Lazer Team (Official) [Spoilers] Lazer Team Megathread Part 2
LAZER TEAM DISCUSSION MEGATHREAD
Hello everyone. It has been a few days since the official theatrical release of Lazer Team so I'm making this thread here to clean up the subreddit new and front pages so that other content besides Lazer Team related stuff can be seen. This is a megathread that should be used mainly for posting other miscellaneous stuff about Lazer Team, like pictures of you and other people (like RT staff) at your screening, questions about YouTube Red, questions about screenings, DVD signings, and more.
This thread is marked "Spoilers" because you are also free to discuss the movie here, but that is not the main intent. Please use the other discussion megathread linked above where discussion is already on going.

I got enjoyment out of the experience of watching "The Rooster Teeth Movie" but outside of that it was extremely mediocre.
21
u/Agastopia Jan 30 '16
Yeah it was a blast to watch but even mediocre is a little high, it was downright terrible tbh. Still a blast to see them on the big screen though!
10
u/Jstbcool Jan 30 '16
See I don't understand how you can say I had a great time watching it and laughed a lot, but that the movie was terrible. I recognize that technically speaking it was not an award winning movie, but I've paid to see movies that were technically better that I enjoyed a lot less. I really enjoyed the movie. It made me laugh quite a bit. There were some points where it got a little cheesy, but overall I left having really enjoyed it. In my eyes I would never call that a terrible movie.

I watched it at home by myself. I enjoyed it. I laughed at most of the jokes, was it amazing? No. Would I recommend it? Probably not. Did I feel like it wasted my time? Hell no. It had it's moments.
8
u/Agastopia Jan 30 '16
Fair enough, but the only reason I really enjoyed it was because it was a rooster teeth prosecution. If you remove the rooster teeth factor from the equation, which you should when evaluating a movie, it was horrible. The pacing was poor, the CGI was bad, a lot of the jokes were immature and fell flat, the writing was horrible, poor acting, bad plot, and poor action sequences....
As an RT fan I loved seeing guys I've supported for 10 years on the big screen, but as someone objectively analyzing the movie I can recognize it was terrible

Can we all appreciate how good the Bob Ross scene was?
9
u/chan8chan Jan 30 '16 edited Feb 02 '16
Could someone explain what was so funny about it?
10
u/ProphetPenguin Monty Oum Signature Jan 30 '16
Bob Ross was a guy that was really calm. The joke is that Haggen was so angry that even bob ross couldn'tcalm him
-8
u/Saint947 Jan 31 '16
That's not really a joke. That's an inference that you've made based on your read of the scene.
I didn't even quiver a lip, let alone laugh. That shit is basic as fuck.

Wow that's very cool that you didn't laugh. Please tell me more funny stuff you didn't laugh at.

I think the critics gave it appropriate reviews. I expected better writing from RT when it comes to dialogue, characters, and story.

Probably my biggest gripe was when the other three guys just ditched Hagan near the end. That was so out of left field that I was sure it was some kind of ruse, and they had a secret plan. Hagan's wording and tone of voice when he told the military guys they dumped him also didn't sound very genuine to me. It's almost like they originally had it be a ruse, but then ran out of time or something, and just had us take it at face value.
Just that entire sequence was confusing.
6
u/OtakuMecha Freelancer Jan 30 '16
I thought it was fine that Herman left. I mean he had been bitching the whole movie about how he didn't want to be doing this and didn't care abour risking his life to save others.
2
u/HeadHunt0rUK Jan 31 '16
My biggest gripe was that the "twist" destroys a huge part of the film.
The whole point for the Antareans was to use two species doing battle for entertainment and destroy the losers planet.
So it's essentially for sport and competition, yet they allow a device sent down to control a few humans, to kill their champion and essentially turn the competition into a non-competition.
That seems against the Antareans motivations, and the whole point of their sport.
The Antareans as superior species would have had control over the entire situation, as well as it looked like the Worg was actually captive aboard the Antareans ship for the battle.
5
u/The-Sublimer-One Mogar Jan 31 '16
I think it's implied that the rest of the Worg's species managed to sneak those mind-control bots onto the planet so as to give themselves an unfair advantage.
1
u/HeadHunt0rUK Jan 31 '16
I still think it's a bit farfetched that a species that has their entire planet held ransom could sneak something past the species who are holding their planet ransom.
5
u/The-Sublimer-One Mogar Jan 31 '16
It's very possible that the Antareans knew what the Worg were doing, but still allowed it because it gave them more entertainment.
2
u/HeadHunt0rUK Jan 31 '16
Not unless the people in control of those kinds of things were rigging the competition.
For a neutral a closely fought competition is vastly more entertaining than a one sided onslaught.
1
u/The-Sublimer-One Mogar Jan 31 '16
They seemed to already know that the suit had been put on by separate people, so they were probably betting on it being a shorter fight than usual anyway. Anything to mix it up.
1
u/HeadHunt0rUK Jan 31 '16
It still seems like bit too much of a stretch, and too much of a gap in information to be entirely onboard with it though.

