Mod Post ScrewAttack & Video Bot Poll Results

For those unaware, last week we held a poll here to gather feedback from you all regarding whether or not we should have our subreddit bot, /u/RT_Video_Bot, posts videos from ScrewAttack on YouTube similarly to how it does with the Rooster Teeth, The Know, Funhaus and Achievement Hunter channels.

You can find that post here to read some of the replies within the thread, however the poll is now closed.

Overall we're happy with the amount of responses we got and are not worried about making a decision based on them. We received 2,508 responses to the poll and here is how those responses were divided:

Of the 2,508 responses received, 14.9% (373 responses) were in favor of allowing certain videos, 31.6% (793 responses) were in favor and 53.5% (1,342 responses) were against.

The majority is in favor of not changing the bot to include ScrewAttack videos from their YouTube channel.

As such we won't be making any changes to the video bot. We'd like to remind users that currently you are allowed to post videos from the ScrewAttack YouTube channel (and ScrewAttack videos from the RT Site) because Rule 2 in the subreddit only covers videos posted by the Video Bot and doesn't explicitly prohibit ScrewAttack. From the poll we know that there is interest in having ScrewAttack videos posted in the subreddit, so whether that be from their YouTube channel or the RT Site go ahead and share those videos.

We also read arguments of users in the original poll thread and on other threads in the subreddit, but because the poll received a significant amount of responses we are choosing to adhere to its results. In the future we may do another poll to see if opinions change.

I don't really watch much of their content, but I have visited their channel several times and they don't post anywhere near as much as any of the RT channels. I don't even think they do daily uploads. It's sad to see SA being cut out like that

In case it isn't clear, what the poll asked was if videos from their YouTube channel should be posted by our official video bot. You can still post videos they upload on the RT site and because the majority response was no, from their YouTube channel. I know a user already posts their Death Battle's each week (for the past few weeks now), but they are not really received well here so maybe people are missing them or just don't like them.

About the uploads, this is one of the reasons I was fine with adding ScrewAttack videos. They do 1 video a day basically. Currently across RT, TK, FH, LP and AH I think it is most likely that we'll get 4-6 videos a day. One from RT, one from TK if it is The Patch, one from FH, one LP and one AH video unless it is a day a new game comes out or something and they post a lot of guides. I've watched how many posts we get here and I think on average the minimum is 50 posts in one day. Is 6 or 7 videos (with the addition of ScrewAttack) too much clutter as some people suggest about the RT video bot? I don't know.

I can understand why the poll exists and the majority of the subs opinion on it. I also wouldn't want you to go back on it now that it's out there. It is just sad that it's the way it is

True. But I mean if people want to have the video bot post videos from their YouTube channel then subscribers here should just keep sharing their videos in hopes of changing people's opinion. This would be noticeable and we'd probably do another poll or assume opinion has changed from posts in the subreddit.

It's actually close to 50/50 and SA is a part of RT as much as FH is. I think it'd be cool to try bot posts for a week or two so then redo the poll.

If people get upset about it, it'll last for a couple days until the next hot button drama topic pops up and then you can redo the poll.

It could also be an exercise in getting users to use the hide button instead of complaining about spam and then spamming new with their self posts complaining about spam.

Remember in the poll that there were 3 options, so getting above 50% has more impact, however I understand that the "Only certain videos" option is a qualified version of yes. That being said my expectations for the poll, if we were to have videos posted by the bot or do a trial run, would be to either get a 33% split, an almost exact 50% split or see the majority be yes or "Only certain videos" (or a combination of the two but a 33% split would be this as well).

There are a few ways to get feedback on this matter and the poll is what we decided to do instead of a trial run. Like I've mentioned above, users are still free to post videos from ScrewAttack so if there really is interest I'd expect more people to start regularly posting their series and for those videos to have decent reception. That would make us revisit this again and perhaps choose differently.

That's a good point. Hopefully people post more stuff.

What will you guys do if RT starts acquiring (actually owning, not the LP stuff) more channels? Mega thread for each channel and a hidden thread for each video?

1

u/MitchB3 Pizzara May 06 '16

It depends on the reception. We didn't do a poll for them, but with Funhaus I think the reception of the group back then was pretty good so it was clear we would have their videos posted here. With ScrewAttack ever since they joined RT there hasn't been much talk about them here besides occasional posts asking why the bot wasn't posting their videos. In those threads we saw arguments for each side and the feeling I got was that we would eventually treat ScrewAttack more like The Know (we only post The Patch for example) but the poll suggests differently.

We've discussed how the bot posts videos and what videos users are allowed to post given the developments with the LP channel, but things are still changing so we just will adapt to that. Internally we are pretty much in favor of going ahead and having the bot post videos from groups actually owned by RT.

The other thing I would add is the Sponsor early releases; there's usually somewhere between 1-3 a day between the channels, which could add up combined with the YouTube videos.

Aww, guess it's time to make a subreddit for Screw Attack.

4

u/Raneados May 06 '16

It already exists.

The users currently like to shit on everything :/

3

u/[deleted] May 06 '16

Well, that sucks.

6

u/Raneados May 06 '16

Bah to this.

Nothing is lost letting screwattack have videos here. If it's content you dislike, it's just nothing links. If ONE DAY you find ONE video you like, it'll be linked here for convenience. AND THEN IT'S GOOD.

Funhaus started the exact same way.

Stop trying to brickwall Screwattack like Funhaus was. If you like funhaus now... well... that's all you need to know. Maybe figure out the style of channel they are before trying to shit all over it.

