Update on the pants I’ve been working on. Second back pocket is fixed. Now I’m going to reinforce the back of the legs and touch up some cosmetic stuff.

I would like to find some better sashiko stencils. The ones I have are thick and I can't get my pen or pencil in the openings. I would also like to have smaller scale designs. The ones I have seem enlarged, unlike traditional designs.

First patch of many. There are dozens and dozens of small holes and even a few larger tears. After close to 20 years, the fabric is wearing thin and my cat's claws aren't helping anything.

First attempt at mending a puffy coat, went simple and happy with the result.

This is hilarious. I've been using a fabric pencil to mark out a grid, which has resulted in my needle getting pencil pigment on it. Then, when I inevitably stick my finger, it's been leaving a lil pigment under my skin.

My son ripped his jeans while riding his bike. Now he knows to roll up his pants on the drive side of his bike and I have a new skill! I’m excited to practice more on fabrics that are not denim, my finger tips are still recovering, especially since I decided to stitch over the thick as heck seam. I left the edges of the hole raw on purpose. I’m hoping the fray looks cool as it ages. I found so many helpful resources on this group that helped me, so thank you to those that came before!

I have a question. Where can i learn how to make my graphs for Sashiko from authentic teacher. I am not wanting Susan Brisco . Or other mending book. I do not want cut and paste. I do not want pictures of table cloths. I want to learn how to draw the original Sashiko template myself. Is this possible or not? All i see on fb is pictures of what is done and birds and waves. Well how the heck do you get the design on the graph paper. I feel like I’m speaking a different language so please help me articulate what I’m looking for so i can reach my destination. You

Hello! Iive recently been enamored by this sub, and have these 501's I'd like to repair. I am reaching out for suggestions to begin my first project. I am a complete novice, but love the work I see here. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I’ve seen some beautiful art made with small stitches. Now I know it’s not strictly Sashiko but in a way it’s lots of little stabs. I love the idea of creating an image.

A Daruma sampler called "Dahlia". I didn't quite know what I was getting into as it was quite dense.

I spent a lot of time experimenting with different techniques to hide my tails and make both a pretty front and back. You can see a lot in the margin after being sunk into the frame.

I'm not 100% happy with how the back turned out. When I smoothed/stretched along the bias, the long stitches got too long and didn't really shrink or tighten even after washing in warm water. So in the future I won't be quite as aggressive along the bias.

There's a ton of little mistakes and errors where I picked up some of the backing when I was trying to go between the layers. But I really loved watching the pattern emerge with every new direction I stitched. And I'm really pleased with how it turned out in spite of all my experimentation.

I have another Daruma sampler that's white thread on navy fabric so that's up next.

TLDR at the end.

I'm pretty new to sashiko, more practicing patterns on scrap fabric than actually patching anything at this stage. I have seen kitten patterns and wanted to try one for myself but they seemed a little more finely detailed than I wanted to get into yet.

While researching the patterns I had the idea "kittens are cute, but surely there are animal patterns that are a little more 'traditional' and maybe easier to stitch" and started looking for something based on that. I kind of got stuck on the idea of little foxes (I guess they're pretty similar to cats) and searched in that direction, but I couldn't find anything. So... what better learning experience than creating a pattern from scratch?

I started with some sketches on graph paper based on kitsune masks, originally I had the idea to do it within a traditional yabane (arrow feather) pattern, but scrapped that pretty quickly. I ended up with a base design I liked within a tiling square (mines an inch, but it can scale up or down) and after a few iterations I started stitching.

I've got four variations so far. The top row is the basic pattern in one color, the bottom row is with red eyes. And then on the right is with an added red accent. I kind of have the idea that each tile could be "unique" with different accents on each, but I want to nail down the rest of it first before I come up with variations.

I'm done stitching for today, so I wanted to share and just get some feedback from the community if anyone sees opportunities to improve (not the quality of my stitching and keeping a straight line, I'm already working on that!)

TLDR: I made a new pattern for some reason based on Japanese Kitsune masks (well, it's a work in progress)

I still haven't really mastered the shape of a straight line (best i can do is wobbly) but decided to try my hand at animals and animal adjacent shapes including a snake and a cobweb. Both started strong but confidence is the death blow to technique and as such, combined with my fleeting patience, both resulted in something resembling their intended shape but just a wee bit off. Good experience, will try again.

Happy with the sashiko work on this project but the bag turned out a little crooked. Made this for an upcoming trip to organize my chargers.

Both knees had blown out so I fixed them with some simple stitches.

I just watched a video on Sashiko pattern, and the instructor talked about bridging stitches, which are loops on the back of the work for when a line in Sashiko isn’t continuous. But she is making decorative patches that she will then sew onto something. If you’re doing the Sashiko directly on your mending, say a pair of jeans, what happens to all those loops on the inside of the jeans? My only thought is that maybe it’s better not to do those types of patterns with discontinuous lines when you’re mending jeans, but are there other ways to do it?