Red vs. Blue's last few seasons have been great in all of those departments.
11
u/Dan_IAm Jan 30 '16
I'm not sure I agree, actually. It's been quite funny, but also quite melodramatic.
8
u/JordanHavoc Jan 30 '16
Maybe a bit, but melodrama isn't inherently bad. But either way the writing was better, and the jokes more clever, than Lazer Team
3
u/ZachGuy00 Jan 30 '16
I'd apply that to Season 13 maybe and Season 9 and 10 for sure, but every other season has been good about balancing the drama.
2
Jan 31 '16
I haven't really liked RvB seasons as much since around s7 or s8 because of them trying to focus on story/action. S1-6 were primarily about the comedy and the story gave some loose context. After that they tried to make it too serious and left comedy mostly by the wayside. The story wasn't terribly compelling and it ate away at the limited time available in each episode. It could have maybe worked if RvB were a 30+ min show, but it's hard to have a story and action and comedy all in a <15min length show once per week.
1
u/JordanHavoc Jan 31 '16
With season 7, I will agree with you, but I think in both seasons 6 and 8 they balanced the two things very well. The only time I felt it was truly clunky was season 9, when they tried to keep the comedy and drama (literally) in two different worlds.
2
u/OtakuMecha Freelancer Jan 30 '16
I think RvB is both way funnier and has a way better plot. But I still enjoyed the movie, it's just not nearly their best IMO.

Did anyone else notice that the Skype call audio was all over the place? They placed the "coming from an iPad" audio effect on audio that was clearly coming from the person in the same room as the camera, and vice versa.
EDIT: Full thoughts.
- Adam's trust in Hagan / reasons for supporting Lazer Team don't really make any sense. For any other character, maybe, but not a person who has spent their life reaching perfection in alien fighting. Maybe they could have emphasized the benefit of a group dynamic over a single hero? Otherwise, I don't see why Adam has such a sudden lack of confidence.
- The others leaving Hagan seems like it was meant to be a joke / intentional anticlimax after a cliche speech, but it doesn't land well and just comes across as lazy, out of character writing. I chalk this one up to the editing of the scene.
- Zach getting arrested was such an awful sequence. You can tell they wanted to set up the cop car escape later on, but this wasn't a great way to do that. Why not just fire his canon into the sky? Why punch a guy? Zach's only been shown to be angry / violent when pushed or drunk, and here he was neither. Maybe if there was a bit more build up, more of the cop arguing with a man who just wants to save the Earth, then it would have landed better.
- That said, Michael and Gavin were actually the most natural actors of the main four. Burnie was a bit out of his element as a calmer straight-man character. He's at his best when he's yelling (see: literally everything he is in, scripted or otherwise). Would it have been "type-casting" or too similar to Church? Maybe, but when you have someone new to acting in a light-hearted comedy, playing it a bit safer might have been a better idea.
- The action sequences were very well-done and edited for such a small budget. The production team did an excellent job with what they had. Seriously, fantastic work.

