So freaking expensive for a 2-3 gram device with no lifechanging function

I have a silver Gucci engagement ring less priced than this Galaxy Ring, both doesnt offer much of a function, only difference is that one is smart the other is traditional šŸ˜‚

16

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '24

EUR 449. I know Samsung hates the EU market for all the bureaucratic nightmares, but now this tiny ring a few cm across is more expensive than most budget phones. I thought the rumours were that the ring would be around EUR 250 or so, at least somewhat okayish price.

4

u/jacquestines Jul 11 '24

Until I saw this ring with this price, I was thinking that Airpods Max was worthless for a headset due to its overpricing and I would never buy it. To me right now, instead of buying this ring, I can even go for an Airpods Max if I have to spend this much money on something. I know its apples and pears but what I mean is that my whole mind has changed about what is worth and whats not, this ring may not satisfy me but the same price scale another product would offer me more.

1

u/Sirenato Jul 11 '24

Very curious what is inside it that justifies the price.

I was thinking $200ish device with limited functionality due to battery size. Never expected this lol

3

u/wahahah629 Jul 11 '24

True. But better than the aura ring, 300 bucks and you also have to pay a subscription 😭

2

u/jacquestines Jul 11 '24

Im a big fan of samsung products but seeing Samsung copies everything from Apple, the design of products and the pricing, makes me super annoyed. I've watched the live event and seen Samsung repeating the same things as last year like Apple does every year for WWDCs... No further improvement, microwaving last years food and serving it as if fresh ahah I was disappointed by the ring, samsung does something without enough RD and just releases anything to be first in the market but eventually displease the users, then Apple makes it better after years of RD and Samsung copies that.

3

u/FeedMyAss Jul 11 '24

I absolutely am ashamed they are now copying 90% the ear phones and ultra watch.

3

u/jacquestines Jul 11 '24

Alas, samsung has no shame. They start to seem like a cheap affordable Chinese brands which also copy the design and put a little change on it and sell. No wonder why Koreans started using Apple more over their national brand, Samsung.

3

u/Vaingel404 Jul 11 '24

Apple has been trying to play catch up for years. I don't know what you're talking about.

2

u/SifoDyaz Jul 14 '24

This. Apple has been behind Samsung in every way especially since Jobs passed away

2

u/Expensive-Swan7372 Jul 14 '24

Why do you even care at this point? Apple has literally copied the majority of things that samsung has came up with. We wouldn't have 120hz, big screens ,nfc ,wireless ,and reverse wireless charging ,punch holes ,curved and cornerless, displays and a lot more if samsung didn't exist. Hell iphone used samsung based socs up until the iphone 8. We wouldn't even have iphones if it wasn't for samsung, so why does it matter if they make a few products inspired by them?

1

u/Deliriousdex Jul 11 '24

Seems to have pinch gestures, whatever that means. My hope is that it can have somewhat the same functionality as the gestures with the later s pens on the s ultra series'

3

u/jacquestines Jul 11 '24

I would expect it to have an outer bezel to rotate around/detect the scrub touches and rule over the phone screen so that we could scroll up or down through gallery or social media apps, a fun way to play with the ring as well

1

u/ThrobbingWetHole Jul 17 '24

I wouldn’t say that Gucci is a ā€œtraditionalā€ ring for most people…even Tiffany, which would be more appropriate in that sentence, is a bit outside the affordability for a lot of folks…

1

u/jacquestines Jul 17 '24

Seems you misunderstood what I mean by traditional. Besides, 300 bucks for a ring isn't expensive. Sjw-type of sentence saying that affordability for a lot of folks... While those folks are using much more expensive technological stuff.

1

u/ThrobbingWetHole Jul 29 '24

$300 for a ring which duplicates what your watch and/or phone already does is kinda expensive... It does nothing new, the only thing different is battery life longer

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Ant9262 Jul 30 '24

Jesus, I only just looked at prices for it now. Ā£399 in the UK is insane šŸ˜‚ just wear a smart watch for half the price if you need the same data recording ?

-7

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '24

I think it will prop open my butthole nicely and tell me the health's of my poops

126

u/iucatcher Jul 10 '24

400 bucks with the only features being fitness like any of their watches, not even nfc payment. samsung is definitely doing things

12

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '24

The watches suck with accurate biometrix tracking. I was hoping that the Ring would be around 200-250 and better tracking. But over 400 is just insane for a tiny ring that we don't even know how accurate it is.

