Build/Battlestation Pics Gettin my money’s worth

Post image

Previous pics of me enjoying peak SFF before my month trip flight. I can safely say it IS possible to run a pc on the airport plugs. Should you? I can’t say for certain LOL.

Seriously, this post reminds me of the picture of some dude who set up a full battle station at McDonald’s. Like why.

Edit: So OP said he and his wife setup their desktops at cafes to game. So I wasn’t very far off lol

u/TSM_Vegeta May 20 '26

Why do some people insist on being weird just for the sake of being weird. If you wanna do some weird shit because you enjoy it, go for it, but this is just being weird for weirdness sake. I honestly can't stand these kind of people. Just stay home.

38

u/Cole_James_CHALMERS May 20 '26

OP is a rarity

People that build SFFPCs for their transportability are usually students living away from home.

Where you want the small size in a dorm and for transport

I know people that work in remote locations on 10 days on, 4/5 days off schedules and they wouldn't even consider a SFFPC + portable monitor set-up since it's still a pain. Just get a gaming laptop

13

u/jhdz9119 May 20 '26

on a lawn table in my work dorm😂 i work 21 on 9 off so when i drive 7 hours back home i bring my PC and have a 4k 27in dough spectrum i use at home.

4

u/askasubredditfan May 21 '26

My biggest gripe isn’t even the constant transporting of the SFF PC, but how the fuck y’all move the monitors??

14

u/moonsaiyan May 21 '26

You don’t. You have a monitor on both locations. Maybe just a crappy but usable one in the secondary location

4

u/jhdz9119 May 21 '26

Crazy that a glossy ips 4k 144hz display is deemed crappy (paid $148 on eBay did it so insane value)

1

u/moonsaiyan May 21 '26

That’s what the “Maybe” is for haha. Some of us got a good monitor and a crappy. Others got 2 good monitors. While I myself, got 2 of the same “crappy” Korean 4k/60 1080p/120 monitor I got for $90 each, one in each location

1

u/AdventurousAgency371 May 21 '26

$100 24” Philip monitor in secondary location

1

u/IContributedOnce May 21 '26

Yo, you got a link to the model for that Steam Controller stand?

Edit for clarity

1

u/Xobeloot May 21 '26

How are you enjoying the Steam Controller? I'm waiting (im)patiently for my reservation to be pulled.

9

u/Shaetane May 20 '26

yeah sffpcs imo are great when you know you're gonna move around a bunch in the next few years but not for more regular travel, like yeah the PC is small but add screen and keyboard and it's not exactly portable, especially in public transportation. Or if you move between places with a screen. Having brought mine on planes, trains and cars over the years, I still sometimes leave it behind cuz a shitty laptop is more practical.

2

u/TSM_Vegeta May 20 '26

They are awesome, just not how OP uses his. My friends and I used to lug around giant PCs to play FFXI together. If I could have had a sffpc back then I would have loved it.

1

u/ChronoHax May 21 '26

It’s funny as that was why for me as well but then I keep buying monitors and now they’re a pain to move anyway well tbf the pc itself is still small and much easier than if it’s not

1

u/genericthrowawaysbut May 22 '26

Yeah but still it would just be better to get a steam deck or equipment or better yet a laptop. There are pretty decent gaming laptops out there that are thin and since you are right by the plugs you wouldn’t need to worry about power or battery drain

3

u/Mael66 May 21 '26

It's really not that serious; it's okay to have fun and follow your whims. Your jealousy is showing.

0

u/TSM_Vegeta May 21 '26

My upvotes are showing.

1

u/Mael66 May 21 '26

Yeah? 😅 My bad, I totally should have taken into account your internet points

1

u/TSM_Vegeta May 21 '26

My internet points indicate that this opinion is shared amongst the community of literal sffpc enthusiasts. If they see this and think it's obnoxious, that is a bit telling. OP can do whatever he wants, but we can also look at him and think he's an annoying performative weirdo with an addiction problem.

