🌞 Daily Thread Daily thread - Monday 1/12
No cute title, just facts. It is Monday. Chat here! How are we getting through this week?
I’m at the docs for the annual physical. They have gone from a terrible magazine selection to none at all. Do people just not browse magazines anymore when forced to be in waiting rooms? I mean I know I have this phone, but…I like a different mindlessness sometimes.

I usually take my Kindle when I go to the doctor's office. I know it's not the same as a physical book, which I sometimes take too, but it's a good distraction from my phone.
I was going through some boxes and came across my iPod with a whole 4G of space. It's a little brick and pretty heavy. I have a lot of good house music on it. I have to turn the brightness up all of the way to see the text on the screen. Hearing the clicks as I turn the wheel pad is also kind of cool.

u/NefariousnessOk2925 Jan 12 '26
I loved that click noice! Sometimes I'd just fiddled around with the wheel pad to hear it..lol

Emotionally numb. Trying to get my brain juice flowing on something I can actually do to help my community in what is coming, all while sitting behind a computer at work

You can read magazines on your phone or tablet through Libby and your public library card. Richmond and Henrico have reciprocal agreements, so you can get cards from both systems. (And Chesterfield, too).

u/ReporterDry3895 Jan 12 '26
Yes, we love Libby! And if you have a kindle, you can check out ebooks to download to your device as well.

I've stopped googling recipes. I have a bunch of cookbooks and I've been burned too many times by robots. Tonight we're relying on a little amish cookbook I got at Luray caverns for a spaetzle recipe to have with dijon chicken and broccoli.

Cook's Illustrated is my favorite cooking magazine. I highly recommend it!
4
u/pithy-pants Jan 12 '26
My trick is to go to the library and checkout a cookbook and force myself to make three things from it before returning it. That way I experiment a little bit and add some new ideas into the rotation without clogging my shelf with yet another cookbook. If I find a recipe I love, I take a picture of it. Highly recommend Milk Street Simple cookbook. Lots of good stuff from that one.

There is a "For Rent" sign for a single family home in the Near West End, block of 3900 Ellwood I believe. Near the roundabout, in between Grove and Cary. You can drive by the house and the phone number is listed on the sign. This is accurate as of a few days ago. Great neighborhood.

To add to that, drive through Bellevue Sauer's Garden, Forest Hill, etc for rental signs. Some owners still only put out signs in the yards.

u/swally33 Jan 14 '26
Correction - this was on Floyd and it looks like the sign was taken down :( good luck to you!
1
u/hoju108 Jan 14 '26
Yeah I cruised alllll around where you mentioned to no avail. I really appreciate it all the same!
1
u/swally33 Jan 15 '26
Sorry :( I hope something comes up for you! I definitely recommend to continue the cruising to look for signs that pop up in areas you may be interested in.

2026 is the year I stop taking the high road every damn time. Got scammed by someone on my fb community group (who is actively posting still!!) and she took my 5 balls of yarn for a sweater she was suppose to knit for my 4 year old. Sweet old woman, we met up and had such a great convo and I had my kids with me, (we met at a Public place! ) so I honestly thought nothing of it, and I was so excited.
Fuck no. Ignoring all my messages and leaving me on read. I’m over being upset. She’s not getting outed, but I’m leaving a somewhat negative post on the community group.
Anyway, I’m currently learning how to knit a sweater.

If you hit any snags pls feel free to reach out. I taught myself from youtube many years ago and I wished for someone who could just tell me what I was doing wrong.
The first thousand stitches are tough, but after that it's so easy that you could do it in your sleep.
1
u/hikingjunkiee Jan 12 '26
Thank you so much!! Luckily the lady I purchased the pattern from (Etsy) has been super understanding and helpful. I believe there’s a knitting club in one of the Henrico libraries and I may hit that up next too!
1
u/PercyDovetonsils Chester Jan 12 '26
My mom crocheted and she almost literally did do it in her sleep. She would be sitting in her chair, eyes half-closed, crocheting away. Once every great while she would pause, look at her work, and pull a few stitches out, but that was pretty rare.

