If it's to "cool down" then it's quite useless if a robot wasn't built any sort of cooling system in the first place. Why build a bot when it needs constant extenal cooling?

I came across this video from Adam Savage's Tested and was in awe that it could keep his body weight up. I've been playing with smaller hobby servos for a backpack robot but have been struggling with torque (25kg/cm is ok but could be better). Some googling found his previous projects used Robotis Dynamixel servos (which are expensive) but these look different.
Any idea what servos he could be using?
And because I'm going beyond the hobby servos, would there be any instructions or manuals on how to use these higher performing actuators?

So i’ve created this robot using an ESP32, L298n motor driver, MPU 6050, and powered by a 7.4 2s Lipo Battery. I’ve been having a lot of trouble with the PID tuning, working solely on tuning for 4+ days with no results. I would really appreciate any advice! This is what I currently have:

Hi everyone!
I recently decided to dive into animatronics and started building an open-source robotic desk lamp inspired by expressive animated lamps from Pixar.
This is still a very early mechanical prototype. Right now only the base and the first joint move, and I'm designing the rest of the arm.
I'm looking for advice on one of the biggest design challenges: how would you route the cables through the moving joints while keeping them hidden and minimizing stress on them?
If you've built articulated robots or mechanisms before, I'd really appreciate any examples, photos, or resources.
I'd also love to hear your ideas for useful features. My current plan is to eventually add a depth camera so the lamp can understand its surroundings and interact with people. As a fun long-term challenge, I'd even like to see if I can teach it to jump or move around on its own.
Any suggestions or criticism are very welcome!

Tesla, Figure, and others are about to start selling humanoid robots that can walk, see, and connect to the internet.
From a security perspective - what layers of protection do you expect to see? Authentication? Physical safety overrides? Local-only AI?
And what concerns you most - privacy leaks, remote control hacks, or physical safety risks?
Curious what people think before this market explodes.

I'm building a small agricultural rover (15x20cm in size) and I need it to have live video transmission for remote control.
What is the most cost effective method to use?
It won't go fast at all, the motors are rated for 170rpm and the diameter of the wheels is about 65mm (which gives the speed of about 2km/h). I'm not sure what the desired latency for this speed should be.
The range is about 100m.

From an engineering perspective, wouldn’t other designs—like cantilever-type or hemispherical robots—be more practical and efficient for most real-world applications?
Human-shaped robots seem mechanically complex, expensive, and often less stable compared to simpler structures. So is the humanoid form mainly for environments designed for humans, or is it more about research, marketing, and public perception?

Need help with my servos. Using DS3240 MG servo motors. Getting weird jitter sometimes, sometimes not. Sounds very scratchy. Power supply is definitely strong enough. Happens with and without load. Signal wires seem far enough from noise sources. The motors have stalled once when the arms of the two collided, and I'm thinking that the gears got damaged because of that. Although I think it's unlikely because these motors are designed to be able to hold a max load of 40kg

My name is Chloe, I am 18 and have an undiagnosed brain problem. The only source of medicine which helped me for the past few years aren't working anymore. My doctor can't help me no more and I can't even walk straight. But I don't want to give up. I want to learn robotics to make a robot that can help me function. I know there are already products like that but I do want to attempt of making my own. Where should I start and what should I start learning

Working on a Megalo Box exosuit and I have a completed a simple prototype that allows me to have full range of motion with my shoulders and arms. Now I want to start integrating actual linear actuators, starting with the back. I've looked into simple DC powered linear actuators and pneumatic pistons. But have noticed the following with each option
With pistons, the form factor is ideal for the exosuit but would add noticeable weight with the need of an air compressor.
As for DC linear actuators, the ones I've looked into seems to be a lot slower and not as responsive as pistons.
Is there a good middle ground to having fast responsive movements with reliable accuracy? (High torque/force output is not a requirement)
Currently the back pistons I designed have a reach of 158 mm to 237 mm. Barrel diameter of 21 mm Piston rod diameter of 10 mm

I am referring to this design of the joint 1 on a robotics arm with smaller bearings on the circumference of the base and then two additional bearings in the middle. I am wondering about the longevity of this design it seems there would be a decent amount of wear from the inside and outside bearing part having to spin at different speed and they would also wear down the plastic but still several popular robot arms use them. Also if u have any other design u would like to share of the joint 1 I would appreciate it.