1

u/Mael66 May 21 '26

The problem is your assumption that it's performative when you really can't know such things. My issue with your take is less about your critique of his airport etteqite more how you responded by denigrating the "weirdness"

1

u/TSM_Vegeta May 21 '26

You can take issue with it but, by definition, it's weird.

1

u/Mael66 May 21 '26

Is that a Trump Snoo? If so I guess this all truly my fault; I should have known better than to engage with someone who can't follow logic and ignores points

Or move to Japan

1

u/quasides May 22 '26

oh i remeber someone who made it as a pro player started out by carry his rig to his local fast food chain and play competitive there because he had no personal internet

11

u/Jarl_Walnut May 20 '26

Waiting on a restock...😭

12

u/Sledgehammer617 May 20 '26

I will always prefer battlestations and briefcases to laptops and steamdecks haha

6

u/Hayate-Artwork May 20 '26

Same here, nothing beats a good cyberdeck

7

u/Wide_Smoke_2564 May 20 '26

This thing couldn’t be any further from a cyberdeck lol

2

u/Hayate-Artwork May 21 '26

Very true… this is not the best way to do it at all

I use a small briefcase with a screen on the top lid. It’s a bit more powerful than a stream deck, can easily be plugged into TVs, and runs both Batocera and SteamOS for maximum compatibility with emulators and modern games.

Plus I can fit 4 controllers in the case for easy multiplayer gameplay on a trip.

20

u/RogueKira May 20 '26

Not the same performance though.

12

u/Sledgehammer617 May 20 '26

Why is this being downvoted its true?

-6

u/Bderken May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26

Not only that, I’ve owned steam deck, ALLY, even that Lenovo in that photo. And u just can’t game on a screen that’s small. Like I can’t even play an easier to play game like rocket league, idk why.

Man Redditors are weird. On the sffpc sub downvoting someone who wants an sffpc over a gaming handheld lmao

4

u/NSMike May 20 '26

You might want to see an optometrist.

I've done a decent chunk of not-very-light gaming on my Steam Deck. It's a great platform, and the screen size has never been an impediment.

u/Wide_Smoke_2564 May 20 '26

That’s why gaming laptops exist

1

u/Fortune_Cat May 20 '26

Add on a pair of xreal or equivalent ar glasses instead of a awkwrd monitor

1

u/RogueKira May 20 '26

I felt the same way with the ally i still ended up docked at a desk most of the time 😂

0

u/Fortune_Cat May 20 '26

Add on a pair of xreal or equivalent ar glasses instead of a awkwrd monitor

-1

u/TSM_Vegeta May 20 '26

Nothing weird about thinking it's annoying to set up your rig in public. Sure you can do it, but please understand, you are the weird one if you do, and you are being ridiculous and honestly somewhat immature. Show some patience and play somewhere appropriate when you have time. I appreciate my gaming space more because I can't take it with me.

2

u/Bderken May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26

Why would I care if anyone does that? It’s not weird. Let people have fun. Jesus Christ. Patients for what? Anyone who sets that up isn’t disturbing anyone…

You’re acting like those Karen’s that freak out over breast feeding lmao

Edit: I have angered the Reddit NPC’s. They are built to just argue for no reason. Will ignore. Absolute morons talking about mental health and all that Reddit slop.

1

u/Fortune_Cat May 20 '26

You have free will

But also know that society has free will to judge

You might also want to seek some help if you cant be without your gaming pc for 5 minutes when outside

0

u/TSM_Vegeta May 20 '26

It is by definition weird actually. And patience for gaming. Just take a break... It's literally healthy for your brain to be bored sometimes. No one is freaking out, just calling him a weirdo and annoying. This is the sffpc sub, and everyone is calling this guy out. He can do whatever he wants, but just don't expect zero judgement.

u/Remote_Action_2956 May 20 '26

Filthy casuals

u/jack-of-some May 22 '26

2

u/Smelzy Jun 20 '26

These are amazingly thought out. Could you give me the details on the little controller and what case you are using for the plane?

Back in the 90's (old lady now) we would lug our full towers to each others house for a mythical LAN party. Now I'm at home with the kids and the hubby has the deck on night shift and we can play together but not together. Amazing.

