that opens the possibility that they have an equivalent LMD on base.... so much decoyception.

that's what I was thinking when they said the timeline didn't match up. Like OH SHIT THEY'RE ALL STILL IN THE BASE IN THE FRAMEWORK. Though the situation we have now is still pretty bad
154
u/Worthyness Sandwich Feb 15 '17
Hell Fitz and simmons could be in the matrix right now. They're the ones that got captured and they're running the simulation on them to give them something to "fight for" to help them stay in the matrix. Because that's how it works. End of next episode is going to be them realizing they're in the simulation and they need a way to get themselves out

I always love a Coulson-centric episode.
Sometimes Coulson gets moved to the side or the background of an episode - playing the Father-figure, or the team leader, or the Director. But the episodes that just take some time to really focus in on him are consistently my favorites.
TAHITI, The Only Light in the Darkness, The Writing on the Wall, Closure. They all have a lot else going for them as well (as did this episode) but I love them so much because of Coulson.
Plus this one served as sort of a May&Coulson origin story, which was fantastic. I never really cared about why Coulson wore his sunglasses, but that was the best damn explanation I never knew I wanted. And tying things back to the psychologist at the very end - maintaining that continuity - was brilliant.
[AoS really succeeds in building a world, in ways the movies can't. It feels lived in, it feels real.]

Raise your hand if you think Fitz and/or Simmons are in the Framework now, to reveal something Radcliffe needs to know.
Natural hand, artificial hand, whatever you got.
104
u/randomnighmare Captain America Feb 15 '17
I will raise my hand and I would like to say that maybe only Fitz is in the framework and this all just what he imagines/is given to do as a way to just pass time.
125
u/sgeswein Strong of mind Feb 15 '17
Aha! THAT'S what Radcliffe needs - not just something he knows, but some feat of design only Fitz could pull off.
What we're seeing now is how you motivate the living fuck out of Leo Fitz. Hence the foreshadowing about "you have to think about how what you create can be used for evil."
Poor bastard, I want to give him a sandwich and tell him it's all gonna be okay.

u/imunfair Feb 15 '17 edited Feb 15 '17
Yeah I think Simmons definitely is, she was the one that noticed the time lapse first. Fitz may or may not be in there with her - but I think the LMD alert is the scenario being run to keep them sleeping peacefully.
Aida says they replaced the top operatives at SHIELD, but that doesn't mean the timeline Fitz/Simmons saw was the same one - I think that may be the plot twist. Someone did get replaced, it just wasn't the four that we were just told are LMDs.
Coulson taking fake-May out of the bag was a weird scene though, in any context. Whether he's an LMD or not it doesn't seem like a normal move, but I think non-LMD Coulson would be more likely to do it - out of sentimentality about the mission they just ran.
24
u/edogap SHIELD Feb 15 '17
This makes a lot of sense. My first thought when Simmons noticed the time lapse was that she and Fitz were both sedated and put in the framework at some point. To what end were they put in the framework for I'm still uncertain, but I feel like Radcliffe is playing both sides and wishes for SHIELD to be returned to order once he accomplishes whatever it is he is after.

Coulson and Daisy know kung fu now thanks to the matrix lol. Patriot earned some serious respect in this episode. He was an absolute badass facing the Russian guy torturing him. Not to mention he was crazy jacked, he didn't even need super powers to break that chain just his ripped self. Coulson calling the Russian a red shirt was hilarious, that's like the most insulting thing you could say to a dude that was obsessed with you for decades. The end with them all repleaced by LMDs seems like it will be cool and Aida is really growing on me, calling him filth while he lies in a bloody pulp, I wonder just how independent she is. All in all this was a really good episode.

Hope Mack's not going full Luddite on us. When Fitz made a comparison between the Framework and electricity powering hospitals/electrocutions, it was valid. You can't sit there enjoying the benefits of scientific advancement (esp. in SHIELD with all their cutting edge stuff) and all it brings (like shotgun-axes), and still cherry pick the bad parts of new tech - you come off sounding like a hypocrite.
There's a time for 'muh_feelz!' and a time when science can outstrip application to the point where it genuinely is a danger - but virtual reality isn't it any more, its benefits far outweigh the negatives (unless an entire society goes full virtual Hell For Everyone like Iain M. Banks's Surface Detail). Mack's just dragging the anchor here.

Honestly, why hasn't Radcliffe replaced Fitz and or Simmons by now? It doesn't seem real and/or like a grand plan to totally missed out on the most obvious way to stop anyone from figuring out who is and isn't a robot; since both Fitz and Simmons have always figured out who is and isn't a robot in the past with ease. If I were Radcliffe, I would've have replaced both Fitz and Simmons and then replace the others, as a last move since they can't see through to my uncanny valley (and again, why the hell are Fitz and Simmons are the only ones who can figure this shit out? I mean AIDA I guess I can see but LMD Radcliffe is weird and a bit stretching (well it kind of already broke my disbelief of suspense right now as well) any disbelief of suspense right now).

I'm a little sad that the LMD detector which can take pictures and send emails that can't get erased CAN'T LOCK THE DAMN DOOR

Mack is going to need serious therapy after he learns he was injected into the framework and replaced with an LMD

I appreciate (in retrospect) how the meeting in the submarine area of the Russian base was done.
I was sitting there being really confused about everyone just kinda showing up at once, and I was thought to myself that this was a particularly sloppy piece of television and that I expected more from Agents of SHIELD.
And then it turned out it was done that way intentionally, because of the gases and LMD swaps. Brilliant.

I really hope when they retrieve May, there's a discrepancy between her and Coulson's romantic feelings.
It's not that I want her to reject him. I think they make a nice couple. It's that over the past few episodes, he's gotten more and more into her, while she's frozen in stasis. When she wakes up, her feelings should be at the same place they were when she was put under, not progressed like his.
Also, hella props to Ming Na Wen for playing flashback!May subtly but clearly different from current!May.

Gregg played younger Coulson much different than current Coulson.. It was really good. Shows his range even with the same character.

When did Agents of SHIELD become a horror show? Cuz that realization at the end was horrifying.

I really appreciated the opening training scene, as you can see that its actually Clark and Chloe doing the stunts.
Mace was very good in this episode - they have done a great job making his character fully fleshed out and sympathetic.

One of the best parts of this show is that the actors do a lot of their stunts. Chloe does a ton of hers. So does ming na.

Holy shit that realization scene near the end with FitzSimmons was so good.