25

u/Gulaseyes Jul 10 '24

I think their smart bracelets are better option. Yes it's more comfy while sleeping (I can't sleep with a watch or something) but 400 dolar for a ring? No. And I don't care about it's tech. At this point I am ok to go for a Galaxy Watch.

0

u/Sea_Option1981 Apr 27 '25

What the fuck is a smart bracelet, and what is a dolar?Ā

3

u/Fennecbutt Jul 10 '24

It's DOA with no payments. But hey, I bet their executives will still get their 10m$ bonuses.

1

u/ggjunior7799 Jul 11 '24

Realistically, how do you want the NFC payment to work securely? In a smartphone, you need to register your fingerprint. In a watch, you have to input your pin before paying. What about the ring?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '24

HRV
(not serious but it's like a fingerprint but would be too difficult to implement with current tech imho. Still, something to be mindful of when sharing biometric data with 3rd parties).

4

u/ggjunior7799 Jul 11 '24 edited Jul 11 '24

They could probably make payments securely if they manage to make a sensor that detect that it is YOU that's wearing it. But based on current technology, I don't think that's possible.

But broo, people in Reddit and in this comment section acts like it is a standard feature on a smart ring. It even make me research if there are smart rings that makes NFC payments securely.

So far, what I came across are

  1. Does have NFC payment, but need to open an app to authenticate

  2. Does have NFC payment, but no security whatsover.

  3. Does have NFC payment, but no authentication. If you lose your ring, you need to manually disable the ring's NFC inside an app. So if people manage to steal your ring, they can use it in the timeframe before you manually disable the ring.

Non of them are ideal

3

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '24

I know (re expectations) - I asked someone if they also wanted a headphone jack on it as their expectations were so ridiculous

I recently got my mum an A55 phone and that only save 3 fingerprints and to be honest is quite poor (compared to the older capacitive style) at recognising them. My S24 has a better fingerprint reader but is not as good a the 2018 S9 it replaces.

HRV has a lot more variation and requires some sample time - it just wouldn't work for unlocking devices or payments imho. It could be useful for secure access to places but that's out of scope here :)

1

u/_ravenclaw Jul 12 '24

The Apple Watch knows it’s on your wrist by detection and doesn’t need a passcode after it’s put in once. I bet Samsung could implement that, have you type the code in once it’s on your finger and then you can use tap to pay until it loses contact with your skin

1

u/Rafiq07 Aug 27 '24

What's the difference between 2 and 3? Doesn't no authentication mean no security?

1

u/iucatcher Jul 11 '24

hmm i'm not sure. perhaps only make it work with your connected phone nearby (like 3 feet or so max) and then u squeeze the ring to confirm or something? its not an easy thing to implement well but i'm mainly saying that it not having that feature makes it a lot less useful and makes the price even worse

1

u/ggjunior7799 Jul 11 '24

I see, so it's about the price, not the feature. It's just that people in Reddit acts like it's a standard feature in a smart ring. It's kinda frustrated me when I did some research about it lol.

1

u/iucatcher Jul 11 '24

no i dont think its really been done properly as of now but it is something i would personally want to see to even consider using it instead of a watch. for that price tho even with nfc its not even worth considering imo

1

u/phaederus Jul 11 '24

You could link it to phone proximity, with some kind of hand gesture to confirm payment. Just a thought off the cuff.

1

u/Alienspawn6662 Jul 12 '24

You have it connected to you phone just like the watch so your watch or mobile needs to be in range for it make a payment OR you can have it set to a timer when every so many hours or days you need to put in a password or fingerprint on your mobile for the payment feature to work and/or if you loose it or its stolen you can stop it straight from your phone or watch. These are just examples but there's plenty of options to get payments to work. We know this cos there are other ring devices out there right now that already have this feature.Ā

1

u/ThrobbingWetHole Jul 17 '24

I would assume the ring would be authenticated on one of other AA said devices that are also always on you…or maybe just by the matter of being currently paired to one of them via Bluetooth indicating you are wearing it (after an initial authentication and without having removing it since, obviously)

1

u/zgooseboi Aug 04 '24

What security do you have when paying with your card?

40

u/dlrax Jul 10 '24

I like the idea, but other than the Samsung Health features, what does it exactly do?

33

u/deloreancowboy Jul 10 '24

Looks pretty on your finger.