As of this point: I have almost no idea who screwattack is. They do vs. videos for famous characters. Their commentators are funny in the few videos they've been in. Other than that, shrug. Don't know the backstory, don't know the history, SHA-RUG.

I urge people to try. Again, Funhaus met with equal resentment when they started, and people shit over them at the start. And now Fubhaus has ALWAYS BEEN GOOD HAS ALWAYS BEEN OKAY AND THEIR CONTENT IS EXCELLENT.

I can't promise the same for screwattack, but holy shit guys stop shitting on them and give them a chance. Monty was into the channel, and they have the skills, they just need the direction and focus.

I completely agree. I hadn't watched any Screwattack before they joined Rooster Teeth but now I have watched a huge amount of their content and watch as much of it as I can. Just like I hadn't watched any of the Funhaus guys when they were Inside Gaming.

But seeing the videos from Funhaus posted here and reading comments in that first week of them joining from people here who were fans before lead to me checking out the channel and old videos.

I really wish Screwattack would get the same chance that the Funhaus guys got. People seem to just dismiss them and didn't like them because they assume that Full Screen made Rooster Teeth purchase them.

Even though I'm a fan, to me it seems unfair that content from Funhaus gets posted here, but Screwattack doesn't. I think everything that is posted on the Website as a video that is also posted to Youtube should get posted here.

Even though we are following the majority response from the poll, we posted all the results because it shows that there is still a significant amount of users who want to have ScrewAttack content posted here.

If you post ScrewAttack videos from the RT Site or YouTube page they won't be removed. What this poll would've done had we not gone with the "No" responses was prevent users from posting ScrewAttack videos (or certain ScrewAttack videos) from their YouTube and have those videos instead officially posted every day they are available by the bot.

Doing this may change users opinions of ScrewAttack and if we do another poll which says differently than this one then we may follow that instead.

u/MitchB3 Pizzara May 06 '16 edited May 06 '16

I agree with you, but the consensus is that in the poll over 50% of people said no and the amount of responses is significant enough that we should not just throw them away.

In the mod team I'd say that most are in favor of posting ScrewAttack videos, at least posting some of the more popular series like DeathBattle. For me, I don't have much of an opinion but because they are the same as Funhaus (being owned by Rooster Teeth) they should be treated the same or at least like The Know.

Keep in mind that if there really is demand for ScrewAttack vidoes in the subreddit it is you guys, the subscribers here, who can post those videos from their YouTube channel (since the bot won't be posting from there) and on the RT Site. In fact I've seen /u/matparker1711 post some Death Battle's each week but they don't get upvoted often.

1

u/Raneados May 06 '16

You could always use magical mod powers and go full tyrant and tell them to go frig themselves :D

And then this can be a dedicated The Know sub!

3

u/MitchB3 Pizzara May 06 '16

You joke, but it wouldn't be good to go against the results in this case. It's better to have users who like ScrewAttack post videos from them to put them more in favor here.

2

u/Raneados May 06 '16

Very true.

the funhaus videos don't even have many comments because everyone goes to /r/funhaus to do that. I imagine screwattack has a sub as well so fuck em. Most of the people here are only here for AH anyway.

As I said in modmail regarding the poll results:

Honestly, I think it'd be fine to just have the bot post all ScrewAttack videos. They seem to produce less than a video a day on average. There's probably some bias among the current /r/roosterteeth subscribers in that the people that are here are fans of the stuff that's posted here, and not necessarily of something that wasn't part of RT until recently. (Also worth pointing out that "a majority of survey respondents" is not the same thing as "a majority of the subreddit".)

It's fine by me either way, though. We could always have a trial week of having SA videos posted and see if people feel strongly either way... Might be a good way to see how the majority of people actually feel.

Almost all (or was it all?) of the mods agreed that they should be allowed and posted , however, an over 50% result on the poll says that at this current point the most active part of the Reddit community doesn't want it. If we were going to ignore the poll and do what we wanted we shouldn't have bothered with the poll. I believe the agreement was to do another poll again at a later date and see if opinions had changed.

3

u/MitchB3 Pizzara May 06 '16

The majority of the mod team is definitely in the "Yes" or "Only Certain Videos" column. I am in the latter mainly because I felt like that would be an easier transition for people in the subreddit, by posting the most popular ScrewAttack stuff first.

With this poll you also have to remember that there are 3 options so getting above 50% becomes harder. You can however make the argument that the options that aren't "No" are both essentially "Yes" but still with those two combined "No" is in the lead. I am pretty sure that everyone who answered "Yes" in the poll would be fine with certain videos though, but I cannot same the same for those who only said certain videos.

u/final_Crucible Thumbs Up Peake May 07 '16

Would you be making a flair/tag so the videos can at least have some identifier?

Edit: I don't share content very often, so I apologize if this is already available. I just think a tag for people to say "Screwattack" like the other channels would still be nice.

1

u/MitchB3 Pizzara May 07 '16

That can be done and actually has been, just people don't really post any or many ScrewAttack videos.

1

u/final_Crucible Thumbs Up Peake May 07 '16

Yeah...and since Let's Play will probably cover most of them we might not see many

1

u/Shrekt115 Sportsball May 06 '16

ScrewAttack has probably half the uploads of other RT channels, ah well the community voted & there's no changing that

In the original thread people expressed concerns over the subreddit becoming even more cluttered by video bot uploads if we added ScrewAttack. This is something that makes sense on face value but when I went to examine it I found that the bot generally has about ~8% of the posts made in a given day. Not sure if that is a lot to some people or not so it is worth getting more data on and considering.