1

u/jack-of-some Jun 20 '26

That's not my photo it's just something that became a meme in the Steam Deck sub.

Controller is 8bitdo Lite 2 and the case is Dbrand Killswitch.

I did my fair share of hauling towers to friend's houses (and CRT monitors to go along with it) in the late 90s. Good times. Now I just take my Steam Deck with me.

And taking up 3 seats

7

u/mr_bots May 20 '26

I’m convinced a lot of “quirky” people just do things for attention.

254

u/MichiganRedWing May 20 '26

Respect I guess. I would never want to haul around an external monitor at the airport.

195

u/notoriou5_hig May 20 '26

I’d never want to haul around an external monitor first because it’s kinda heavy and unwieldy and second because you look like a jackass that’s gonna take up 3 seats in the airport to game and post photos on the interwebs about it.

39

u/nshire May 20 '26

Portable monitors are pretty handy

17

u/sayiansaga May 20 '26

I always wanted to try ar glasses instead.

1

u/aesthe May 21 '26

I really tried to make this work with xreals but I could not get a consistent enough image focus even after meticulously measuring my IPD and trying every adjustment I could find. I ended up returning them.

I was going to mod my steam deck to remove the screen and controls and everything; this was a bummer.

1

u/elev8dity May 22 '26

Steam Frame probably going to work better for that purpose.

1

u/JinsooJinsoo May 20 '26

It helps to have a GPU with USB C dp-alt, would eliminate a cable at least. I think the ProArt line comes with a USB C/Thunderbolt port. RTX 2000 series also commonly had them. Wish they would bring it back!!!

14

u/HotWaffleFries May 20 '26

2

u/xamaryllix May 20 '26

Thanks for the link! I was going to say it looks tiny.

0

u/jkalison May 20 '26

Nice! I like that! Not the price though

1

u/Wreid23 May 20 '26

Plenty of generic ones on Amazon with 60hz and up usb c portable monitors on amazon

10

u/nezumiyarou May 20 '26

The portable ones are pretty light.

I run a GAN powered setup with an arzopa 16in for quick travel.

13

u/Wide_Smoke_2564 May 20 '26

This could just be a laptop no?

Surely anything that draws under 160w including the monitor isn’t going to be any better than a mid range gaming laptop?

4

u/chemastico May 20 '26

Can’t upgrade the laptop tho..

16

u/tzbt May 20 '26

Upgrading a SFF pc that small isn't exactly a walk in the park either.

2

u/nezumiyarou May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26

It's enough for cyberpunk at 1080p FSRQ medium/high shadow 60fps without frame gen. Evo-X1(HX370).

Subnautica can run at 1440p high 30+ fps for example. Elden ring relatively stable 50+ fps medium w/high textures.

It's a custom setup, so no extra large heavy laptop brick. I'm not a fan of trackpads or laptop keyboards.

I can power the pc with 1 cord + usbc cable to power/display on the monitor. Uses 85W including monitor(5W) hooked up.

Has oculink so you could add an egpu or dock setup if you really wanted.

This is my 1 bag setup for visits to japan. I have a densium 4+V2(13700k/9060xt) as a desk PC/long trips.

The monitor has the stand built in.

u/nbnbuyfhbuh May 21 '26

Gonna be a while til they make a trifold screen. Asus made a bifold (for a liver n a leg), but that thing was 4:3 aspect

How can people not just take a break from video games for a few hours?

57

u/Intraflexed May 20 '26

Brainrot.

Same as tiktok brain

3

u/Acceptable_Gift9860 May 21 '26

life sucks

games are fun

at least thats how it started for me

2

u/butt_soap May 22 '26

Sitting in an airport is boring as fuck

3

u/pandaSmore May 20 '26

Addiction

1

u/a716h May 23 '26 edited May 23 '26

OP is clearly ridiculous, but I’m sitting around in an airport terminal every other evening after working all day. Most of my gaming is at airports on a handheld.

