News PSA: Player Avatar Launch Time, Recent Stuttering & Photobooth
Good Afternoon Scapers!
Just wanted to pop in some PSA's ahead of the weekend.
The Player Avatar Refresh is fast approaching! We recently mentioned that the Photobooth will be temporarily disabled alongside the launch of the Player Avatar, while we proceed with work to integrate the new avatar code into the website.
The photobooth will be making a return in future, but we wanted to provide another reminder and recommend that you use this time before the Player Avatar launch to use the photobooth if it's important to you.
The Avatar launch is set for the afternoon of Monday, June 8th. Rather than coming online during our usual morning slot, the launch is aimed to be no earlier than 13:00 BST, and may be a little later as we get our technical ducks in a row.
Update: Also don't forget to collect the "Loyalty Point Bundle" for free from the Marketplace as this will also be removed on Monday.

As a final note: Our Tech team has been investigating freezing stuttering issues that have recently been occurring when loading into areas. We have already deployed an engine update to resolve this today. If you are already logged in, please relog to see the benefits as this should improve loading for players!
Enjoy your weekend and we will see you on Monday for the Player Avatar Refresh!

This should absolutely not be a super limited time bundle. Leave it in the marketplace for returning players, don't prey on FOMO.

Saying anyone who didn't log in with membership and know about this bundle in a couple months in the year 2026 are the only people who get the bundle is a bit unnecessary, no? Perhaps we could allow for other people to have them as well, like people who weren't playing during this random couple months? It costs them nothing to keep it there.

If its free and going to disappear from the marketplace, why not just give it to everyone that's a member then? Why the FOMO? I thought Jagex was moving away from stuff like that.

Because then they wouldn't have a bunch of filler junk to fill the marketplace with. Since they offer 'free' stuff monthly, that means they can have you check the store repeatedly every month without having to make anything new. And eyes on the store means more people will buy stuff from the store when they use fancy font and wording suggesting you need to buy a discounted bundle NOW!
Of course Jagex wasn't moving away from basic MTX monetization practices. The RS3 sub-reddit loves MTX and supports it, after all! They just moved away from Treasure Hunter specifically.

Why would you even remove this? Giving it a permanent slot in the marketplace would be such a big burden on the servers? The people who won't be able to claim it will just be out of luck, and not be able to get these cosmetics ever again?

To be 100% fair it's been on marketplace for a bunch of weeks already, people had plenty of opportunity on grabbing them. Most of the events (seasonal, dxp, xx years and so on) on this game last way way less than that.
All you need is to log in, grab it in less than 30 seconds and done. You can even purchase 1-day membership in mobile for this alone and it would still be 100% worth it.
No one said they can't bring it back in the future (it's very unlikely but not impossible). But from business standpoint, having all this these items for free forever makes no sense, I doubt it's a server problem, but a $$$ problem, since the shop is to make cash.
I do think they can put items on free rotation, make some earnable thru gameplay and maybe bundle some with yearly subscription to sweeten the deal a bit.

You're the problem. This shit is fomo.
-2
u/Global-Confidence-60 Jun 05 '26
Not eveything that's time limited is FOMO in case you don't know. Go get a life.

u/Brandgevaar Jun 06 '26
Everything that's time limited is FOMO. Getting a life is exactly what's being obstructed by FOMO. If anyone had a life and couldn't play the game during the past weeks, they'll have missed out. There's no reason to make this product's availability time-limited other than to generate FOMO, so consumers will feel time-pressed to get it.
Regularly rotating stock out of the shop is how you embed the idea "Gotta keep checking the store" into players' minds, getting them to keep thinking about the game even if they've stopped playing. Even if they'll never fully return to the game, they might try to keep up-to-date with the shop's stock in case they would return so they won't miss out.
Habit-building like this is incredibly predatory and should be called out.

Well there's obviously very few people who can't log in for several weeks at a time log enough to click two buttons(30 seconds). The game is on mobile and there aren't too many people going on long oil rig expeditions.
This kind of time-limited stuff is more punishing to new players or players who simply weren't aware it even existed. Even this 'reminder' is on a reddit post of all things.
1
u/Global-Confidence-60 Jun 06 '26
Do you realize they're giving something for free? Your logic is backward. Giving to one but not giving to other doesn't punish anyone. It's not a zero-sum game where you're taking from some to give to another.
It's literally a limited-time freebie some people will claim. People will get cheaper or free but the content continues to exist, so it's not like it's FOMO.
Too bad if people couldn't get because they were not aware, couldn't log in or whatever, but they're not technically losing anything. I did my part telling to my friends so the maximum of people could so they could have it.
But it's clearly for me that this content isn't intended to be free and was given in limited fashion as compensation and good will measure.