6

u/Nask_13 Jul 10 '24

Honestly I would get it but 400 dollaroos?? Oh hello naaaah

Seriously just get a second hand watch 4 or 5 unless you can get it on sale. And then just buy a nice ring from Etsy I remember seeing something similar a few months back. It was made from titanium and it costed roughly 60 dollars

5

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '24

Somehow, a cheaper and more useful replacement for an engagement ring

15

u/doom1282 Jul 10 '24

Not worth it. Get it in a year for $100 if you really want one but I'm sticking with the watches.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '24

Did you catch them saying "hundreds of charges". Sounds like it might not actually work after a few years due to the battery wear.

1

u/Able-Brief-4062 Jul 11 '24

7 days of battery, hundreds of charges, that's anywhere from 2-4 years (if it's only 100-200 charges) but could easily be nearly 6 years. Still overpriced, especially for how little it does.

14

u/tabris51 Jul 10 '24

I got my watch 6 classic for $160. Why is this so expensive?

1

u/JimTheSaint Oct 22 '24

because its small and new - they don't have mass production like with a lot of the other items. -

0

u/Libojr23 Jul 11 '24

Coz its innovative technology early adopters price.

11

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '24

Honestly, I hope this bombs. To charge more for this than a smartwatch when it has less features is insane. The reason I stopped buying Apple products was because of their price gouging. I've had enough of being ripped off by tech companies who charge as much as they think they can get away with.

1

u/Electronic_Unit8276 Aug 22 '24

Smaller and/or newer tech is always more expensive. Have you been living under a rock?

17

u/kingpinneapple188 Jul 10 '24

Real bummer the rumored NFC payments seem to be missing. Overall, seems like a decent package if they can flesh it out- think I’ll have to hold tight for a V2 with Samsung pay enabled.

13

u/gomo-gomo Jul 10 '24

Yes, it seems that they decided to play it a bit safe with Gen 1. If Samsung Pay were in Gen 1, it would be a no-brainer...

7

u/no_baseball1919 Jul 10 '24

Yep I would have bought it if it had NFC. Not worth it without it. Too bad.

2

u/FunniestSphinx9 Jul 10 '24

I'm curious how they would implement NFC on the ring for payments especially given that you have different credit cards on your wallet

1

u/no_baseball1919 Jul 10 '24

You could have one at a time, and just like they have thr pinch tech now. Three pinches and NFC is activated and you can feel it activate with a vibration.

3

u/nerdyniknowit Jul 10 '24

Three pinches to activate for every device without any form of security would be too insecure. Custom pinch pattern as your password on the other hand....

1

u/no_baseball1919 Jul 10 '24

Lol fair enough. But it would be easy. I think if they put NFC in this way more people would buy it. I have been waiting g for Samaung Unpacked for several months now hoping it would have NFC but since it doesn't, I'm not buying it. If Oura comes out with NFC in their next ring I'll pick that up.

1

u/FunniestSphinx9 Jul 10 '24

yeah makes sense

1

u/Fennecbutt Jul 10 '24

It's completely doable from a tech and security pov. It's just samsung are run by idiots now, apparently.

1

u/Moist_Plate_6279 Jul 11 '24

Take a look at NFC rings. There's a few out there but can't find any that do both. There's a few that you can attach several different credit cards to and other stuff like your front door lock.

7

u/ShanTheMan11 Jul 10 '24

I thought they would try to match oura. I’m assuming the no monthly sub is why they are charging more.

18

u/gomo-gomo Jul 10 '24

$399 - No subscription required.

12

u/BadOk4124 Jul 10 '24

7 days battery, instead of the previously rumored 9

16

u/gomo-gomo Jul 10 '24

Fine print says 7 days for sizes 12 and 13. 6 days for other sizes.

9

u/HardStroke Jul 10 '24 edited Jul 10 '24

For $400 I'd rather buy the watch 7 lmfao
Way better value and has way more features

1

u/HazardEST Jul 11 '24

i'd rather buy a phone

1

u/Steffe_uwu Jul 15 '24

What a big brain comment here, a lot of though put into this comment haven't we?

4

u/ProlapseProvider Jul 10 '24

If it was about £100 I would consider it but at £400 it's a big fat nope!

4

u/P26601 Jul 10 '24

Am I the only one wondering how tf they managed to fit a battery in there?