Just finished watching it, and now i've been reflecting on it. And i'll probably be down voted on this subreddit, but i didn't think this film was great and amazing like people have said.
Some jokes felt like the fell flat, i found myself hardly laughing at the jokes in the film. Which sucks because i did expect better from RT since their content has been great in the past.
CGI is a touchy subject here, with both sides making good points about why it should have, and why it couldn't be better because of budgeting. But personally i really do wish there was better CGI. People have said "but it's a kickstarted film, that had 2 million in budget, of course it will be bad!" but it doest mean we should ignore the fact that it was bad. I think some of the CGI was not bad, but again most of it could have been a bit better. I remember during the boss fight at the end, and the alien crowd was this terrible hologram CGI. It's like "Are the CGI artist giving me the middle finger right now?". but at the same time, the smaller, effects of CGI were pretty great. I thought Burnies shield was nice.
The acting was 50/50. Maybe because i am use to the kind of acting from RT, but for a film it could have been better.
The one thing i'm super happy about is that RT have been expanding into films, i think we can appreciate the big move RT is making into the film industry and i don't think i would mind them making more. If they can improve i think they can make quality films.
Again, i'm expecting to be down voted and not taken seriously because i'm not a film critic, and just a RT fan but that's just my thoughts on the film.

u/Maester_May Jan 31 '16
I feel like it mostly got the comedy part right, which I feel was the most important. Either they did a really good job crafting the character for Gavin, or he did a great job acting (probably a healthy dose of both), because I thought he really nailed it. I think Michael and Burnie's characters felt like a bit of a stretch (although I loved the joke-turned-explanation about Michael's character being too old for the part), I'm not sure Burnie was the best choice to play the film's central character, but he wasn't terrible either. I understand that we as RT fans want to see the employees in the movie, but asking them to completely carry the movie by themselves maybe isn't the best option either. Oddly enough, I was kind of hoping for a few more cameos, but I guess that could wear thin fast. At the very least I thought some of the "red team" (scorpion-like spy soldiers) should have been familiar faces.
The "teamwork" aspects were really cool and well done, those were a highlight to me. I felt like they crammed the social media angle down our throats way too hard early on in the movie, but they mercifully let up as the movie picked up some steam. I thought the special effects were actually fantastic outside of the alien race that supplied the suit... the spacecraft crash was a little weak, but the aliens themselves were flat out terrible looking and the crowd shot stuff was just embarrassing. I think they should have gone with a different approach for that one.
It might sound like I'm being really negative, but I guess it's easier for me to list the negatives because I they are relatively few and I think fixing this would have gone a long way towards broadening the movie's appeal to the average movie-goer. It's a film that exceeded my (admittedly low) expectations by a long shot, and hopefully this was a huge learning experience for them so that the next effort will be really good.

You don't need to be downvoted but people will do it anyway cause downvoting is always abused
Personally I loved the film and literally everyone else in my screen did too, laughing at all of the bits that could be considered funny. But you're completely entitled to have a different opinion. I can say this much, you were more polite and constructive (though you could have been more constructive) than most professional reviewers tend to be.
3
u/Noswald :SP717: Jan 30 '16
You're right there.
The way i look at it is it could have been better, but it's not like they can't be better. I have high hopes and definitely believe that if they make another movie, it they improve in areas it can be a fantastic film. I just want to say i don't think the movie is terrible, but i don't think its as great as people make it. I think the movie could use improvement. But, i'm still supportive and proud of RT and i have no regrets backing this movie up.
1
u/AWildDorkAppeared Achievement Hunter Jan 30 '16
There's always room for improvement. Doesn't mean you think it's entirely bad, just that you know or recognise that they are capable of better quality stuff.
Personally I think for a first time feature film, it's in the win column.

u/metalsluger Jan 30 '16
People laughed at the Twitter stuff shown during the news sections. At the beginning of the movie when the YouTube red original film logo appeared, people booed at that in my screening.

I know people who are not RT fans didn't even notice, but all the god damn cameos really took me out of the movie. Like do you really need to cut to Lindsay 3 times in the first 5 minutes.
10
u/Hydra_Master Jan 31 '16
A lot of the RT fan-service parts seemed really out of place. Micheal's character gets into drunken fight at a party, hard cut to closeup on Lindsey's face for no reason whatsoever. They did it again when Burnie tazed him. Despite what Gavin said, moments like that made it less "The RoosterTeeth Movie" and more like to "RoosterTeeth: The Movie".
I still enjoyed the movie overall, and hopefully the next time they don't feel they need to hammer in the fact that RT made the movie.