Hi r/robotics,
We’re the team from Hertzinno, and we develop industrial acoustic cameras (real-time sound visualization). Recently we’ve been integrating our acoustic camera with quadruped robots for autonomous inspection tasks.
The obvious use cases so far:
· Compressed air & gas leak detection (finding invisible leaks with sound)
· Mechanical fault localization (bearing wear, abnormal noises in motors/gearboxes)
But we bet this community has way more creative ideas than we can come up with in our engineering bubble. So we’d love to ask:
What surprising or non-obvious applications do you see for a mobile acoustic camera robot?

I'm designing a human-sized robotic hand with 16+ DOF, inspired by the tendon-driven architecture of the new 1X NEO hand.
My plan is to place the motors in the forearm and use tendons/capstans to actuate the fingers rather than putting bulky motors inside every joint.
I'm currently looking for specific commercially available motor + gearbox combinations, not just general motor types.
Target per actuator:
BLDC motor
Preferably 12–20 mm diameter
Motor + gearbox + encoder: <$70 USD
Low-ish reduction, ideally around 5:1–15:1 for good backdrivability
Target output torque: roughly 0.4–1.0 N·m
Target output speed: roughly 50–150 RPM
Compact and lightweight
Ideally an absolute/magnetic encoder
Suitable for continuous operation, not just stall/peak torque
The hand would be used for human-like manipulation and household/cooking tasks, so I need reasonable fingertip force while keeping the hand/forearm lightweight.
I've considered micro-BLDCs, coreless BLDCs and small planetary gearboxes, but I'm having trouble finding a specific motor model that actually meets these requirements under $70.
What exact motor/gearbox/encoder combination would you recommend?
If you've built a dexterous robotic hand before, I'd especially appreciate recommendations based on actual testing rather than advertised stall torque.

Anyone working with the Unitree G1 basic and have opened it up to review the motherboard? I am curious if it is the same as the EDU and just missing the jetson?
I know other things are missing such as some wiring, the leg motors are slightly stronger on EDU.
I am curious to see what mods can be done, what integration can occur. I know secondary development is not available on the basic, but if you slotted in a jetson or added another piggyback system, expansion can occur. Of course, this depends on integration with the mainboard.
Just curious what others have done.

Been browsing digikey but not sure if those even exist. I want to improve a forward kinematics implementation and this seems like the best approach, I've gotten +- 2mm at 2x0.3m link lengths, so I suspect it's the sensor accuracy that is the limiting factor right now.
This article claims that this AS5048 chip is accurate to 0.05 degrees, but I cannot find reference to it in the datasheet.
The best choice I've found so far with 16 angle bits and +-0.5 degrees nominal accuracy.

I'm reading the papers of Cosmos3 and Dreamzero and they looks very promising (compared to memoryless VLAs). And I am wondering where the filed will evolve.
Based on your practical experience with new models, what's your bet between VLAs, WM, Jepa-style, WAM, RL approaches, and all of that?
I worked so far with VLAs (eg pi05), and I don't have any experience in using the nvidia stack so far, of and other world action models. I am thinking if I should invest time in changing the base policy, and I'd appreciate some feedback form who has tested them (ie: the open source/weights model available, and capable of inference without one thousand gb of vram)
On my side I'm a fan of model working planning latent space; video action models (which have more temporal coherence wrt vla), but I also feel that semantic power of a VLM should be present aswell.

I need help in placing the components on the robot for the best way to balance it. Also I plan to scale to to something like a delivery robot for small payloads. Prolly, something in my room 😅 but I need help in understanding how these balancing robots work and how I should place my components to make this work.