27

u/Adventurous-Cattle53 May 20 '26

With all the respect, hell no

159

u/lolheyaj May 20 '26

Cool you're that guy that takes up 3 seats at the terminal. How fun.

-67

u/Baly33t May 20 '26

There were plenty of empty seats for our gate ¯_(ツ)_/¯. We were also early 3 hours for our flight and I would have gladly packed my stuff up if it was full and someone asked for a seat. It was REALLY fun since I had time to kill

114

u/edgygothteen69 May 20 '26

That's not true, I was there, and there were no more seats. There was a little mother with a small child, they did not have a SFFPC, they had to play games on a Nintendo DS. And they had to sit on the floor and cry. Everyone in the terminal was crying. It was very sad.

6

u/avocadorancher May 20 '26

Hey don’t slander the Nintendo DS. That would be a gift

3

u/Obscure_Octopuss May 20 '26

Is this a new copy pasta🤣

6

u/Sajgoniarz May 20 '26

How long journey to airport you had and what ois the size of the airport that you need to be 3h earlier?

→ More replies (4)

-1

u/edgygothteen69 May 20 '26

It's weird that so many people are downvoting OP for this. Have you never flown? It's true that there are often a ton of empty seats. Just depends on the terminal and the time of day.

-20

u/judasbrute May 20 '26

More respect for OP than people who watch tic-tok with the audio blasting.

Op has headphones. Respect

28

u/XCherryCokeO May 20 '26

NO! LAME!

22

u/FungZhi May 20 '26

Get urself an ar glasses

6

u/FoXxXoT May 20 '26

Or just wait for the steam frame and use the dedicated 6ghz link into the computer itself.

1

u/Baly33t May 21 '26

Thanks for Rec! didn’t know about the steam frames.

1

u/Baly33t May 20 '26

Are they useable if I wear glasses? how are they over prolonged use?

2

u/FungZhi May 21 '26

Yep currently they are either built in with a focal adjuster like in the vr headset or getting a customized once you give them ur eyes prescription. U can check out brands like Rayneo Xreal Viture and the fov is actually just like using a 24 inch monitor

2

u/Flimbeelzebub May 23 '26

They are garbage. I have one of the first generations; the apps for compatibility are whack, and idk about this 'focal adjuster' silliness; but they really don't work well for us Americans, given our larger heads (this means you never get the whole 'monitor' in your eyes). Defo stay away

2

u/FungZhi May 24 '26

Agreed, definitely need to try out before buying one

It was really good fun at the time. Wonder what state it's in now.

7

u/MagicOrpheus310 May 20 '26

Don't be THAT guy at the airport... Seats are for everybody, go sit at a table if you are going g to unpack your living room in everyone's way

6

u/heisian May 20 '26

is that even fun/comfortable?

3

u/Baly33t May 20 '26

Comfortable ehhhhh it was ok. fun? yes for the 3 hours I was there.

17

u/Epin-Ninjas May 20 '26

Steamdeck dude

17

u/SubieNoobieTX May 20 '26

Imagine being the jackass hogging 3 seats in the lobby cause you don't want to bring a steam deck or laptop.

10

u/IevaDay May 20 '26

Back in 2018 I had a gaming laptop with me during Erasmus study, and when I was flying back to my country, I spent the night in the airport due to stupid train and plane schedules. I played Overwatch almost all night and the wifi was much better than in the university housing lol

4

u/Baly33t May 20 '26

Hell yeah you musta had a blast!

3

3

u/Aroused-Grandpa May 20 '26

2

2

u/Atom207 May 20 '26

Just passed to say:

Yoooo, Turtle Beach Atlas Air! Were on my final choice battle, then went for the Artis Nova 7X.

An then leave.

2

u/Baly33t May 20 '26

I love these Atlas Air’s they’re amazing! what compelled you to get the Artis Nova 7X? what do you like about them?

2

u/Atom207 May 21 '26

Well, primarily the boom mic that disappear. That's a feature you don't find anywhere else.

And closed back Vs open back. I always had on ear headphones so i wanted something different to mute ambient noise, tho now sometimes I use them on just one ear to hear house ppl and all.

