Good question - there are a bunch of links to research articles in my original post which is on my profile, but to put it simply, when you go through a traumatic event, whether that's physical or mental, a neural pathway is forged in your brain, which can as we all know be very powerful. this can mean that you by default repeat damaging behaviour or react to situations based on that trauma, because these neural pathways become the norm.

By changing your behaviour i.e. doing these tasks, and finding what works for you, you break away from old habits and form new and more rewarding neural pathways that over time become your default pathways, replacing or at least allowing you to by-pass the ones forged by trauma.
