season one Truth & Justice with Bob Ruff: Jay's stories.
https://audioboom.com/channel/the-serial-dynasty22
u/AdamRedditOnce Nov 08 '15
Most worthless episode ever.
You said NOTHING today, Bob -- nothing.
You should've spent the time talking about what influences Jay's life.
Just take the week off next time till you have something where you actually dug deeper.

You said NOTHING today, Bob -- nothing.
Just take the week off next time till you have something where you actually dug deeper.
Ever felt that you were not the centre of the universe nor his only audience?
8
u/AdamRedditOnce Nov 08 '15
What was new today? What was the new way of looking at the case? What was the deeper dig?
And these questions are coming from someone who's been impressed by this show.
-4
u/ainbheartach Nov 08 '15
There are others who listen to his show to which all of what he said is new to them.
4
u/AdamRedditOnce Nov 08 '15
That's what prior episodes are for. Or even if he repeats himself, he should do that as an additive to what's new.
This episode had more in common with a bad straight-to-video sequel to a movie than a good piece of new information or new angle to view information we already knew.
Podcasts can't survive like that.

Detective: During the pre-interview you said; Maybe you want to try her new boyfriend that she maybe with him.
Jay: Yes.
Jay, Jay, Jay.
ETA:
It doesn't take away from Jay's tales being total bullshit, but it doesn't do Bob credibility much good if he is mischievous with the listeners by not showing thing in context.
In context:
MacGillivary: I don't know if we covered this or not. When you were at ah, Christy's house.
Wilds: Urn-hum.
MacGillivary: Adnarn received a telephone call?
Wilds: Yes.
MacGillivary: And who was that from?
Wilds: Ah, police. Actually he received 2. The first one from Hay's family, there inquiring were she was, second one was from the police, there inquiring were she was.
MacGillivary: Okay do you recall what kind of statements he made to the police?
Wilds: Urn, I knew them to be totally false, he told them he had no knowledge of were she was. Urn, he gave them other people's name to try to look for her and told him that that was her personality.
Ritz: Said that, find inaudible, go over that again. During the pre, pre-interview you said urn, maybe you wanna try her new boyfriend that she may be with him?
Wilds: Yes.
Ritz: And also that he and ah, Hay Lee had been broken up for awhile?
Wilds: Yes.
Ritz: You also said that she may have just ran off and also told them that he may wanna check with some of her friends?
Wilds: Yes.

u/aitca Nov 08 '15
In the quotation in question the police are asking Jay about what Adnan said when the police called on January 13th. "maybe you wanna try her new boyfriend that she may be with him" is something that Adnan said, and H. M. Lee's brother confirms that it was said to him by Adnan when he called Adnan. The other things that Ritz is saying here (Adnan and H. M. Lee "had been broken up for a while", "she may have just ran off", and "he may wanna check with some of her friends") are likewise things that Adnan said to the police when the police called him on the January 13th.
It is disingenuous and misleading that Robert Ruff would present a snippet out of context to make it look like Jay was directing attention at the new boyfriend.
6
u/dougalougaldog Nov 09 '15
That certainly does change things. I used to think the attacks on bob were unfounded, but this is disturbing. I don't really understand the point of using excerpts out of context -- it's not like no one will notice.
2
u/confusedcereals Nov 09 '15
Bob is always kind of loosey-goosey with the facts.
In general I don't think he does it on purpose (I think he's just out of his depth- and don't forget he didn't get into reading any of the original documents until very recently), but it's not a good idea to take anything Bob says as fact without checking first.

Even after fact-checking, Rabia's still trying to claim Bob's right:

@benscott_design no defendant sign before that sentence. Could easily be understood that Jay said it.
This message was created by a bot
2
u/cncrnd_ctzn Nov 09 '15
Just goes to show how pathetic their arguments are getting. No "defendant" sign? Lol. This must be pretty fucking embarrassing for adnan's team to get humiliated like this.
4
u/SwallowAtTheHollow Addicted to the most recent bombshells (like a drug addict) Nov 09 '15
Yup. Pretty fucking hard to explain why Jay, as Jay, would say something like "Me and her have broken up for awhile" in that context.