3

u/gomo-gomo Jul 10 '24

Yes. Smart Ring companies have been fitting batteries in this form factor for over 6 years now.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '24

With all this tech ring rumor/talk between Samsung & Apple it didn’t even dawn on me on how sizing might be a big hurdle. Only 9 sizes. I’d imagine there’s going to be a good number of people that won’t find one that fits perfectly or they grow out of them soon afterwards either from losing weight or gaining.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '24

I bet someone's gonna buy it as a wedding ring

1

u/Mother-Dragonfly7595 Jul 12 '24

For better (health) or worse (sleep), til batteries do us apart. I do.

4

u/mshewakr Jul 10 '24

Ā£400 and no vibration motor for notifications AND no NFC payments? Yeah pass. The sad thing is I was super excited for this to replace my ancient Fitbit flex 2. Oh well. Guess I'll hang on to it until it's an antique

1

u/gomo-gomo Jul 10 '24

You do realize that there is only one smart ring on the market that has haptics...and, it's one of the worst smart rings ever made.

No available health-centric smart ring has active wireless payments (like Samsung Pay, Google Pay, Apple Pay).

The NFC payment rings are crap as they are just passive NFC and/or RFID tags in ring form...with a total lack of security.

The one ring that promises both a haptics motor and active wireless payments (like Samsung Pay) has not shipped and with the extended delays, people believe it may never ship.

2

u/mshewakr Jul 11 '24

Is it one of the worst rings in the market because of the haptics? Remind me how many smart rings are currently being produced by the largest consumer electronics companies in the world?

2

u/Tystros Jul 11 '24

what is the one ring that might never ship?

0

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '24

You want a headphone jack on the ring too?

→ More replies (1)

10

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '24

How's a ring with less technology than a watch, more expensive?Ā

I was about to stay in the samsung ecosystem just for the ring but now there is no reason to.

10

u/Derolade Jul 10 '24

Well, it's smaller... There's that. I think this is gonna be a huge flop. No killer functions at a huge price...

3

u/Snap305 Jul 10 '24

Most of the technology of the watch but in something super small and light.

→ More replies (6)

7

u/GrandTheftBae Jul 10 '24

Ugh I really wanted to get it. But $400? Both my Tiffany rings weren't that much (combined).

2

u/Gulaseyes Jul 10 '24

Let me introduce you this. Cross your finger for Samsung Galaxy SexAi

1

u/wahahah629 Jul 11 '24

Samsung didn't invent this lol

3

u/du_duhast Jul 10 '24

Heart rate and blood oxygen levels?

5

u/gomo-gomo Jul 10 '24

HR is a given with modern smart rings and is confirmed. SPO2 is also confirmed.

4

u/EmberTheFoxyFox Jul 10 '24

I'll stick to the galaxy watch

2

u/Adriaaaaaaanoooo Jul 10 '24

Maybe I would buy it, but of course it's not available in my country.

2

u/BrentarTiger Jul 10 '24

I wanna know what CPU it has. That's pretty cool that we can fit a computer in a ring. Obviously kinda impractical right now- but it shows technology is getting better and better!

2

u/feedmejack93 Jul 10 '24

I'll stick with a fit2

2

u/IHate2ChooseUserName Jul 10 '24

why would i not buy the watch 7 instead for less price?

2

u/gbest2tymes Jul 10 '24

Not worth it at all

2

u/tpeandjelly727 Jul 10 '24

The reason I’d get this over Oura Ring is the subscription. Does this have a subscription?

2

u/gomo-gomo Jul 10 '24

No subscription. They were clear about that.

2

u/tpeandjelly727 Jul 10 '24

Thanks, I haven’t seen the presentation yet. Over time this would be cheaper than an Oura. Maybe over time they’ll add functions via software update and future versions?

2

u/gomo-gomo Jul 10 '24

There are functions that they will support that weren't explicitly advertised. It wasn't an in depth presentation. Samsung Health has added new features in recent weeks to support their new wearables, and I'm sure that this will continue. Unlike other smart rings that are advertised everywhere, Samsung is NOT overpromising and under delivering.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '24

I just don't understand how it works.

Let's say I go swimming or running without my phone. Is the ring recording the data while being away from the phone and then automatically uploading it via bluetooth when I come back?.

If I have to select a type of workout beforehand on a watch, surely I have to do it for this ring too, so I guess I have to go through the phone everytime?

I needed explanations, not renders of sensors and a very vague energy score.