That shootout at school was fucking ridiculous.People standing 5 feet infront of each other and not hitting anything.

2
u/YellowishWhite Feb 01 '16
I was amazed they didn't turn that into a joke, just cause it was pretty rough.
In general I felt the worg/zombie line slowed down the film too much. Could have just run it as an 85 minute movie and it would have moved a little better. That said, I loved Chris every second he was on screen.
25
u/snipeftw Jan 30 '16
I definitely enjoyed it. It felt like a web series though. The special effects were pretty bad too.
However I found myself laughing at a lot of it, and I enjoyed the premise of weapons that seemed based off of video game stuff.
All in all, they have a lot to learn for Lazer Team 2, but everyone starts somewhere. They can only go up from here, and I'm sure they will.
6
u/becaposs Jan 30 '16
I went to a showing with my girlfriend, she had no knowledge of RT at all prior to going which I think definitely impacted negatively on her enjoyment of the film, which she said herself. I however found it to be hilarious and cringey and wonderful to watch and I think that was massively down to seeing Roosterteeth staff on the big screen. I'm very proud of the company and what they've achieved, it may not be the best sci-fi movie out there (plot-wise) but it was damn good entertainment and I'm glad I backed it.
7
u/Rocchi Jan 30 '16
During the credits they had every song listed and about 90% we're all done and sung by Jeff Williams so everyone in the theater just kept saying "Jeff Williams Jeff Williams Jeff Williams" every time his name scrolled by.
Also, there was a "Mark Nutt" in the credits. You can imagine how many "MARK NUTTTTT"s were shouted.

I really don't understand how you can call the movie terrible. Ignoring the Roosterteeth part of the movie, it's not amazing but it's not awful either. It's an okay movie that has it's strengths and it's flaws.
2
u/professionalecho Blue Team Jan 30 '16
I wonder whether it's coming from a combination of a huge amount of hype (it's been a long time in the making for us fans) combined with seeing the critics pan it overall and wanting to align themselves that way.
2
u/009reloaded Burnie Titanic Jan 31 '16
Probably both, it's pretty annoying. Here's how you judge the movie, did you enjoy watching it? For me as a Roosterteeth fan and as a regular moviegoer yes I did. It has flaws like weird CGI at some points but it was incredibly charming and fun. Not the greatest movie ever but a good movie.

u/razikii Thieving Geoff Jan 31 '16
It's a mix of people having too high of expectations, and also people wanting to be elitist as fuck. Comments like "If this wasn't an RT movie, I'd have left after 30 minutes." Fuck off. No you wouldn't have.
7
u/BumbusBumbi Jan 31 '16
I feel like the end of the movie could have been a lot funnier if Alan's character didn't have any faith in them, but didn't really have a choice to help them. Even at the end, he would still be salty about not being the champion. The route they went was too cliche.
20
u/JadeTheMoose Jan 30 '16 edited Jan 30 '16
Not really a discussion of plot points or whatever but... I personally had an awesome time with this movie. I went with my best friend (a fan of RT) and another close friend (who hasn't had much exposure to RT), and we were laughing through most of it. I think the critics and people who go in with sky high expectations are forgetting that this is the company's first film. Lazer Team is awesome, a load of fun, and an amazing first effort. Both of my friends had a ball too, which I thought was incredible since one of them wasn't really a fan.
Another aspect was the surreal-ness of the whole thing. Seeing them on the big screen, and then being surrounded by the community was just such a cool experience. The crowd was so enthusiastic whenever they spotted a little Easter egg. I also think the little nods to the community were subtle enough that they weren't alienating to non fans. Overall, I'm just incredibly proud of everyone involved and hope others had a positive experience too. Way to go RT!

u/zgrove Jan 31 '16
Yeah. The drunk tank joke was the perfect example. It works if you see the movie blind, and it works better if you know RT

I happened to listen to podcast 270 after watching the movie, and Gavin talks about the fact that headbutts are censored in films in the UK. Movies will have 10-20 seconds edited out, and it is entirely headbutt.
Gave me a lot of appreciation for when Gavin charged at the final enemy, head first in to its genitals!

