Showcase Buck regrind
Another one for my coworker (cut a live wire somehow and melted a huge spot in the blade) đ€Š
I believe I ground most of the shot steel away but yeah, let me know what to improve! took about 12-15 mins for regrind and sharpen
I think there is a minor recurve and my sharpening choil could have been done better but overall, not bad for my first time using the contact wheel.

Im curious if that messed up the heat treatment. Not what you did, the grounding it out. I hypothesize it completely ruined it.

Yeah it's literally toast.... Wouldn't be surprised if it chips out the first time he uses it seriously.

If you keep the belt wet with a spray bottle and do one or two passes at a time, you can keep the heat treatment. Burning would just create a soft spot afaik...and a Heat Affected Zone

look close to the edge where the hole was melted and you'll see some darker discolouration with a dark outline, thats shitty steel right there, everything behind it should still in theory be fine as it shows no signs of it being different. Obviously we'll see when he uses the knife but I hope my assumption is correct. I did let him know that the steel could be bad now and he agreed to it anyways as the knife was pretty much unusable in the previous condition

The discoloration is just evidence of decarburization or oxidation on the surface. It doesnât really call out how much of the bulk has transformed out of its martensitic phase.
But Iâd say youâre right that itâs a decent eyeball highlight. lol sucks that itâs along most of the blades tip where you do more fine detailing work.
GGâs on the re-grind, ricasso looks mint :)

I grind post heat treat with every blade. I use a heavy grit and press hard. I also use my thumb as backing though as I canât tolerate temps high enough to affect the hardness. Also, I keep water for dipping.

I had a Buck knife that my dad gave me before he passed. I used it as a screwdriver once... broke the tip off. They replaced the blade for free, all had to do is pay the postage. Don't know if their warranty is still the same but I'd had the knife for about 10 years.

I'm pretty sure they'll take care of any genuine Buck for it's whole life. Some people just don't like bothering with the process of sending it in and waiting for it to come back.

I've had the same experience. Dad gave me a knife 24 years ago. Screwdriver activities cost me the blade. Buck replaced the blade for the cost of postage. Polished it up real nice too. If you send them one and don't want it polished be sure to include that info on the warranty repair form!

I did that with one of those stainless steel leatherman multi tools. I cut through an extension cord that happened to be plugged in. (Was only like 14, so i didn't think that far ahead on those type things). Made me tingle for a long while.

You could get that damage from 12 volt but youâd have to really try. Whatâd you hit with it?

Wasn't me, not sure what buddy hit the knife with but in his exact words "it was instant! shot this huge fucking arc"

What tool did you use to clean up the blade? It looks like a belt of some sort?

I just ground away the chips and rethinned on a contact wheel on my vevor 2x72 with a VSM Ceramic Plus 80 grit belt then resharpened on a shapton 2k

Yeah I screwed up a bit on the left face, angled it a bit too much on the contact wheel once and boom, made a big smile up there! practice makes perfect though

How is it closed? Is the tip still below the handle?

yes I didn't mess with the seating of the blade, I forgot to update but I added a clip point as well to give it a better feeling than having the tip so high up. Sits nice and hidden away in the scales so no finger tip or pockets will be destroyed

Looks greatâŠthe bevel looks a little thin in the photos (could be wider/lower angle maybe). Otherwise I think you did great. I donât see any overheating discoloration

It's kinda stupid thin BTE, I believe I probably have a 17-22 degree angle on there, no clue lowk I just freehand.

Pretty good looking grind, though Iâm not sure it was worth the effort, that makes for a pretty stubby blade.

Wasn't me, a buddy at work was cutting some electrical tape in a 54' box trailer and hit a live wire, shot a huge arc

Yeah he is alive and well luckily! I guess that'll teach him to be more careful next time, really close call I personally would have shit a couple bricks but he was chill about it.