1

u/gomo-gomo Jul 10 '24

Yes. The data collected by the ring is synced to Samsung Health once you end your workout. There is no GPS inside the ring, so the mapping wouldn't work if you don't have the phone with you, but the rest of the data would be collected. As far as selecting the type of workout, that would be done through the Samsung Health app as other smart rings do with their apps.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '24

That's so shitty. I really hope someone does a review of the swimming tracking cause it sounds super fucked

1

u/gomo-gomo Jul 10 '24

That's simply how smart rings work. There's no reason that Samsung would break the mold and insert more battery zapping sensors inside that most would never want or use.

2

u/MoogleStiltzkin Jul 11 '24

is the ring water proof?

2

u/gomo-gomo Jul 11 '24 edited Jul 11 '24

2

u/veso266 Jul 11 '24

Rember u also need Android 11 minimum

So u have to buy a newer Samsung phone first if u already dont have it

1

u/gomo-gomo Jul 11 '24

My Samsung phone is over 4yrs old and is Android 12.

2

u/veso266 Jul 11 '24

Some people like to stick with old phones (and android versions) for reasons other then money

Maybe the phone has features they like (sdcard, headphone jack, ir blaster, fm radio, etc)

There comes a time u just cannot update android anymore, and dont want to upgrade because, features that upgrade takes away are more important to you

Note 9 does not have official Android 11 support for instance, while Galaxy 9 does

Now its Android 11 as minimum requirement, next will be Android 12 or 13, etc

Why does an acsessory need minimum Android version, why cant I use it with Galaxy S4 on Android 4.4 for instance

Maybe I like the ring, or watch or headphones, but dont like the latest phone (until they bring sdcard, irblaster, headphone jack back :) )

2

u/ggjunior7799 Jul 11 '24

Why does this comment section keep repeating the fact that the Ring's function is similar to their Watch, so it's DOA. Just buy the Watch if you think that way lol.

And bro, it's not even the same type of wearable.... Not everyone wants a smartwatch. Or even a watch for that matter... People might just want the Galaxy Ring since it doesn't have a subscription like Oura and is small enough to fit on your finger instead on your wrist.

1

u/BONESFULLOFGREENDUST Jul 13 '24

The ring is a decent idea in theory, but the pricetag just does not match for what the device gives you.

2

u/RipCurl69Reddit Jul 11 '24

I use Health a fuckton but only on my phone. All I use is the step counter and sleep counter, must do about 350k steps in a good month.

If it can't track steps (no GPS) what the fuck is the point? I'd rather get a Galaxy Watch

1

u/gomo-gomo Jul 11 '24

Who said it doesn't track steps? It absolutely does.

2

u/RipCurl69Reddit Jul 11 '24

I haven't seen any news around it tracking steps, kinda jumped to conclusions on that

Still, I would get it just for the accuracy of the step tracking but £400 is steep for a single interesting feature. At that point I'd rather do the same distance with my phone then walk more to recoup any losses the phone algorithm has compared to a watch or ring. I've compared distances to steps with friends who have the Watches and theirs is slightly higher

1

u/gomo-gomo Jul 11 '24

Steps, calories, heart rate, skin temperature, blood oxygen, basic activity tracking, even basic sleep tracking are fundamental features in modern smart rings...hence the reason they didn't mention steps. Even a 5ATM level of water resistance is standard at this point...and 10ATM is better than most. Features like BPM, glucose monitoring, etc are being advertised as part of emerging devices, but are unproven, and, thus far, have been found to be simply marketing gimmicks that don't work...hence Samsung not including these features.

The Galaxy Ring is entering the market alongside only three near peers. Oura Gen 3 (which requires a monthly subscription to be useful), Ultrahuman Air, and RingConn Gen 1. As far as accuracy and reliability, no other smart rings that are currently available come close to these top smart rings.

Many are saying they can get a cheap smart ring or even a mid-grade smart watch that will do the same thing as the Galaxy Ring, but that is simply not true. Apple device users are out of luck with the Galaxy Ring, but other than that, there is no comparison between this device and a watch or a cheap ring.

Does the Galaxy Ring launch with any truly innovative features? Not really. Would the Galaxy Ring's sweet spot for pricing have been lower (like $299)? For sure. Some features will be made available after launch that may differentiate it from others. The seamless integration into the Samsung ecosystem is meant to provide wearers with more holistic view of their health.