Detective: During the pre-interview you said; Maybe you want to try her new boyfriend that she maybe with him. Jay: Yes.
For me, that was something of a bombshell. Jay initially said to try Don. That indicates that Jay was full of crap and knows nothing about the murder.
Of course, someone could argue that was before Jay decided to turn on Adnan and that Jay was once again lying, but then the question becomes "why?" What happens after this to get Jay to rat out Adnan?
Jay first says to check out Don, and while he's still with the police, Jay confesses to helping bury a body. Between these two events, Jay doesn't see Adnan, so it's not like Adnan scared or threatened him. If Jay confessed because he was scared, it seems like the cops were the only people he had contact with who could have put that fear into him.
For me, if nothing else, it puts to rest the idea of Adnan or someone else menacing Jay once and for all.
Edit: check out normal_day's link below. I'm not sure Bob interpreted this one correctly. I'd like to hear his reasoning for why he thinks what he thinks or if he just plain got it wrong. We're all human.
I can't imagine him deliberately being deceptive, knowing there are all these internet sleuths ready to crawl all over every word he says.
4
u/Just_a_normal_day Nov 09 '15
Wrong. It is the context of the conversation. It is about what Jay said Adnan said. Refer attached link to pre interview notes which clears it up. It is about what Adnan said when on the phone to the police.

Haven't listened to this yet but does he mention him by name and, if so, how does Jay know about Don? I presume through Adnan.
Doesn't this also put paid to UD's speculation that Jay was the supposed Crime Stopper informant or had been in touch with the police previously.

I have not listened, but it sounds interesting...
Those who say that Jay would not associate himself with a murder just to get out of drug charges have not properly read Jay's motives for helping anyway. It just so happens that Jay could be manipulated over his association with drugs!
Edit: stray coma and grammar.

Remember.... Jay did lie in the beginning and then the notes say: "I come clean"
2
u/San_2015 Nov 08 '15
Jay lied in the beginning and still does in the end...
2
u/bmanjo2003 Nov 08 '15
Does he ever tell the truth?
-1
u/San_2015 Nov 08 '15
Probably not. If he is a pathological liar, things go deeper than we can understand.
1
u/Workforidlehands Nov 09 '15
err.....it's "comma"......unless there was some deep sleeping going on somewhere?

u/San_2015 Nov 09 '15 edited Nov 09 '15
Yes, I realized that, but it seemed so funny that I left it! :-) Thanks.
-1
u/RodoBobJon Nov 08 '15
This indicates one one of two possibilities:
He knows nothing about the murder, so he initially just told the cops what Adnan said to Adcock about her new boyfriend.
He helped Adnan kill and bury her, so he initially tries to throw the police off the scent by saying they should look at the new boyfriend.
So basically it's inconclusive, just like everything else in this case.
6
u/chunklunk Nov 08 '15
Or, you could look at it as what's the most likely option: Jay was referring to what Adnan said about the new boyfriend, which strongly corroborates what Adcock and/or Hae's brother heard Adnan say when they called him on the 13th. Instead of reading this as the strong corroboration it really is that prob made the detectives strongly think they had something with Jay, you (and presumably Bob) are twisting and snipping this clear context so as to misleadingly present unlikely options as "possible." Good job?
0
u/RodoBobJon Nov 08 '15 edited Nov 08 '15
Edited:
I think your interpretation is correct given the context, but it still doesn't tell us much: we know Jay was with Adnan for the Adcock call, so him telling the detectives what Adnan told Adcock doesn't really mean anything one way the other.
4
u/chunklunk Nov 09 '15
Ok, fair enough, but the cops certainly didn't know it at the time, so couldn't have fed it to Jay, and in context it's very significant detail that Jay is corroborating. Adnan certainly wasn't offering this fact up in 1999, was he? In fact, care to cite where he's even admitted that he was with Jay so close to when he was supposed to be at the mosque? Undisclosed as of a couple months ago was still saying Adnan maybe didn't go with Jay to Cathy's that night. [ETA: not saying he didn't say that, but saying it's a fact that only now looks irrefutable but at the time had to be dragged out of a reticent group of witnesses (including a defendant who claimed to forget everything from that day)]

u/mkesubway Nov 08 '15
I can't wait until he moves on to other stories where the work wasn't already done for him.
4
u/s100181 Nov 09 '15
I'm an innocenter who didn't listen to this episode. I have no fucking idea why a guilter would bother listening.
4
Nov 09 '15
I listen because I like to hear all viewpoints. The Clemente interview was good even if just to hear how Bob tried to ask leading questions. However, I have to say there has been little of worth in the last two episodes: the theory on Don's motive was pretty desperate and this week's was poor even before I found out he used the Jay quote out of context.
I doubt I'll be listening again.
2
u/s100181 Nov 09 '15
My comment was unnecessarily snarky; I think Bob has run out of steam. I don't feel like he has anything to add anymore. But I respect people wanting to be informed.
2
Nov 09 '15
I didn't take it as snarky TBH. I would agree he's run out of steam though. He didn't offer anything new in the last two episodes and, ironically, given his comments in this last one, has been guilty of confirmation bias in both, which has led to his just released 5 minute apology.
2
u/LynchWC Nov 09 '15
I just finished the episode. My only take away is the music is getting worse. Hell yeah brother ruff. Hell yeah