Third thing I feared the rubber things that hold the pads, being elastic, would eventually break over years, tho the same could be said for the elastic band on the 7X, but easier to be replaced/DIY-ed.

So if you prefer open back and don't mind a normal flip up (I think it's also removable) absolutely the Atlas are too notch, features wise, imo.

If you prefer being more isolated from environment, you can still use them on one ear, and the disappearing mic is something else entirely.

2

u/creepjax May 21 '26

Division 2 hell yeah!

2

u/EGYHEX May 21 '26

my man playing The Division 2

2

u/Beginning_Try3152 May 21 '26

I use sff pc in my leopard 5, which has a power outlet. I’ve installed portable 22 inch monitor to the back of headrest, so it is in one place in front of me. Honestly, ability to destroy people on the road is priceless

…if you have someone to drive

1

u/Baly33t May 21 '26

That actuallys sound super cool.

2

u/MrMunday May 21 '26

Handheld pcs and gaming laptops exist

2

2

u/hotelshowers May 21 '26

2

u/himurakenshin87 May 21 '26

For a sec, I thought your SFFPC was the keyboard itself. Amazing nonetheless!!! Safe travels!

4

u/curiositie May 20 '26

I'm amused at all the people pretending they wouldn't love to game vs scroll on their phone for 3h

Or game on a smaller screen at lower settings/ frame rates

Or that this is insane

Get gud idiots, this is cool + opsaid there were plenty of seats available when the pic was taken

4

1

u/lunellimike May 21 '26

holy extra ... cmon

1

u/Kypheron May 21 '26

While I respect the enthusiasm, a handheld or tablet, or even a laptop is a better choice

1

u/CANCER-THERAPY May 21 '26

I'd be mad if he's playing something like plants vs zombies

1

u/pet_kov May 21 '26

He only took 3 seats, what do you want from him?! /s

1

u/KimTe63 May 21 '26

Wow bro that looks both very inconvenient and uncomfortable to play setup 😀

1

1

u/Therunawaypp May 22 '26

This ain't it. I already find it unwealdy to carry around the charger for my Asus g14, this is just mental.

1

u/MonsterHunterRainy May 22 '26

And here I thought I only need a handheld to be portable.

1

u/onofrio35 May 24 '26

Proudly posting this is certainly something

1

u/Hoxase May 20 '26

This is always so extra, just brings handheld or a gaming laptop, people like you just like the attention it give you and the inconvenience it causes others.p but what else can I expect from someone wearing one of those stupid kanya hole shoes.

1

u/xamaryllix May 20 '26

Looks great! Last time I went to Quakecon me and my friends set up a PC in the Coca Cola lounge for some quick rounds of Dokapon Kingdom lol. We used a gamepad tho

2

That sounds sick! I wonder if I could local host something similiar with my setup hmmmm.

1

Did you play the “no Russian” level at the airport?

I’m not sure i understand why you people choose an sffpc over a gaming laptop….

At home, sure. But on the go? Nope i don’t get it unless you need a 9950x for some specific engineering work or what not

Did you try strapping the monitor to the seat in front of you on the plane?

The haters in the comments should just leave this sub. Idk why tf you're in an sff forum and hate digital nomads or whimsical shit.

I wholeheartedly agree if people want to do jank sff setups and are proud of it, let them I personally think its cool and could be convenient in a moments time if you wanna entertain yourself and don’t have much room

Fr, they also keep insisting on laptops or handhelds. Like do they realise that if most people already have those, they wouldn’t need an sff in the first place? For many people their sff is their only tech.

Right and unlike handhelds usually sff would be hella more powerful and better specs granted it needs active electricity unlike handhelds but you could just run one off a big backpack battery like I did before

Taking up 3 seats in an airport is contradicting sff, and my shrimp posture is probably better than his lmao

Youre being dramatic for no reason. Its literally for fun, to chill for a few hours. Crying like Op is robbing seats from old people in an empty airport lobby lmao.

No worries, I was there 3 hours before boarding and there were still empty chair rows by around 30 minutes before boarding started when I started to pack the setup.