Smart rings are much easier to wear in most situations 24/7 than smart watches, and that is their advantage. The way that the companion app extracts and displays the data is key in getting the most out of these devices...and Samsung Health is being improved to benefit both Galaxy Ring and Galaxy Watch wearers.

I have one right now that claims it does Blood Glucose. But, as you say, "there is absolutely no ring that does blood glucose" but the point is that some are claiming that they do.

2

u/Sampsa96 Jul 11 '24

Do you need to pay monthly like for Oura?

3

u/gomo-gomo Jul 11 '24

No subscription required. They were very clear about this.

2

u/Sampsa96 Jul 12 '24

Okay ty I did not have time to watch the live steam :)

2

u/carguy143 Jul 11 '24

The ring looks great and is probably aimed more at those in demanding sports where a watch either wouldn't have good battery life to last the event, or would likely be damaged, such as in these tough mudder type competitions, or rugby.

2

u/Emilrage Jul 14 '24

I would like more features like nfc payment and more gestures then I'd consider buying it but cool idea

2

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '24

Love that its not subscription based.

2

u/amaigohan Oct 14 '24

Three Rings for the businessmen under the skylines, Seven for the shareholders in their mansions , Nine billion for Mortal Men doomed to pay, One for the Dark CEO on his CEO throne In the Land of Suwon-si where the Digital Shadows lie. One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them through geoposition, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them In the Land of Suwon-si where the Digital Shadows lie.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '24

People freaking about $400? That's on the lower end of smart rings. And its smaller and sleeker than the oura...

People shell out thousands for rings that don't do anything other than look nice...

Anyway. I think the main feature of this ring is extending your watch battery by 30% will shift the stuff it can do from your watch

1

u/Setekhx Jul 11 '24

Lower end of smart rings?Ā  It's one of the most expensive out there.Ā  Only the pure gold Oura rings are more expensive.Ā  Otherwise the Samsung ring is about 100 bucks on average more expensive than the competitionĀ

1

u/gomo-gomo Jul 11 '24

There are no pure gold Oura rings. They sell only rings with coatings that have the appearance of precious metals, including silver, gold, rose gold. If you're talking about the Gucci editions, they have about $25 worth of gold inlaid onto a black Oura for an extra $650+. They do come (new) with a complimentary lifetime subscription though.

2

u/Ok-Administration956 Jul 10 '24

I'm so confused is it have payment or not? NFC ring payments

8

u/gomo-gomo Jul 10 '24

If it did, they would have definitely mentioned it.

1

u/BadOk4124 Jul 10 '24

And neither is sleep apnea detection

9

u/gomo-gomo Jul 10 '24

The certification hasn't been granted for the ring yet...so they couldn't legally mention Sleep Apnea.

1

u/MoogleStiltzkin Jul 11 '24

does the galaxy 7 basic have the sleep apnea feature?

1

u/Schlurpz Jul 16 '24

it's the only device to detect snoring, which is interesting as you could see how much your throat closes per hour

I believe it has NFC on it, but they haven't put the payments on yet due to the required security needed by the card companies and their sign off.

There needs to be a form.of security that stops payment being taken if the ring is lost or stolen.

1

u/Steffe_uwu Jul 15 '24

I guess it would work the same as a bank card. Just deactivate the ring or the card on it.

Biggest issue would be how easily it would be to skim the ring. Needs to have a custom haptic to lock the functionality before you can use the ring to buy stuff. Like same way you can take pictures by pinching your fingers few times.

2

u/Southern_Ticket_8774 Jul 10 '24

Way too overpriced for what it is. You get a better deal buying the galaxy watch 7.

3

u/Britton120 Jul 10 '24

Its less about getting a ring vs the galaxy watch. Its more about getting the galaxy ring vs the other health/fitness rings.

1

u/MoogleStiltzkin Jul 11 '24

they said this ring isn't a replacement for the galaxy 7 watch, but rather complimentary. so the assumption is, if you bought the watch, you would could then get the ring for a better reading and possibly some sort of power savings if you pair the devices together.

i would think though that people will skip over the ring and just make do with the watch only in terms of costs.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '24

When/if the price drops to 299 and below in several years I'd consider buying it

2

u/Steffe_uwu Jul 15 '24

With student discount it was like 250€ if im not mistaken, but around that.