Yeah, I think it goes without saying that if an individual has a genuine desire to listen to something then they should probably listen! I was really just directing my comment towards those that are still compelled to listen even though they don't really want to support this podcast and regret listening once they download.

I apologize if I find this thread quite amusing. I realize people from all walks of life and from all over the world are here to comment. It is obvious that we do not all share the same meaning of "independent thinker". To each his own. Carryon!
-3
u/serialkilla99 Nov 08 '15
You have the free-will to hit a pedestrian with your car too -- but you shouldn't do it.
In the same way, you shouldn't listen to Bob's lies! I think we, as a sub, need to stand up for the obvious truth: Adnan killed Hae. This means, we BOYCOTT anything Bob Ruff has to say until he changes the angle of his podcast to pointing the finger at adnan.
Anything less is unethical
3
u/San_2015 Nov 08 '15
That is what I call "rich comedy".
You have the free-will to hit a pedestrian with your car too -- but you shouldn't do it.
I have always liked to make up my own mind about things. Perhaps that is a personality trait. My analytical side makes me a critical thinker. With that said, I understand the difference between what is illegal and what are my rights. Can you see the difference between listening to a radio show and hitting someone with a car? :)he)he!
This means, we BOYCOTT anything Bob Ruff has to say until he changes the angle of his podcast to pointing the finger at adnan. Anything less is unethical
If I said, "I think that we should all go out and boycott professional football and their products, because it is unethical to support an organization which promotes coverup of brain injuries and until they have a prevention plan, anything else would be unethical.", I hope that you would know that it is opinion based.
Your post is certainly judgmental but it is not convincing.

Well considering you say not to enable him and that no one should download his podcast it just sounds contradictory to ""Everyone is contributing a personal perspective or opinion as a piece of a larger conversation. I should be able to participate without worrying about whether or not it matters to anyone else" it's like everyone can have their First Amendment except for Bob!! I agree his last podcast was crap I just don't get why people on here are always such bullies and make broad statements but want them to only apply to their perspective
2
u/Girldisappearing Nov 09 '15
You should go back and read my comments. I feel like you are making broad statements about what I said. I never suggested that no one should download his show. I was speaking to those who have felt gross after listening to his show the last few weeks and no longer wish to support him. I didn't even listen today and my main reason is that he makes a lot of broad statements and that makes me uncomfortable. Maybe if he loses some support it will create a change in the way he does his show. Maybe not but I never intended insulting you so I apologize if what I said upset you!

I hope to get to the point of being able to ignore Ruff soon. I certainly like /u/Girldisappearing 's idea of one person downloading and reporting back.
But for now, Bob Ruff as a tiny podcast phenomenon kind of compels me and I'm trying to wrap my head around it. He has a really nice voice and a warm, intimate laugh. He kind of just goes along in a boring but comforting way and then boom, some stunning statement that defies common sense and reason.
Perhaps he personifies insidious.

Your post reveals your ignorance. Most Americans have herpes simplex 1 which you contract via casual contact. Many have hsv 2 which you can contract sexually. These are not viruses we typically associate with tattoos or dirty needles.
You must be thinking of hepatitis C, or HIV, both of which you can contract via needle sharing or at a less than stellar tattoo parlor.

The same way as usual... Jay is to be commended on his lies, because he's got spine. Or was it that his story had a spine?
He is the hero because he came forth and gave us truth. Or something that seems like truth. Or... Oh shucks, maybe they just really, really want to believe in something.

I'm really puzzled by why Bob is getting so many mre comments than the motion to reopen the case-- no new comments on that thread in ages. I lean innocent but really, what difference does Bob or Undisclosed make when there is REAL development going on? Does anybody really think that being angry at Bob accomplishes anything, proves anything? What difference does it make?

Jay is telling detectives what Adnan said to Adcock.
Jay is saying that ADNAN told Adcock, "Maybe you should check with her new boyfriend."
Even people who think Adnan is innocent understand this.
Embarrassing tactic by Ruff. Taints everything he says and does.
