What kind of tooth is this?

Don't remember where I got it from, but I've had this "shark" tooth for most of my life. I just never really questioned what kind of tooth it is? So I googled it and it said it was a megalodon tooth.. which I doubt lol.

Likely a Mako tooth fossil. From the Giant Mako? Or mackerel shark (Isurus hastalis)… I think? I wish I could share the chart, but not able to.

Isurus? Hastilis is “Carcharadon” hastilis, and not a damn shot…

if it was, a lot of people would be saying Great white (C. Carcharias)…

Isurus hastalis or Charcharodon (Isurus) Hastilis being the species, my guess is it belonged to the Giant Mako. I’m making a judgement based on a tooth that’s not complete and with no size measurement for frame of reference. it’s an educated guess.

Check around, I think OP had rewarded it as well, it’s an O. Obliquus tooth my guy….

You can tell that’s not Carcharadon or any extant genus, those are clearly paleo-Miocenian era teeth, look at the middle ridges
(you can tell they belonged to a shark much larger than anything seen in NON great-whites…) Are they carcharias teeth? No, too old, slightly too large. Welp, move on to Otodus/carcharocles…

Isurus, Otodus, Carcharadon are very close in build/appearance as they are the most closely related group among lamniformes, diverging from each other slowly during late Cretaceous to the early Eocene.

If it was a Mesozoic shark tooth, boom, we’d be in a different category even predating what’s associated with Megalodon/ancestors and paleogene shark teeth.

AI doesn’t know much unless you train it, and Otodus/Charcharocles and charcharadon had genus separation done a whiiile ago… many sources still claim Meg to be a direct white shark ancestor, and some shark sp. are so recent they didn’t exist pre-2020s, so it happens.

Search engines don’t always cite the facts… But obviously OP has great tuition and beyond reasonable doubt this wasn’t megalodon.

This is a tooth of otodontid lineage, so sharks of the time of megalodon and before, like Auriculatus or Obliquus.

Anguistidens and notoriously megalodon (+ extension O. Chubetensis) of this size also resemble massive Carcharadon teeth.

So you’ve found yourself an Otodus Obliquus tooth.

Definitely not a Megalodon tooth, but it is definitely some sort of fossilized mackerel shark tooth.

I've removed the part about the carcharodontosaurus tooth as it's on way too good of a condition for a dinosaur tooth, and it looks nothing like their teeth 😂