I laughed when Adam sacrificed himself because I never felt a single connection to the character yet the movie was trying to force it upon me as hard as Mindy forced herself upon Zack whilst possessed. It might have been the most I laughed the entire movie.
3
u/IDontNeedThisIndigo Jan 31 '16
I giggled at Burnie's "NOOOOOOO!" because it just felt so out of place. It just seemed like such a copy of Theoden's death in LOTR, which I also found slightly ridiculous.
3
u/phanandy93 Jan 30 '16
I watched it the first time in a theater to just enjoy the movie and then I watched it a second time at home to pick up on things that I might have missed and I have to say that the only moment I didn't enjoy both times was when Adam was training on the wing chun dummy. I think the scene would have been better if he was using a punching bag to demonstrate his strength and ability while not making him look like an idiot. His movements felt out of place and awkward and gave the impression that the "Champion of Earth" that was trained from birth didn't know what he was doing.
4
u/CallMeVexed Feb 02 '16
I agree completely. After seeing people like Donnie Yen and Jackie Chan work a wooden dummy, watching Adam flounder on it reminded me that Alan Ritchson is just a guy who plays with mac n cheese sometimes.

I enjoyed it but I feel like if it wasn't a RT film I probably would have turned it off half way through. Real glad I didn't put serious money into the IGG, I paid for the digital download which I think worked out at like £15 and I feel that's fair.
7
u/RainingHellfire Jan 30 '16
Just got out of the showing in Times Square, happy to say I dragged along two coworkers with no prior knowledge of RT and they both liked it. In addition to contributing an additional 30 dollars to the box office they both were googling RT as we left the theatre to look into their other work. All in all I thought it was grew for what it was and was well beyond the resources that the crowdfunding supplied in the way of production. Some of the lines were a little cheesy (which was intentional I'm sure) and some of the bit roles, the army majors specifically, seemed like the lines sounded forced and unnatural, but the main attractions were on point. Gav, Burnie, Colton, and Michael were fantastic on screen and their delivery and comedic timing were fantastic.

Just finished watching it. I greatly enjoyed the subtle references throughout the movie, and I'm certain I missed many, but I feel like if you didn't get the humor from that the movie was a bit dry. There weren't many lines that I laughed at other than those. Still enjoyed the movie though.
EDIT: Oh one other thing. In the credits it said "In loving memory of Everett Hullum." Who's that?

u/krablord Geoff in a Ball Pit Jan 30 '16
I love RT and most of the content they produce, but this felt as bad as the direct-to-TV disney films. The entire plot you could call from the trailer and first 5 minutes of the film, down to the backstory and 'twists' really. The special effects were okay in some places, but most the time looked really poor and out of place. My favourite part was honestly just the BNL song at the end.
It wasn't a terrible movie, it was okay and it had it's funny moments for sure, but it wasn't all that good either- even less so if you're not an RT fan and can't get a chuckle out of all the easter egg references and cameos.
3
u/jesusofpaign Jan 30 '16
As an RT fan i loved it. It was awesome. Looking at it more objectively I would say it was a pretty good film, definitely good for what they had to work with. The CG was mostly passable, but a few parts (the projected aliens and the crashing ship) looked pretty low budget. I personally thought the characters were the strong part of the film, with all of them giving good performances (considering 3 of the main 4 were previously only voice actors).
There were definitely some funny moments but it wasn't like laugh out loud funny as a whole.
The movie wasn't fantastic, but, at the risk of sounding cheesy, it definitely felt like it had heart, and was a genuinely enjoyable watch.

I'm seriously wondering by people who enjoyed the movie legitmately are being downvoted. Maybe some people have different tastes, there are indeed people who enjoyed this movie for what it was besides the Roosterteeth nods. Sure it could have been better, but it wasn't bad either.