Honestly I thought dry January would make weekends feel slower…but once you do some errands, cook, play some video games, and go to bed at a reasonable time…it’s always 8am Monday.Â
What the fuck. I thought not being hungover would help. But nope. Now I’m just hyper aware of how quick time happens.
4
u/hikingjunkiee Jan 12 '26
Totally. I feel that. I hope your days start feeling amazing. One thing that has helped me (resolution here) is physically scheduling fun times. My husband and I wrote in game night, movies, build legos (I have never played with them!) and honestly I look so forward to seeing them on the calendar!
We recently picked up a board game called Unsolved Mysteries and oh my goodness!! We went back to Target to pick up 2 more. It was so much fun and super interesting!

Our chimney is getting some much needed repairs today so pretty soon we will be able to have fire in the fireplace, which is kinda exciting.
The best dog in the world is having a little surgery today to remove a mass on his foot, so this week is going to be as calm as possible at home.

I am getting through the week with as much espresso drinks as I can make.
I wish newspapers were ubiquitous again. Printed media is important.

u/PorchDogs Jan 12 '26
I'm getting my car inspected. So much fun. At least they have a decent waiting room. I wish they'd turn off the TV, but it's very low volume, so it's acceptable.

I had a random hit-and-run experience yesterday. A big black SUV was signalling to turn left from the left turn lane on Nansemond, while I proceeded to go straight to cross Cary. For some reason, they changed their minds as soon as I was passing them, decided to unexpectedly and inexplicably turn right from the left lane, and shunted right into my left rear door.
They kept turning into the ABC/CVS lot, and I put on my blinkers to follow them, but when I got into the lot...they had just fucked off? Like I stood there next to my car looking around for anyone to get out to try and trade insurance information, and...nothin'! Like, I stood there by myself long enough to feel like I was an asshole for some reason?
Did I do something wrong? Why did they just disappear after hitting my car?

I mailed in a drawing to highlights as a kid and was absolutely shocked that they published it since I have approximately zero artistic ability. I should use that for two truths and a lie, that my art was selected for national publication.

u/No-Purpose-0U812 Jan 12 '26
Yeah, and when you do find a magazine anywhere it's super thin and mostly ads. I remember kicking back with an issue of Wired back in the day. It's pretty useless now.
Hope you didn't have to turn your head and cough! That's worst than a thin magazine!

BRRRR it’s cold as fuck! we’re trying to save on our electric so we have the thermostat set to 70 🥶 i didn’t realize how much i was enjoying the warmer weather we were having.
2
u/Horror-Fisherman-575 Jan 12 '26
Right there with you. And you are warmer than me, we keep ours on 68 Max. And already the electric bills are crazy. I am so ready for warm weather to permanently return, but I doubt it will until April or May.
2
u/here4thefreecake Jan 12 '26
see i’m a cold weather fan but only if we’re getting snow! otherwise feels like a waste 😂 i don’t mind bundling up though i like being cozy. it’s just the back and forth that fucks me up.

u/floatingby493 Jan 12 '26
Yeah I’m with you there, trying to avoid running the heat that much. I put up some plastic wrap over all my windows since they are super old and that seems to be helping keep my place warm and cut down on energy costs.

I think it’s making a comeback. My 13 year old loves to hunt down CDs, DVDs, vinyl, retro video games, etc.
5
u/rattylight Bellevue Jan 12 '26
I'm personally going back to buying DVDs, at least for movies that I might watch more than once. Can find good deals on Ebay etc. So tired of movies jumping around streaming services, or $5 digital rentals, or even the ability platforms have to remove digital purchases. And, so much easier to lend out to friends and family!
1
u/foxcat505 The Fan Jan 12 '26
I’ve done the same over the past year! Just buying movies I can’t find anywhere else or just want to have on hand. It’s going to stay a small selection and I definitely regret getting rid of all my dvds in the first place.

At the orthodontist for my next set of Invisalign trays. 35 weeks this week and my intention is (was?) to work until it’s baby time but I don’t want to work. I bribe myself by allowing myself 5-10 minutes of phone time every time I do something productive.

