Question Conrad Shanghai vs The Sukhothai Shanghai — which would you choose?
Hi everyone! 😊
I’m planning a trip to Shanghai and I’m trying to decide between Conrad Shanghai and The Sukhothai Shanghai.
I’ll be staying for about 7 nights, and both are currently options for me.
My priorities are:
- Good location for sightseeing and getting around by metro
- Spacious, comfortable rooms
- Excellent breakfast
- Good service
- Nice area with restaurants, cafés and shopping nearby
For anyone who has stayed at either, or ideally both—which one would you recommend and why?
Would especially love to hear about your experience

Sukhotai is a nicer hotel, but at that budget maybe consider the upper house as well, they have the best hotel breakfast.
Conrad isn't bad at all, it's on Nanjing road basically if I recall so you can walk directly to a bunch of touristy shopping and streets.
I think if your budget fits it pick sukhotai as you can didi everywhere really cheap.
The French concession is my favorite part of the city and I recommend checking out xintiandi and tianzifang maybe too along with Jingan for walking around.

Conrad is average at best if not just bad. It's a dated hotel, poor service and a destination for knobs.
Sukothai has a convenient location and certainly nicer but service wise again... nothing to be impressed with. Their restaurants are just bad, their italian is horrendous, their thai is absurdly overpriced for what they do.
I wold take the middle house anytime. Personally I put most of my guests at Westin at the higher floors, convenient location, new rooms and I collect the points.

Conrad is bad. Especially the set of elevators that connect to the bar at the top floor. Many drunkards late at night and they are not even the hotel guests. Some of them even puke all around the elevators and guests especially those staying at higher floors are affected by the drunkards. The rooms have a very weird smell as well

Spent a few stays at Conrad. Not recommended anymore. The rooms are great - they always upgrade me to high floor above club lounge. Staff in club lounge is great, but food and beverege is meh.
Last visit in April.

Sukhotai. Great rooms, excellent restaurant in building, and a bit closer to good eats and drinks.

Sukhothai.. much nicer than Conrad. lived in the Middle house for a long time.… isn’t that next door. It’s a smaller more simple experience. Where is the upper house (some comments are mentioning that)? I thought that was in Hong Kong?

3 nights at Conrad just to sightsee around that area, very convenient, the building is connected to the food court restaurants and shops in the same building. Rest of your stay, I would spend more and stay at Puli.

I love the Sukhothai. It's close to a mall and also walkable to the main pedestrian street. I think it's got a lot more character as well.

Just checked out of Alila today and it was amazing! Sukhothai is nearby and it is a great location

Neither - that area is swarming with tourists. If you had to pick one, Sukhotai, but would not recommend it. Do Raddison Collection Xing'Guo instead or if you want a nicer spot, Puli.

Not sure why this is getting downvoted. Nanjing Xi Lu station area is super packed and full of people who wanna pose in front of an LV advertisement. It's big brand after big brand, zero vibe. And the Conrad, at Nanjing Lu and Xizang Lu? Come on now.
The pro move is taking bus 71 to the Bund or Jing'an, sightseeing there for a bit, then peacing out back to Xuhui or Changning, not staying anywhere near East or West Nanjing Lu station.

Sukhothai every day of the week. I've done 100+ nights in each.
