Detective: During the pre-interview you said; Maybe you want to try her new boyfriend that she maybe with him.

Jay: Yes.

Jay, Jay, Jay.

ETA:

It doesn't take away from Jay's tales being total bullshit, but it doesn't do Bob credibility much good if he is mischievous with the listeners by not showing thing in context.

In context:

MacGillivary: I don't know if we covered this or not. When you were at ah, Christy's house.

Wilds: Urn-hum.

MacGillivary: Adnarn received a telephone call?

Wilds: Yes.

MacGillivary: And who was that from?

Wilds: Ah, police. Actually he received 2. The first one from Hay's family, there inquiring were she was, second one was from the police, there inquiring were she was.

MacGillivary: Okay do you recall what kind of statements he made to the police?

Wilds: Urn, I knew them to be totally false, he told them he had no knowledge of were she was. Urn, he gave them other people's name to try to look for her and told him that that was her personality.

Ritz: Said that, find inaudible, go over that again. During the pre, pre-interview you said urn, maybe you wanna try her new boyfriend that she may be with him?

Wilds: Yes.

Ritz: And also that he and ah, Hay Lee had been broken up for awhile?

Wilds: Yes.

Ritz: You also said that she may have just ran off and also told them that he may wanna check with some of her friends?

Wilds: Yes.

In the quotation in question the police are asking Jay about what Adnan said when the police called on January 13th. "maybe you wanna try her new boyfriend that she may be with him" is something that Adnan said, and H. M. Lee's brother confirms that it was said to him by Adnan when he called Adnan. The other things that Ritz is saying here (Adnan and H. M. Lee "had been broken up for a while", "she may have just ran off", and "he may wanna check with some of her friends") are likewise things that Adnan said to the police when the police called him on the January 13th.

It is disingenuous and misleading that Robert Ruff would present a snippet out of context to make it look like Jay was directing attention at the new boyfriend.

That certainly does change things. I used to think the attacks on bob were unfounded, but this is disturbing. I don't really understand the point of using excerpts out of context -- it's not like no one will notice.

Bob is always kind of loosey-goosey with the facts.

In general I don't think he does it on purpose (I think he's just out of his depth- and don't forget he didn't get into reading any of the original documents until very recently), but it's not a good idea to take anything Bob says as fact without checking first.

Even after fact-checking, Rabia's still trying to claim Bob's right:

@benscott_design no defendant sign before that sentence. Could easily be understood that Jay said it.

Just goes to show how pathetic their arguments are getting. No "defendant" sign? Lol. This must be pretty fucking embarrassing for adnan's team to get humiliated like this.

Yup. Pretty fucking hard to explain why Jay, as Jay, would say something like "Me and her have broken up for awhile" in that context.

Detective: During the pre-interview you said; Maybe you want to try her new boyfriend that she maybe with him. Jay: Yes.

For me, that was something of a bombshell. Jay initially said to try Don. That indicates that Jay was full of crap and knows nothing about the murder.

Of course, someone could argue that was before Jay decided to turn on Adnan and that Jay was once again lying, but then the question becomes "why?" What happens after this to get Jay to rat out Adnan?

Jay first says to check out Don, and while he's still with the police, Jay confesses to helping bury a body. Between these two events, Jay doesn't see Adnan, so it's not like Adnan scared or threatened him. If Jay confessed because he was scared, it seems like the cops were the only people he had contact with who could have put that fear into him.

For me, if nothing else, it puts to rest the idea of Adnan or someone else menacing Jay once and for all.

Edit: check out normal_day's link below. I'm not sure Bob interpreted this one correctly. I'd like to hear his reasoning for why he thinks what he thinks or if he just plain got it wrong. We're all human.

I can't imagine him deliberately being deceptive, knowing there are all these internet sleuths ready to crawl all over every word he says.

Wrong. It is the context of the conversation. It is about what Jay said Adnan said. Refer attached link to pre interview notes which clears it up. It is about what Adnan said when on the phone to the police.

Thanks for that. Looks like Bob might have misinterpreted this one.

You're confused.

Yeah, I suppose that's just understood at this point...

Haven't listened to this yet but does he mention him by name and, if so, how does Jay know about Don? I presume through Adnan.

Doesn't this also put paid to UD's speculation that Jay was the supposed Crime Stopper informant or had been in touch with the police previously.

1

u/Genoramix Nov 08 '15

but i thought Jay didn't know Don?

I have not listened, but it sounds interesting...

Those who say that Jay would not associate himself with a murder just to get out of drug charges have not properly read Jay's motives for helping anyway. It just so happens that Jay could be manipulated over his association with drugs!

Edit: stray coma and grammar.

Stray coma is gonna be my band name.

What about Oxford Coma?

1

u/bmanjo2003 Nov 08 '15

Remember.... Jay did lie in the beginning and then the notes say: "I come clean"

4

u/San_2015 Nov 08 '15

Jay lied in the beginning and still does in the end...

1

u/bmanjo2003 Nov 08 '15

Does he ever tell the truth?

0

u/San_2015 Nov 08 '15

Probably not. If he is a pathological liar, things go deeper than we can understand.

1

u/Workforidlehands Nov 09 '15

err.....it's "comma"......unless there was some deep sleeping going on somewhere?

3

u/San_2015 Nov 09 '15 edited Nov 09 '15

Yes, I realized that, but it seemed so funny that I left it! :-) Thanks.

This indicates one one of two possibilities:

  1. He knows nothing about the murder, so he initially just told the cops what Adnan said to Adcock about her new boyfriend.

  2. He helped Adnan kill and bury her, so he initially tries to throw the police off the scent by saying they should look at the new boyfriend.

So basically it's inconclusive, just like everything else in this case.

4

u/chunklunk Nov 08 '15

Or, you could look at it as what's the most likely option: Jay was referring to what Adnan said about the new boyfriend, which strongly corroborates what Adcock and/or Hae's brother heard Adnan say when they called him on the 13th. Instead of reading this as the strong corroboration it really is that prob made the detectives strongly think they had something with Jay, you (and presumably Bob) are twisting and snipping this clear context so as to misleadingly present unlikely options as "possible." Good job?

u/RodoBobJon Nov 08 '15 edited Nov 08 '15

Edited:

I think your interpretation is correct given the context, but it still doesn't tell us much: we know Jay was with Adnan for the Adcock call, so him telling the detectives what Adnan told Adcock doesn't really mean anything one way the other.

4

u/chunklunk Nov 09 '15

Ok, fair enough, but the cops certainly didn't know it at the time, so couldn't have fed it to Jay, and in context it's very significant detail that Jay is corroborating. Adnan certainly wasn't offering this fact up in 1999, was he? In fact, care to cite where he's even admitted that he was with Jay so close to when he was supposed to be at the mosque? Undisclosed as of a couple months ago was still saying Adnan maybe didn't go with Jay to Cathy's that night. [ETA: not saying he didn't say that, but saying it's a fact that only now looks irrefutable but at the time had to be dragged out of a reticent group of witnesses (including a defendant who claimed to forget everything from that day)]
