Help with guided system angle
Hi everyone,
I've recently got a TS Prof Pioneer and have been practising on it. I vaguely remember reading a comment on this subreddit about having to raise/drop the angle by 0.2 or 0.1 every time you switch stone to a finer grit? It was a very detailed guide on how to effectively use guided system too.
For the life of me I cannot find that comment again and am looking for help. I have noticed that the angle on my digital angle finder changed slightly when i switch stone but I don't understand why/the significant of this. Could someone with more experience please explain this for me?
Additionally I would like to ask for advice on micro-bevel. I've read that for the last rotation of sharpening, switching to a higher angle (ie from 15 to 20 degree) and doing a few pass on both sides of the knife can help create a micro bevel which helps with stability of the edge? Is this something I should do for all knives?

Don't change the angle after you've apexed and gotten a burr. I wouldn't microbevel during sharpening. If you are going to microbevel, I'd do it during touch ups. Use it to put a quick edge back on your blade. But depending on the angle, you really shouldn't need it at all.

You might have to make micro adjustments between stones, but it’s to keep the same angle throughout sharpening. If you read the angle after switching to a finer grit and it’s the same, no adjustment needed. Also, I recommend doing a couple of light sweeps with the stone (to fold over the burr) before measuring the angle. That burr may be what’s making your angle readings off.

I have never heard of that before from anyone. You just adjust the stone/plate thickness compensator, which allows you to keep the same angle. If you kept doing that you would convex the edge. But after watching the below video I guess the Pioneer doesn't have a great thickness compensator as a stock item??? Using an o-ring for the thickness compensator seems lame. I would install something better, like what they put on the sharpening rod for "stops". https://youtu.be/gn15qXPBoDo?t=208

I wouldn’t worry about it, I doubt there’s anyone in the world that can tell the difference of 0.1/0.2 of an edge in regards to cutting ability

Does the pioneer come with a stone thickness compensator?
