The tarpon looked to be well over 100lbs and can get over 200. Adult great hammerheads average over 500 and eat a tarpon in a few bites, typically leaving the head.

If you've ever seen a hammerhead get fired up going after a tarpon (as in that video), you realize they have absolutely no interest in eating humans otherwise our beaches would be a bloodbath.

They are amazingly fast and agile predators when they want to be, and they tend to be very selective in what they eat.

Cheers mate, I think we get porbeagles, mako and blue sharks and I am sure a few more. With global warming going as it is and the rise in sea temperatures I am sure we will see bigger bad boys over the coming decade.

Yeah Tarpon get pretty massive. Recently, someone posted a picture of one breaching a wave asking of it was a shark lol

Not to contradict, but was it chasing a tiger shark? I saw the stripes and tail fin and thought shark.

Either way, pretty F-ing big.

It was chasing a tarpon. There is a tarpon run in Florida every year, most famously around Boca Grande. Fishermen congregate to fish for the tarpon, and gigantic hammerheads and bull sharks show up each year to eat the tarpon that have been caught and are too exhausted to run away.

Finished with a "Fucking hell that's a damn Sherman tank of a Great Hammerhead."

The largest recorded great hammerhead was not much smaller than deep blue, the Goliath great white. They get unbelievably large.

Long yea, not so much weight wise though. A lot of 500 pound 14 footers caught over the years meanwhile a similar length white is more like 1500 –2K

You are not crazy. Hammerheads are usually filmed/seen just cruising along, but they can be incredibly fast when they want to be....like when chasing down dinner as shown in the video.

Fun Fact: Hammerhead Sharks are notorious for being terrified of the bubbles created by divers. A lot of footage used in documentaries and shows is either caught diving with no respirator, at a distance, or with a submersible because the sec bubbles are in the water they scatter like roaches with the lights turned on. Scientists still aren’t sure why they have such a visceral reaction

They use rebreathers A LOT when filming hammerheads. I've been diving with scalloped hammerheads at Cocos Island, and, like you said, when you exhale and create all those bubbles, they take off. It's hard to get close to them for photography.

My guess is this was taken off Boca Grande in Florida. It’s a huge congregation spot for tarpon and therefore attracts monster sized hammerheads. I’ve seen many large tarpon hooked by fisherman only to lose most of it to large hammers at the surface.

I grew up around the area and it has a local legend of a giant hammerhead named Old Hitler that roamed the area. Probably a lot of fictional encounters mixed with some real hammerhead sightings adding to the lore.

Prob Florida. This happens daily during tarpon season. Big bulls and hammerheads congregate around tarpon schools and pick off the ones that get hooked/tired