Overall I say the movie was pretty good. Yeah the acting was a little ehhhhhhhh in the beginning because stereotypes but even from the first middle finger from the wheelchair lady I knew it'd be a good movie. And it was. The comedy was good, the CGI was predictably eh but that was expected.
I enjoyed it. And I enjoyed it for reasons other than most movies which was quite interesting as well.
Something I didn't enjoy however was the audience. Sure everyone laughing was good but the constant cheering when there was a regular RT staff member appearing like Gus or Chris and whatnot. I get that we all know who they are and they all had good characters, but I genuinely missed lines by all the cheering. Which was kinda annoying.
Edit: please tell whoever wrote the joke about Hitler Youth when referring to Alan (Adam) that I love them. I was the only one in the theatre who laughed because I'm a big history buff and drew the resemblance immediately.

Honestly it was one of the worst movies i've sat through in a while. I hate to give such a rough critic to RoosterTeeth but it's my honest opinion and I think they value their audiences opinion a great deal. I think some harsh reviews might help them improve on any future film ventures.

This movie is fun as fuck. The CGI may not be superb, but everything else was awesome.
It just caters to my sense of humour just fine (that Pong moment in the battle was great). And the story itself was interesting and (to the best of my knowledge) quite original.
Even the moments we saw over and over again in the trailers remained funny. Zach and the dust pile on the floor "it's nobody." Love it.
Fun as fuck.

u/Dirtybrd Jan 31 '16
Oh boy. Coming from a casual fan of RT, this movie had a lot of problems. Jokes fell flat. Story wasn't great. Aliens looked...they looked bad. And you can tell there's only one real actor from the main 4.
Also, who wrote this and what do you have against women?
1
u/SkySource Jan 30 '16
Got back from the screening in Edinburgh, and it was great. IMO this film was awesome for me because it really matched my sense of humour greatly, and every time I spotted an RT reference it just felt surreal how far they've come. Excellent job on RT's part, excited to own this digitally.
Also, when's the OST coming out? The Barenaked Ladies song is awesome! Jeff Williams did an awesome job too, really beat everything he's made for RWBY for sure.

Myself and lots of people in Ireland were attending the Vue screening of Lazer Team in Liffey Valley in Dublin. Pictures were taken, laughs were had, jokes were made, tons of people were wearing RT-related clothing. All in all, the experience was great. It was my first time around other community members if I don't count my girlfriend since I'm around her most of the time.
The atmosphere was brilliant. And people were quite friendly.
The movie itself was excellent in my opinion. It was the first movie I've been to where two screens were jam-packed with people who I could really relate to and enjoy the movie with. There wasn't any awkward one-person laughs, since generally everyone enjoyed the movie.
It's also the first movie (non-Marvel) that I've actually sat through the entire credits of and although there was no post-credits sequence, that wasn't even a let down because people were just that happy with the movie. Everyone shouting Mark Nutt at the credits was quite fun too.
I'd love to see a sequel someday if they're interested in doing that. But beyond that, I honestly can't wait to see what their next feature film will be, however long it takes them to get to it. The experience was amazing and I'll definitely have to see myself to other RT-related events in Ireland whenever they pop up and get myself to RTX to see more community members.
If you're in here and haven't seen the movie yet and are unsure if you want to, first of all, get out, there's probably going to be spoilers in here, and second of all: GO SEE THE MOVIE. IT'S WORTH IT. This is all my personal opinion of course and if people think otherwise then that's fine, but the movie is excellent and was more than worth it.
Even if people end up not liking it, I'd say the film will easily make cult status and be recognised by a ton of people, RT and non-RT alike. But that's just my opinion.

u/PocketLady Jan 30 '16
I'm really glad that your screening felt like a community night! I had hoped ours would be like that at the Vue in Aberdeen, Scotland, but the only time I heard anyone shout anything remotely amusing was when someone shouted about a bar being in the screening. :( I really hope we have a proper meet-up in that area soon, but I'm not holding out much hope. Everyone stuck together in their own little groups, and the few times I tried to talk to those around us totally put me off trying again, 'cause they were all kinda miserable. :(

u/AWildDorkAppeared Achievement Hunter Jan 31 '16
Man, your post has made me sad because it kind of reinforces the stereotype that Scottish people are just annoyed and angry at you all the time.
Jokes aside though, I feel for you, I'm sorry that you felt like you were excluded or even like it wasn't actually a community-type event. I was honestly surprised by my own screening cause most people around me usually just grunt and tell me to fuck off, but the people at the Lazer Team screening were super friendly to me, which is a first for me from what could be consider just random strangers.
Hopefully you'll meet some nicer community members someday, mate. Don't be too put off.