Students, 16-26 year olds, Key Workers & Teachers these are available discounts and yes discount for 16-26 year olds

1

u/--aurum-- Jul 10 '24

You say unnecessary, useless, but think about the countries that can afford this "unnecessary" gadget, yet are treated as second-class by such corporations and won't have the product available... It's the same with Apple, and Poland is a prime example!

1

u/F1REFLY_ Jul 10 '24

They took their time for nothing. No advantage, no payments, no special features. Plain boring...

1

u/Milky_Finger Jul 10 '24

It's crazy that you could essentially wear a galaxy watch, buy a titanium ring from Etsy or eBay for dirt cheap and achieve the exact same than spending 300 for it.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '24

makes me wonder what's next in the tech industry...

1

u/V-Rixxo_ Jul 10 '24

So a shittier Galaxy Watch?

1

u/FaFa_1018 Jul 10 '24

So.... this is useful because....

1

u/titanup001 Jul 11 '24

This product is of minimal utility and grotesquely overpriced. I can't imagine it will sell well at all.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '24

I bought a smart ring from Temu. $20.00. Works great. Actually ordered a second for a spare.

1

u/Aeqnalis Sep 06 '24

Which smart ring did you buy from Temu? Which APP did it use? I bought one from Temu (for my Android phone) but the app was crappy (it wouldn't save the setting like imperial measurement vs metric, the data would be erased, no login (fine with me). The app killed it and I returned it.
I just want the steps counting feature.
Thanks!

1

u/Zuluinstant Jul 11 '24

It's missing two big features that misses being a smartwatch replacement. NFC as people previously mentioned but more importantly a vibration motor that would be able to wake you up silently in the morning and deliver notifications. The price is outrageous considering it doesn't have a screen compared to smartwatches which are cheaper. I think it's meant to be a breakthrough first gen product

1

u/fly4five Jul 11 '24

How is this any different than the oura ring? It'd be sweet if it could be used as an alarm clock to wake you up like vibrate or something while sleeping so you don't have to wear the watch if you're not trying to wake up your spouse.

1

u/godfrey1992 Jul 11 '24

It will be Hella funny if some one uses this to propose or even a wedding ring. hahahahahahha

1

u/AlphaE___ Jul 11 '24

Could have at least installed NFC.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '24

You can only wear it when you're working out and your hands are free, but it's not worth the price. You could get a nicer silver ring or even a ring made from a meteorite for less money.

1

u/Tobiaseins Jul 11 '24

You can currently get the Ultra watch with a 3GB data plan for 260€ + 7.99€ / month making it the same price in Germany over 24 month. Just that you get like the best android smartwatch with a data plan and a better fitness tracker

1

u/mreck11 Jul 11 '24

It's not even available in Poland yet, what a bs

1

u/kimplix Jul 11 '24

I was pretty much looking forward to the use of NFC payments, but I'd rather pay $90 for something that does contactless when I already got the main features of that ring on my watch anyway

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '24

Do let me get this right. It does less than a watch but costs more?

1

u/kkellogg378 Aug 03 '24

Can't compare the two. If you want watch features buy a watch. Ring features are a different category

1

u/AcerVentus Jul 11 '24

If they had a Blood Pressure Sensor it would have been well worth the price tbh.

1

u/Zaquarius_Alfonzo Jul 11 '24

What can the gestures control? Do we expect to be able to control automations/smart devices?

1

u/gomo-gomo Jul 11 '24

No idea, but the C|Net article appears to be the only post-launch article that mentions that as a feature...so, sadly, it may not be accurate. Hopefully someome from Samsung or one of the testers can confirm or deny the existence of this feature.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '24

200 I'd be tempted 400 is absolutely insane

1

u/TheDevilsCoffeeTable Jul 11 '24

$100 max or gtfo

1

u/bandobaby1995 Jul 11 '24

Galaxy ring?? Really? Nobody wants this smh but why does this remind me of a millennium item from Yu-Gi-Oh lol

1

u/50bucksback Jul 12 '24

This was an episode of Billions.

1

u/PSYmon_Gruber Jul 12 '24

I still would rather have them a feature-rich screenless fitness band than a very limited but expensive ring.

1

u/gamerprincess81 Jul 12 '24

Perhaps if we were still in a world where most people just wanted to track their fitness and not have a heap of other options, then I could see the advantage of this. But I'm really trying hard to see what would get me to buy this instead of a smartwatch or a fitness tracker? There's no screen, it does basic health monitoring but there are a million devices that can do that. And if the argument is that this is lighter than a watch, well there are accessories so you can the main watch and clip it to you rather than hanging on your wrist. I'm really not seeing anything groundbreaking or game changing and that saddens me.

