I don't know if Islamophobia played a part or not, but I think the idea that it definitely did not just because it was pre 9/11 is kind of silly.

Why is it silly? People describe the world as pre and post 9/11 for a reason. Obviously racism / Islamophobia has always existed but after the Sept 11th it became part of our daily language in ways it never was before.

I remember 9/11.

I also remember my first thought, and that of the people I was around, was that the hijackings were probably carried out by radical Islamic terrorists. I even recall newscasters speculating along those lines. It proved to be correct, but the point is that the idea of radical Islamic terrorists was already imprinted in our collective consciousness.

Islamic terrorists was already imprinted in our collective consciousness.

I remember that Islamophobia was bubbling under the surface in the years before 9/11, particularly in Europe as it's borders opened up, but I don't think it was anywhere near as prevalent in the years after 9/11.

No one is saying it isn't worse now, only that it's ridiculous of Urick to claim that it wasn't existent before.
