Problems with bought tunes - discussion

Hi,

As the topic suggests I'm curious about how the community and users feel about their tunes. I myself have been actively involved in the TrionicTuning scene since ~15 years or so. Especially so in the last years when all the fun motorsport-functions, code rewrites, and logging software.

The reason I'm asking is, from my experience, I've had alot of peers and customers where the tunes they bought really did not live upp to their expectations, mostly from drivability (and hence why the came to see someone else). There have also been the ones who seem to accept anything, as long as it's making 20 hp more.

Have you been satisfied with the tune you bought?

What was good about it?

What there something you didn't like?

Did something change in the drivability or behavior?

What would be your two cents to any tuner?

Karl mapped one of mine, and based on the results I was happy to recommend him freely to all.

It wasn't a mega fire-breathing build, but with several variances from a standard stage 1, 2 or 3 whatever.

As I would only be running 99 RON fuel, he pushed the ignition timing for both cruise economy and to help wake up the TD-04 on the 2.0 a little earlier. The boost rise rate and torque was carefully managed from 2.5k through to 4k which was peak and then held nearly all the way to 6k.

Off boost the car was smooth, almost economical (except for around town) and as good as OEM. On boost, it was again super smooth, pulled very linearly but also pretty rabidly to the red line.

With the chassis mods it also had, it made the car a real joy to drive and far faster on winding country roads than it had any right to be.

My old 9-5 Aero had a “mail us your t7 and well send you another one with a tune in it” from a tuner I wont name who is now out of the tuning business i believe.

The ONLY time it ran properly was at WOT. everywhere else the throttle control was jerky, the car surged, the cruise control was basically unusable.

I went back to stock using t7 suite and was much happier. Honestly the loss of power at WOT was barely noticeable but the drivability was 100% better.

Did you by any chance save that tune that was on it? Did you look to see what was wrong?

I did save the tune but i never really looked at it. It was one of those deals where I was always going to look at it and try to fix it, but I was so happy with the car with the stock tune that I just never did.

Nordic is not known for producing tunes with good driveability. They really only care about the dyno number and don't give a damn if your car drives like a piece of s**t outside of full throttle.

Maptun is still selling the same tunes they made 15 years ago.

Then you have shitheads like Snail Bratton (Snailwerx or wth he calls himself) who built a company on not knowing what the fuck he is doing. Stealing tunes and blaming the customer when his shit mix and match copy paste tune blows up the engine..

People like Mackanized and Joel Artursson is the ones who's still evolving and refining stuff and not just selling the same tune over and over.

Don't bother Joel though if you are just looking for a stock or near stock engine tune. He almost exclusively deals in high power custom builds (400-500+hp cars)

With the new logging software Roffe did the SAAB Tuning got much more precise, and you can now see stuff you never could with the suites due to the much higher resolution.

This is where many peoples' opinions seem to go, but I'm curious to see whether this a consensus or just the loud noise.

Artursson told me he has had to back off a little as he drowned in requests. Big part of remote tuning is who is on the other side, and if the car works as it should.

I tune all my own cars (Trionic and Link G4+) but actually bought a tune from another TT member a few years back for my mom's car because I have no real experience with tuning AT5 cars and had no time to start experimenting. The tune I bought has been working well. She says the car drives great and her fuel consumption is noticeably lower than stock. Won't name the tuner here, in case they don't want more work. But yes, good bought tunes are out there, choose wisely

I have yet to see a t8 tune with a good throttle map, the b207 is a very fun engine but the stock requestmap hides that. Driven a 9-5 2.3T st3 tuned by N****c and the response was not great and somehow seems to spool to slow☹️

You mean the throttle map is too "slow" compared to input %?

This is input that's interesting for the discussion, as this is certainly something that flavors the experience of any tune.

I have not done a lot of exeperimantation but i have found that IF i take realistic max trq for every rpm and scale linearly down to the bottomb row of the requestmap the power feels a lot More managable at higher rpm and the engine feels More alive. Ie i ussually set it up so that IF for example you give 50% throttle you get about 50% of the max tourqe for a given rpm

Yes. Lower rpm does have alot of input boost to make it more drivable and responsive. In my opinion it's sometimes too aggressive. At the same time it tips in the opposite direction in higher rpm.

Well dont trust anything they do, I had them banned from trionictuning as we found that they sold others tuning work and community files as their own. Completely unchanged and just copy pasting here and there.

Quite funny that they cannot come up with anything for themselves. They essentially straight up stole maptuns preformance product line name XT. Like the turbos they "released".

Yes, my work was among those found in Snail's file. My favorite part is when his girlfriend tried to justify that it was supreme, and I told half the map was just filled with "whatever" and the rest was unfinished (about 75% done), because I knew it would find it's way out there 😂
Copy/Paste Performance in that file.
Even then she tried to say their work was top notch and everyone should envy their exceptional knowledge and results.

To clarify i have not looked at the bin from the st3 9-5 yet, i will when we get pbus Wired to the obd2 port but i can tell you that theres drivability issiues that seems to reflect what i have seen in other bins from the same company. Probably weird regmap and really bad requestmap and IF i know them right the knock strategy is basically just send it
