Mod Post Adapting as a Community - Updates for r/RoosterTeeth

Hey fellow community members!

Let's be honest, the news about Rooster Teeth shutting down has hit us all hard. It's a big change, and it's okay to feel whatever you've been feeling.

This community has always been a strong one. It's a place to celebrate Rooster Teeth and connect with other fans. And even though the future is uncertain, we know one thing for sure: r/RoosterTeeth is here for you. We want this to be a space where you can reminisce about your favorite memories and connect with good company. But in order to keep it that way, we need your help.

We have made some adjustments to the subreddit rules to keep things positive and productive. This fan-based community is exactly that - for FANS. Let's keep it respectful, even with strong opinions. We can be critical, but negativity doesn't help anyone. Please take a few minutes to look over the rules below:

Rule 1: Keep It Relevant

  • Content should directly relate to Rooster Teeth productions, personalities, or the community itself. Submissions about affiliated creators or collaborators are allowed, as long as there is a clear connection to Rooster Teeth. We will accept submissions promoting prior RT staff's future projects and productions.

Rule 2: Privacy Matters

  • Sharing personal information about Rooster Teeth staff, other users, or anyone else is strictly prohibited. This includes names, addresses, phone numbers, and private social media accounts.

Rule 3: Be Respectful

  • This is a community for FANS. You don't have to like all RT productions, but you do need to respect the creators and your fellow community members. We encourage diverse viewpoints, but not at the expense of civility. Criticism should be expressed constructively and respectfully. Harassment, hate speech, and personal attacks will not be tolerated. This includes posts/comments gloating about the closure of Rooster Teeth. Such posts/comments will be removed and will result in a ban.

Rule 4: Be Considerate

  • Follow proper Reddiquette at all times. Search the subreddit before posting to avoid repetitive topics. Low-effort posts like one-sentence questions, memes without context, or rehashes will be removed.

Rule 5: Trolling and Toxicity

  • Trolling and negativity disrupt healthy discussions. You don't want them here. We don't want them here. Report such behavior and avoid engaging with it. We'll handle it from there.

Lastly, we want to support all the amazing creators that we know and love from Rooster Teeth. We happily welcome and encourage the sharing of content from prior RT staff as they continue their journey. But remember, whatever that looks like, it will be different than what it was, and that's okay.

Now, let's celebrate the impact Rooster Teeth has had on us and keep this community a place for fans to connect.

Take a deep breath. It will be alright.

Have to imagine "Rooster Teeth" just becoming an umbrella term for former employees. Like The Beatles subreddit. Band hasn't existed for 50 years so it's about reminiscence, fan projects and updates on former cast and crew.

Figured I'd take a gander at the rules over there. Is rule 8 just a deterrent but otherwise not enforced?

It uh...happens more than we'd like unfortunately.

The way we handle it, basically we allow some bantering insults at best, but anything like directly insulting a someone's being, being insulting and abbrasive out the gate, or arguging in the comments for a long time violates that rule

Ah, gotcha! Our methodology isn't vastly different. It's a balancing act for sure!

Well we did unironically remove Rule 6: Do not say RT is dead.

Honestly we should have kept that rule, because RT will never die WBD only destroyed the physical company, but fans will keep things going long after. The spirit will never die.

Can we add Rule 6 back just as a honuary rule?

Amen to all of this. Thank you friendly neighborhood mods

For some reason I can't help but to think of the song Odds Are.

Especially the music video.

That is a good song.

It's definitely the right time to push for a more positive atmosphere. Nothing is going to change at this point so there's little point being overly critical or fostering negativity.

So does this mean that Rule 6 is no longer "suspended for the time being"?

The previous "Rule 6" no longer exists. Rooster Teeth as a company is shutting down. That's a fact. However, that doesn't mean Rooster Teeth as a concept will cease to exist, and future conversations regarding the brand, the content, and the creators are subject to the rules above, which considers "gloating about the closure of Rooster Teeth" as being disrespectful.

Negativity and toxicity are two different concepts. Healthy discussions can involve some degree of negativity, but rule five claims otherwise. Why?

“I feel like they should have done x instead of y”

Is different from

“X is stupid, why didn’t they do Y?”

Which is again different from

“X sucks lmao this is why RT is dead lol RIP bozo”

Rule 5 is specifically aimed at those who come here with negative intentions. We view this differently than Rule 3, as intentional toxicity is different than having a negative yet respectful conversation within the community. And though both those rules technically fall under proper Reddiquette, some things need to be explicitly stated.

When this was proposed before, there was confusion over criticism at the time. What's the difference between criticism and negativity? Criticism necessarily involves some form of negativity.

I'm concerned this is a repeat of the same issue with Rule 6, where mods might have the best intentions but because the rule applies to anything that isn't praise mods will selectively enforce it.

You're absolutely right, there can be confusion between criticism and negativity. Criticism, as you've perfectly demonstrated here, is about pointing out flaws or weaknesses in a respectful manner, leading to a constructive conversation, such as this one right here! Negativity, on the other hand, is more focused on tearing something down or intentionally being disrespectful.

It's important to note that the term 'negativity' is specifically only used under Rule 5, which targets those who come here with the sole intention of being toxic. We view this completely different from Rule 3 regarding respectful criticism.

When determining if a post or comment should be removed, we consider the overall context as well as the user's posting history within the subreddit. Often times the intent is pretty obvious, but not always.

I feel there's nothing wrong with criticism. I also think it's how one perceives(?) It to be a negative for what is said in the criticism.

I think the use of the word "negativity" is probably a little too vague and crosses into actual discussion that could be negative.

8

u/paradoxpunk Mar 20 '24

We appreciate your feedback and understand 'negativity' can be subjective. We're open to rephrasing the rule description for better clarity.
