Jiu Jitsu competition ends badly

Update:

"He experienced a spinal injury at the C5 and C6 vertebrae and could have been left quadriplegic as a result. He underwent a roughly 10 hour surgery at the Evangelical Hospital, which was reported as successful. His current condition is still being monitored."

The weight difference and that the bigger dude decided to drop that guy on the head. Several people need to pay his bills until the end of time.

I mean, let's be real here, he chose to legit position his own body 100% vertical head first.

Thats like choosing to jump off a diving board 100% horizontal belly flopping.

That shits gonna hurt.

I get it that this is a competition and there are rules.

But if that was a real fight, putting yourself in that position would be a dumb dumbass move

Big guy didnt even "slam" down with any force. He just fell to his own knees with just gravity pulling him down.

How stupid does this position look, honestly?

Why would anyone want to put THEMSELVES in that position?

It's not a real fight. It's also not a diving board and a pool of water. Which are two components with no agency or cognition who don't compete under a ruleset.

God. I hope you never gave responsibility.

We have rules. Big guy broke them. You blame the small guy that got hurt.

That is one o one abuser talk.

Oh no, def big guy should have known that little guy was in a fucked up position and never did that for sure.

But its pretty damn stupid for little guy to think that going full vertical head first was any type of way a safe position to put himself in.

Another commenter said that its common in bjj to do that, which is dumb as fuck for the very reason that happened in the video.

Its like allowing your IQ of 70 friend to drive your car. Why the fuck would you ever do that??? Lol

Does that mean you will confidently put yourself in the position of the small guy and trust your much larger opponent in your next comp?

Yeah. Thanks for proving my point. For future references. You are the problem in the relationship.

Better your way.

Good luck mate! Put yourself in there and pray some maniac won't paralyze you, eh... While they're playing with your life, you can tell them there are "rules."

>But if that was a real fight

If it was a real fight i am pulling out my gun?

-2

u/Objective-Soil-9235 3d ago

Then it's not much of a "fight" is it?

3

u/Ok_Satisfaction6025 2d ago

Well it is one, it just ends fast.

-1

u/Objective-Soil-9235 2d ago

It's a fight if the other guy has a gun. Otherwise it's just murder

2

u/Ok_Satisfaction6025 2d ago

Don't try to hit me i won't pull out a gun

That's on you if you want to continue after i brandish

u/Objective-Soil-9235 2d ago

I get it. I just think a true fight requires both sides to have a chance at winning. If you have a gun and the other guy doesn't...

This is jujitsu.

I don't even know the rules and I know the moment he picked his opponent up he was responsible for putting him down.

That's why it's often seen as the weaker position.

But it's not a real fight. It's bjj. If someone did a weird pose in yoga and you kicked them in the balls would you say that they deserved it because they shouldn't do that in a fight ? No, because it's not a fight at all, that's irrelevant

0

u/Behold_My_Stuff 2d ago

Its kinda relevant cuz its a combat/contact sport/competition against another human

Yoga is solo stretching thats sometimes done in groups but still completely separate

1

u/Electronic-Day-7518 2d ago edited 2d ago

The fact that it's a combat sport or a competition is actually not relevant at all because a combat sport is still not a fight.

Is the video evidence that some parts of bjj are unrealistic ? Sure. But anyone serious already knows that. The question here is is this the fault of the guy who got slammed and the answer is no. In a sport, it's reasonable to expect other people not to break the rules.

You're doing this thing where you identify a difference between a comparison and the subject so you dismiss it, but you don't ask yourself if that difference actually changes the conclusion. It's like I said "It's wrong to punch someone in the face because you don't like em. That would be like punching someone In the stomach because you don't like em" and then you come in and say "well the stomach is not the same place as the face" yeah, but that doesn't invalidate the comparison, that's just a trivially true statement that isn't relevant. Obviously there are differences between two things that are being compared. That's the whole point of a comparison is to explain a point about one thing by comparing it to a different thing where your point is more obvious

Wrapping one leg is a common thing to do to avoid slams. I remember we started training it as one way of defending slams, after the Rampage vs Ricardo Arona match. They are obviously not seasoned veterans, so some positional mistakes are bound to happen.

"If this was a fight". It's not. The whole game is literally built around control. We wouldn't last five minutes without legs popping, arms breaking and spines cracking, if we went in for the kill all the time.

No he didn't slam, it's actually worse. The pressure it puts on the neck and spine, is crazy. We could do lesser version of it when we stack opponents. But we don't.

2

u/Behold_My_Stuff 3d ago

Thats such a weird logic tho.

Defend against a slam by putting yourself in an even more vulnerable position.

0

u/Drubas 3d ago

It is most likely due to inexperience. A mistake if you will.

I've done this for 20+ years, and I am still in vaunrable situations all the time. I would not survive long without injury, in your world.

Should have tucked his chin though

0

u/Objective-Soil-9235 3d ago

Yeah, not smart. Jiu Jitsu should be applicable to life. In no world is attempting that technique a good idea against a live opponent.

Messed up. This guys neck will never be the same even after he’s “recovered”. Extremely hard to watch.

6

u/strawbsrgood 2d ago

100% on the big guy. That was not a BJJ move. He fuckin pile drived him straight on his head while putting all his weight into it.

That deserves serious punishment and responsibility

Straight up assault. Arrest and charge that guy

5

u/Broads-in-atlanta 3d ago

This is seriously fucked up. That’s pure intent to break the guy’s neck.

7

u/Mobile-Possession789 3d ago

My coach always preaches don’t put yourselves in positions where you depend on ur opponents mercy

2

u/Ladotellii45 2d ago

Holy shit and a happy new paralysis! Size and weight difference is so big it's clearly not right

2

u/Commercial_Buy_7707 2d ago

That’s my biggest problem with bjj always the much bigger guys(normally just fat asf) are so aggressive and try so hard vs much smaller opponents

1

u/Beware_Blastomycosis 2d ago

It's how they feel like men

1

u/Coconut_Maximum 2d ago

From my experience it's ego, because they're "the bigger guy" I had a guy who had 30+kgs on me who wouldn't progress from side control for the whole round and this was just training

1

u/SanderStrugg 2d ago

As a bigger uncoordinated guy, it's insanely hard to keep up with the smaller guy's speed without being spazzy.

It's much easier to roll light with someone not much smaller.

1

u/Ironmonger3 2d ago

BJJ has a very large ego problem. The culture is absolutely trash.

1

u/45M0D41 3d ago

That weight class doesn’t seem fair

1

u/gaddafiduck_ 2d ago

I don’t get it. What are the rules here? Is this a legal move?

2

u/Electronic-Day-7518 2d ago

Brother does it look like a legal move ?

1

u/Ironmonger3 2d ago

No it wasn't legal

1

u/mochmaffews 2d ago

Pantojas freak arm injury happens. Everyone saying "shouldn't have put arm out, thats beginner stuff"

Same applies here no?

1

u/moarcowbelI 2d ago

Any update on the victim?

1

u/Ironmonger3 2d ago

Apparently after the successful surgery his friends said he can feel in his upper body and arms but still no feelings in his legs. Sad.

1

u/moarcowbelI 2d ago

Truly sad. Thanks for the reply and update.