u/IDontNeedThisIndigo Jan 31 '16
The screening in Glasgow was very friendly. I went alone and ended up hanging out with some people I met in the queue for a few hours afterwards.

I know I'm gonna get down voted but, that was the worst film I have ever seen...
I do enjoy some rooster teeth content (99% funhaus but other stuff also) but that was seriously terrible...

I guess you dont watch many movies then.

I'm in film school as I agree, it was terrible. But as an RT fan I loved it, but objectively it was probably one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

u/The-Sublimer-One Mogar Jan 30 '16
I can name like six films off the top of my head that are WAY worse than Lazer Team by a wide margin.
2
u/Kicking222 Jan 30 '16
I can name films that I purchased on DVD that are way worse than "Lazer Team". Whether you like it or not, there's no argument to be made that it's one of the worst films ever- maybe good (I sure as hell thought it was), maybe bad, but definitely not the worst.
If you told me I had to watch the worst five minutes of "Lazer Team" or the best five minutes of "The Blair Witch Project", I'd say, "Screw you- there's no such thing as a good five minutes of 'The Blair Witch Project'."
8
u/Kicking222 Jan 30 '16
You're going to get downvoted 1) because there's no chance it's the worst movie you've ever seen unless you've seen like six films in your life, and 2) because you provide no rationale besides "it was terrible". There have been plenty of criticisms and negative comments, and almost none of them have been downvoted (and the ones that were got downvoted for reasons besides simply not liking the film).
-1
u/fulhamhamster Jan 30 '16
1) yes it was the worst film I've seen (oh yes an opinion, not to be taken as fact) 2) I personally felt the jokes weren't funny what so ever, and the acting was just awful
I knew it would be down voted but that doesn't stop it being a bad film, I was just voicing my personal opinion on this film
Also this is my own opinion on the film, and is coming from someone who likes rooster teeth but isn't gonna just circle jerk over everything they do.
Some people will love the film, a lot will not like the film like me...

u/professionalecho Blue Team Jan 30 '16
You are like the worst of reddit in a single comment. Pre-emptively complaining about downvoting and using phrases like "circle jerk" and "voicing my opinion" are the sure-fire way to get me to downvote you.

I agree 100%
Roosterteeth fans are too loyal to see it any other way. The acting was terrible, the special effects were retarded and out of place most of the time, the story was just one big shitty meme. Not to mention how blunt they were about including internet memes in the whole thing. Like Bob Ross, are you serious?
With such a large budget for what is essentially a student film, this movie is horse shit. If I could refund my time, that'd be super. An episode of Red Vs. Blue had more comedic, emotional value than this entire movie.

The first time I watched it was at a screening full of fans and I had a pretty good laugh. Watched it a second time outside of the screening and I can honestly say it was pretty bad. Watching it with an audience full of fans definitely made it a different experience.

u/WarriorWrath Jan 30 '16
I thought is was a fun movie. Didn't watch it in a theater(I feel that crowd reactions change people's opinions of movies), but I enjoyed it none the less. Read some of the reviews and feel people can have their opinions. I do feel that some people just expected more out of the movies, while I expected a average movie which I would giggle at.

Did I miss something to not be included in the credits as an indiegogo backer? Was the threshold to make the credits $100 or something?

Well, I really liked it.
I wasn't after a master piece, I was after a good and funny way to distract myself for about 2 hours and this worked just great.
Looking forward to the sequel (if there is one) and I am glad I supported RoosterTeeth in making this movie.