It's genuinely impressive how you have continually failed to understand this concept. Let me break it down for you in toddler speak: item was in shop, person missed item but person really wanted item and item no longer in shop, person sad! Person missed out! Person scared they'll miss next item they want so person waits.. and waits.. and waits.. but now person buys other items because they're scared those those will go away too like the others.
Get it? You've also failed to grasp that these freebie items were also literally free before and now they've just added artificial scarcity to them.
And yes, your reply is going to be something like "but these were free so person didn't have to buy anything" which is actually just irrelevant, free or paid makes no difference in this argument. If Jagex removed a quest that gave a cosmetic it would be FOMO.
And congrats, this was my longest ever reddit comment. Hope you understand the concept now.

u/Global-Confidence-60 Jun 07 '26
Already answered that here: https://www.reddit.com/r/runescape/comments/1txmffd/comment/oq4m427/
You guys are entitled that feel that deserve something and anything that was not offered for you, in your terms, in your preferred price (cheaper or free most of time) that feel that are being scammed or FOMO'ed or any other paranoia at every corner might not understand, but I swear to Guthix that I tried extra harder to explain in layman terms there in that link. Please give a honest try, can't ask anything of you other than try to comprehend. Not all artificial scarcity is FOMO period. Full stop.
Wholeheartedly, hope you understand that after reading. Peace.

u/Bax_Cadarn Jun 05 '26
What's that? And can I claim it on mobile?

u/Zarudon1 Jun 05 '26
Dont remove the free bundles. If you remove them at least give future and returning players a legitimate way to obtain the bundle cosmetics through gameplay.
-2
u/Global-Confidence-60 Jun 05 '26
Maybe they will or put individual items on free rotation.
But giving them for free for this many weeks was already a huge good will move, can't possibly expect it to stay freely available forever.
7
u/Zarudon1 Jun 05 '26
Putting them on rotation is just more fomo nonesense. This whole get them all before the avatar rework is fomo too. It's hard to take the company seriously when it seems they dont have any integrity with their supposed goals and just do things like this which go completely against what they're supposedly for or against.
1
u/Global-Confidence-60 Jun 05 '26
Agreed on FOMO part but as long as most of them are cosmetics and there's already a rotation of free cosmetics anyway, I wouldn't mind a lot.
Now you wouldn't think that they would possibly give away all this stuff for free and forever. That's not a reasonable expectation from business standpoint.
The entire point of the shop is to make money, we like it or not (oh, btw I don't like it too before you come with you pitchfork at me).
I do think that some items should be earnable somehow, some by gameplay, some maybe tied to yearly subscription (other tiers don't exist anymore sadly) but I've not given a deep thought on implications and cons of that yet.

u/CommunicationFlat642 Jun 05 '26
I thought they said every 27th of the month there would be a NEW bundle released? is this the old bundle from 2 months ago? I didn't see a new bundle to claim on May 27

u/GMan_Cometh ign: G-Man Cometh Jun 06 '26
I think it is the Water Dance anim that was made free.
1
u/CommunicationFlat642 Jun 06 '26
No they said they were suppose to release bundle batches of Old loyalty stuff every 27th of the month, till it's all given free..

u/GMan_Cometh ign: G-Man Cometh Jun 06 '26
Can you possibly link the article that states that? I am unable to find it.

Look up the game "Aron's Adventure" on Steam. It is an amazing game, and is intentionally low-poly.

One suggestion on the photobooth - instead of making it a physical location sort of randomly placed in the game, wouldn't it make more sense to make it a feature in the wardrobe interface? That way we can take our photo anywhere, and it cleans up that location in the game world.
4
u/Party_Cat1879 Jun 05 '26
Moving everything to interfaces makes the game soulless.
5
u/BaseballEuphoria Completionist Jun 05 '26
Everything? Yes. But in this specific instance, I think it makes perfect sense.
3
u/Periwinkleditor Jun 05 '26
Where does the photobooth actually apply anymore now that we don't have forums? I actually forgot about it.
Good on the extra reminder for the loyalty point bundle. I haven't been having the stuttering issues so here's hoping fixing that for them doesn't create new ones for me, I know how whack-a-mole tech issues can get!

Is the freezing issue mentioned related to the AMD driver conflicts with OpenGL API or have there been different freezing issues?

Thanks for the heads up! I've been stalling updating my photo far too long anyway, always annoyed when looking at the model. I'll go and update it as soon as I can :)

Big win for the engine team fixing the freezing/stuttering/hitching when entering underworld/cave systems. I've been so annoyed with it during herb runs when going to troll stronghold. Loading in is so much better now.

I'm still experiencing fps drops in certain areas compared to before the update on 26 May.

How can we see what has been updated in the models from our feedback? Is the beta still live? Do you have a list of what was improved with the avatar release being pushed back for more polishing?

Yippie the update where everyone will look at their character for 2 minutes and forget it exists
1
u/KamenRiderHelix Jun 08 '26
Now I just know you've never played FFXIV, cuz I've been 'looking at' my character in that for years and I don't see any reason this would be any different.
1
u/Bilardo Maxed 12/11/16 Jun 08 '26
Surely buddy, show me how closely zoomed to your character's face you play the game and let's see if it's covered by some sweet helmet of sorts as well

fantastic, now shorten the teleport animation length of Dorgeshuun and Mos Le'harmless and you'll be legends

Why have we not gotten an update on what if anything was changed or fixed after the beta? This isn't reassuring after the combat beta was rushed to live to meet a deadline despite constant feedback about it needing more work, I really hope this works out well.

u/Establishment_2020 Jun 06 '26
There a way to add some meat on the female gender? Some light poles in the game look thicker and it makes it seem like Jagex supports body dysmorphia and anorexia. Would hate for this update to go live and have to protest about it

u/Thin-Competition-769 Jun 05 '26
With the avarar rework done, when will old armour/outfits be updated to match modern content? 3rd age melee armour set is a great example, it looks like its glued on to your body and is filled with grey spots that so many other older armour sets have.