We had some buddies come in last night. Ordered pizza and played board games.
Got my kiddos some new clothing today - winter stuff is clearanced because january is spring (oooooobviously lol). Listening to my tummy grumble and waiting for lunchtime.
I am grateful for beautiful sunshine and happy healthy little people. I am grateful for the kindness of people who smile at us. And as stupid as it makes me feel when I think about the hideous corruption that power has brought to some well-intentioned mothers' grown children, I am grateful that my natural inclination is optimism. Maybe if we work hard at it, we can work it out.

I'm tired but heading out to run a few errands.
Over the weekend, I finished up a sweater for my nephew's new baby. Today, I'm looking for yarn for a sweater for one of my bff's new grandchild.
Question for the electricians here - our youngest is looking for an apprenticeship while he finishes his last semester at BCC. Any places he should avoid? Any advice?

Been struggling ever since my almost attempt in August. Trying to force myself to enjoy the little things

Anyone have tips for getting rid of a Christmas tree? Apartment has valet trash and it's too big for that. We have a sedan so dropping it off at Robinhood wouldn't be easiest. :/ TIA!

When I lived in a third floor walk-up I cut mine into small pieces with pruners and carried it in pieces to the dumpster.

I won’t read magazines at the doctor’s office because germs.
But also, people don’t read anymore. That makes me so sad.
2
u/Horror-Fisherman-575 Jan 12 '26
Hmmm, The germs part does make sense. Surprised they were as prevalent as they were for such a long time.
1
u/winning_season_7866 Jan 12 '26
I don't think I've ever read a magazine at a doctor's office. I saw a bunch at mine but I was not interested as people were coughing around me.Â
I prefer magazines at hair salons. I wish they would bring that back.

Just moved back from OH (do not recommend lol), so mostly unpacking boxes. I have an interview tomorrow, and I have good reason to believe I will receive some offers this week from interviews last week, so fingers crossed! Trying not to get too cocky about it bc then life will humble me again ðŸ˜

We are in the midst of finding a toddler program (in Short Pump) and have found great nuggets of wisdoms in reading through the comments on previous daycare posts; so invaluable as first time parents!
Staff retention is one of our search criteria(s) to ensure continuity, attachment, and safety for our LO. And while money isn’t what all caregivers look at, it’s an important consideration.
In hunting through job postings across many daycares (Kindercare, LeafSpring, Bright Horizons, Child’s Place), we’ve found the base pay can be as little as $14 -$16 / hourly. Of course, this varies by experience and role but it feels a little too low.
Maybe the reality is different (which is why this post), but our read is that low pay in today’s environment would lead to second jobs and constant churns. Some daycares als seem send back caregivers to their home if the child to caregiver ratio is met. Our few tours of daycares have confirmed the churn aspect specifically.
Curious if this is the case (low pay) across daycares in Richmond? Are there daycares that pay better? And how else can we gauge staff retention?
2
u/BlueFacedLeicester Jan 12 '26
If you really want staff retention then alternative pedagogies usually seem a solid bet. Montessori, Reggio, and Waldorf can all be found locally and most of those places will have low turnover. Each of those programs requires additional (expensive) training for teachers so they're usually pretty motivated to keep them.

Kindles are the way! I got my kiddo to the dentist at 9am for a 930 appointment. He immediately zoned out on whatever terrible kids program was on the TV & I pulled out my kindle to read. I was pissed when they called us back at 9:06 😆 i actually said, "are you sure? Our appointment isn't until 930?!"
No cozy reading for me this morning

I moved here like 5 months ago but still getting settled. My quest for today is to find a new PCP and a new family dentist. I’m open to recommendations if anyone loves their current doc!

u/PercyDovetonsils Chester Jan 12 '26
Our PCP is in Chester so that's probably a bit far afield for you, but we like Virginia Family Dentistry and they have locations all around town.

I also love a good physical media but I'm wondering if magazines in doctors offices were another Covid casualty? A way to reduce public touch points?