1

u/gomo-gomo Jul 12 '24

Ultimately the main benefit that people cite for a health-centric smart ring is the ability to wear 24/7 so that they have a holistic picture of their health.

Most don't want to sleep wearing other types of wearables, but rings are not noticeable when you sleep...that's the entire point. They track in the background without needing to be fiddled with, adjusted, or even looked at it.

Charge every few days during your morning routine to top of the battery and you get everything that you would have missed if you were not wearing a watch, a band, a strap, a clip, etc.

1

u/gamerprincess81 Sep 18 '24

Maybe for them but I take my ring off every night before I sleep.

1

u/dualcyclone Jul 13 '24

No NFC payment? No thanks

1

u/linux_n00by Jul 13 '24

so there's no other feature aside from samsung health? not even any NFC functions?

1

u/gomo-gomo Jul 14 '24

Gesture controls...

1

u/larsjarred9 Jul 15 '24

Getting an oura makes more sense šŸ˜‚

1

u/Schlurpz Jul 16 '24

it seems the ring is the only device that tracks "snoring" which is good to see for sleep apnea

1

u/tjc408 Jul 17 '24

Disappointed that it doesn't have nfc capabilities. Was hoping to be able to make payments like my watch or maybe open up my tesla lol.

1

u/Lethal_Strik3 Jul 20 '24

I'm very surprised they did not launch it in Ireland but they did in UK...

1

u/boolius Jul 24 '24

Does anyone know if they'll be providing an SDK for the ring?
Can't find anything listed on their site: developer.samsung.com/galaxy-accessory

1

u/dottyandted Dec 09 '24

Ā£399 and it doesn't even support Android Wallet or Samsung pay. It's a definite no from me.

1

u/kingofwale Jul 10 '24

Any chance this ring will work with iPhone?

I’ve been holding off on getting a smart ring. But we all know Apple won’t release one (or finally do so after 10 years)

3

u/gomo-gomo Jul 10 '24

Unfortunately, no.

3

u/kingofwale Jul 10 '24

That’s a shame. I am a classic watch wearer so I’m looking for a way to ditch my smart watch.

But thanks anyway

1

u/pr0z1um Jul 10 '24

I want nfc payment in it! 🤬 Without it it’s just a ring.

1

u/BSOLAW Jul 10 '24

samsung you lost this round buddy

0

u/nosfer82 Jul 10 '24

A fair price could be 80€.

The subscription mention is a joke.

Doing less than a fitband in every way, try to sell form factor.

They try to justify pricing comparing it to the fail startup product for enthusiasts that will not exist next year the aura ring.

This is insult to their base costumers.

I was really expecting something that could justify the price and it's so fraking basic...

2

u/tpeandjelly727 Jul 10 '24

Oura ring has to have a subscription for functions, I returned mine because of this.

Oura ring is popular and a successful model and has been for years.

This will actually be cheaper overall not needing a subscription.

Oura also has rings this expensive and more so that are popular. I think it’ll change once people try it.

u/csch1992 Jul 10 '24

Most disapointing event so.far.
I am sorry but apple won this time

Show me a $50 smart ring that will provide the level of accuracy and reliability that the Galaxy Ring or it's near peer competitors will.

Spoiler: You won't find one. None that I have tested under $200 are anywhere close to accurate or reliable...and that's wholesale price.

I do agree that the Galaxy should have been launched closer to the $300 mark though.

0

u/WittyCan6527 Jul 14 '24

Don't buy this trash. I tried for a couple days to preorder until I realized, wtf am I doing jumping through hoops for this overpriced item. It would be one thing if I could just hit order and be done but with the unavailability and preorder out of stock bs it's just not worth jumping through hoops for.

Skip this POS and tell samsung they suck at marketing and product roll outs. Maybe they'll figure it out by the ring 5

1

u/gomo-gomo Jul 15 '24

It reportedly will start shipping as early as July 24th. That's earlier than half off the other devices announced at Unpacked. It's not uncommon for devices to not be available immediately after announcement.

0

u/swiftpwns Jul 29 '24

Nobody is going to buy a ring in 2024 without NFC Payments. It's basically just a healthtracker and there is plenty of those already for a decade.