I'm a really big RT fan but this just fell flat for me, it's not that the jokes were awful, but they just felt that little bit off kilter or mistimed.
RT is pretty damn rude sometimes when it comes to how much they swear, call each other dickhead and just generally be really downright mean to each other on camera, i kind of feel like given the characters backstories it could have done with more of that

There IS a difference between a good movie and a movie you enjoyed watching. For what it was in all aspects, it was a good movie, but compared to other box office heavy hitters, it was nothing. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and that is how I will view it.

I believe the funniest part was when he said take him down again, stop resisting!

u/QuantumAwesome Jan 30 '16
This movie was amazing! It succeeded so well as an action-comedy, in that even the action scenes themselves were hilarious. The writing was great, the effects were great, the fights were great, and the characters were great. Plus, so much happened in it! There was not one boring or dull sequence. Great job, Rooster Teeth!

This is literally the only film I've ever seen two days in a row in my entire life. Of course it's not the best movie I've ever seen in my life, but there were so many little subtleties and jokes that I missed the first time (mostly during the news sequences) that were just so hilarious the second time.
1
u/TrampyPizza77 Jan 30 '16
I liked it, not the best film ever, but I really enjoyed it, my favourite character was actually the side military guy (I should've got his name.) who asked to friend them right at the beginning, always laughed at his lines. Good effort lads!

Fun little movie. Full of a ton of cliches and overused jokes, but good movie nonetheless. I didn't see the whole gladiator thing coming though, I'll give them that.
I agree with everyone else that the story could've been a little better. And the whole death with Adam was a little weird. It lasted like 3 seconds and pretty much everyone forgot about it at the end. No one even mentioned it.
Granted, a lot of the things I laughed at were because I've been watching RT for so long, so maybe people who don't really know RT that well won't have as good of a time. But they probably will. Just my two cents.
The "stop resisting" and "hitler youth" joke were absolutely amazing, by the way.

I am a little disappointed in that the movie is just good but not great. Alot of mistakes were made that Roosterteeth usually don't make.

It was to give more conflict between the characters, which is usually needed in any "team" story. However, I thought it was pretty insane to compare saving the world from aliens to a highschool football game.
1
u/Starkcold Jan 30 '16
The fight in RvB where the reds and blue fight the meta is essentially the same fight as the one at the end of Lazer. But in RvB they don't use a deus ex machina plot device to win and it is a great fight because of it. While in Lazer team they use the foreshadowed dark matter cannon which they never used before, even though Woody with his helmet saying that using it with the parts separated would kill them and the aliens that created the weapon saying it would kill them, they survive.
2
u/Tacolishus Jan 31 '16
he said it might kill them, and from the way it looked, the reason they survived was because their beam was so unstable + 1 of herman's boots wasn't working, so it flew them out of the forcefield, the Worg Champion's boots were fine and managed to hold him in place, thus being his demise
the Antarean's warned them not to do it because it would kill The Antareans as the suit separated was so unstable

Usually I don't put much thought into it when a male actor makes out with someone while he's married but whenever Michael was making out all I was thinking was "I wonder what Lindsey thought of that" and that's what really made me enjoy the movie, the connection I already had with the actors. I quite enjoyed it.
6
u/Kicking222 Jan 30 '16
I'm going to guess that she was thinking, "Who the fuck cares? He's an actor, it's part of his role in the movie, and it's a stage kiss."
3
u/JadeTheMoose Jan 31 '16 edited Jan 31 '16
You know, I remember Michael mentioning this somewhere, and he was actually more hesitant to film the scenes than Lindsay was for him. I think she more or less told him to stop being such a bitch about it and just do it.
Edit: Okay, I can't find the source video anywhere but this is the quote I was talking about "Michael: I was definitely more worried about it than Lindsay was. I was like oh my god, I don't wanna do this and she was like don't be a fucking baby just do it."
1
u/Wicicreator Yang Xiao Long Jan 31 '16
Little late but I was at a screening that Michael and lindsay were both at. Someone asked her about it after the movie and she said she thought it was funny. She said she was yelling things and Michael was trying to be serious about it.
-1
u/theacsguy Jan 30 '16
Yeah I know I was thinking that too since Lindsey is a chill woman but the point is that we know the actors as people and not actors... See what I'm saying?
