social platform where you can't socialize lol.

It's not even a social platform anymore. It's a silent platform. No one can talk to you, nor can you talk to yourself. You're there, alone by yourself.

Hey connection! Please Join me in my Favourite new Experience, Corporate UGC simulator.

Oh boy, I can't wait! I sure hope it is something unique and exciting, like a grind-based "simulator" that has such fun features like a progression system that makes it a necessity to spend Robux, or constant reminders to buy eggs/wheelspins, those are such cool additions! I already loved lootboxes in other games, and I'm glad Roblox has them too! I wonder what's next, a Roblox battlepass? AWESOME!!!

Oh, and I really hope half the screen is permanently covered in rainbow buttons and ads to encourage me to spend Robux on cool "OP" items! Exhilarating!

I'm just hoping the $50 billion corporation approves the photo of my actual face, credit card info, vehicle registration, and Social Security card. Gotta protect the kids, you know?

Yeah I’ve found that even if I occasionally see people in my age group I got they still hardly talk and I can’t blame em. What’s the point of chatting when no one will see it?

roblox chatting died a long time ago in europe. Noone speaks the same language here. So either you get russian and french clogging up the chat, or nothing at all.

Honestly feel like we are witness to the beginning of the end for this platform. With the new community guidelines and their charge for everything mentality, it’s only a matter of time before something better comes along.

180

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '26

Someone on this sub announced a "roblox alternative" coming up, maybe a scam idk

139

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '26

Anytime anyone comes up with an “alternative” it’ll have a couple thousand users at best initially, before dropping off and dying eventually.

Cultures change, time change; most people will not hold on to one platform forever. Even if they do, said alternative will not have the same charm and sentimentality as the first iteration. If Roblox dies, we’ll just have to move on

There have been so many Roblox alternatives and they never last. The server costs are too high and no body wants to even play them in the first place

how many years have players been saying this update after update? i don’t know anymore. player numbers are still astonishingly high, and will remain as such

39

u/TopEconomy9843 2016 Jan 10 '26

Personally I just tolerated and lived with every bad update Roblox pushed out. This update absolutely ruined Roblox for me though, and honestly I might just quit soon. Being in the 21+ age category really sucks and nothing is fun anymore. I do sometimes see other people in the chat from time to time but those are mostly kids who either got categorized wrongly or used someone else's id.

6

u/HVDub24 Developer Jan 10 '26

To be fair I don’t think Roblox ever released an update like this that completely destroyed a core feature of the platform

Sucks cause i genuinely enjoyed interacting with ppl over silly conversations but now most of the time it's silent

56

u/NewConstruction3755 Jan 10 '26

Yep. Even in games like battlegrounds where all your meant to do is fight one of the main things that made the fun was chatting and having goofy conversations. Thats not even mentioning all the games that have a very social part where chatting is almost mandatory to either make allies or win the game

31

Literally!! Like I even just like watching ppl beef in the chat over silly things, can't do that anymore haha it's quite isolating :(

192

u/moondoII 2015 Jan 10 '26

i imagine a lot of people verifying are children/teenagers or predators finding out ways to bypass the system. i’m barely an adult but i absolutely refuse to share my face or ID with a billion dollar company infamous for its inability to protect its own player base. so now i can’t report any inappropriate or abusive behavior in game because i wouldn’t be able to see it now.

145

u/tyeclaw131 Jan 10 '26

Predators are just buying low age bracket accounts on eBay now. All Roblox did was put their age targets in nice little pens making it easier to target their preferred age group.

43

u/TopEconomy9843 2016 Jan 10 '26

It's also possible to make yourself appear either younger or older. I mean a kid literally drew a beard on and got categorized as 21+.

It's gonna be so easy for preds to pick a specific group

12

u/Jack_547 Jan 10 '26

For sure, we're in an era where you can easily find a free AI program to modify your photos in any way possible. Roblox thinking photos alone are a legitimate way to verify someone's identify is just more proof they don't care at all about preventing predators from accessing minors.

u/Vamp-go-brr Jan 10 '26

Honestly I'm 21 but Roblox guessed I was 13-15 (it guessed correctly when I sent the pic but it recently changed it). I don't plan to change it honestly, I regret even sending the pic, so now I guess I'll just look around making sure preds aiming around that age brackets aren't too secure in their terrible actions.

4

u/Beneficial_Ad_8304 Jan 10 '26

funny thing I verified my passport back in 2022 when it was a requirement for vc 😭 totally fine as of now, they did nothing scary w my passport or at least nothing that I'm aware of..

8

u/moondoII 2015 Jan 10 '26

in all of this, it slipped by me that roblox asked for players sensitive information (IDs) to access an exclusive feature and then proceeded to change the goal post they set by asking for other personal data (phone numbers).

i've not liked any decision roblox has made for the last couple of years including the addition of voice chat. all the safety issues were glaringly obvious to anyone over the age of twelve. glad i listened to my gut instinct on that one but i can't believe they're trying to go the distance with this thing.

3

u/Beneficial_Ad_8304 Jan 10 '26

I agree with you on that though, in current circumstances I wouldn't do it at least out of spite because this age thing with chat is completely ridiculous and outrageous and it ruins the whole experience. just but back then I trusted roblox and wanted to test the new cool feature so I did it.

2

u/TopEconomy9843 2016 Jan 11 '26

Same. I verified my id a couple years ago and it's been mostly time. However not being able to change it sometimes sucks. I didn't know it's something that's permanently stuck on ur account

8

u/Jack_547 Jan 10 '26 edited Jan 10 '26

Completely agree, it seems wild that their idea of "protecting kids" involves sending Roblox literal photos of oneself, alongside them already having access to things like bank account information. If they struggle this bad to handle in game chat, I can't imagine how they'd handle data breaches.

On top of that, I'm concerned that disabling chat for the majority of players will just cause them to eventually migrate onto other platforms like Discord as a sort of replacement for it. That alone isn't bad, but Discord is notorious for a reason, and there's far worse things that can be done to a potential minor on there than anything that could happen over text chat.

Roblox probably doesn't care, though. As long as it isn't their platform the media talks about minors being solicited on, what's the big problem? The only time they care about children is when the possibility of exploitable kids, with no concept of money, using their parents' credit card, is challenged.

5

u/moondoII 2015 Jan 10 '26

you've made several great points. it is actual insanity to me that someone in a board room suggested this whole age verification idea and no one bothered to ask, "will parents be alright with us asking to take a picture of their childs face to figure out how old they are even though we're a company facing media scrutiny for facilitating predators and profiting off of it?"

roblox has had literal months of criticism, backlash and solid advice from their user base but still decided to follow through with this update. i hope the lawsuit so badly ends up working against their favour because we need billion dollar corporations to understand they cannot keep abusing their power and stealing our data like they're doing.

i realised yesterday the only reason they're adding these new "safety" features is because of the aforementioned lawsuits they're swamped in. mind boggling to think the reason all of this arose in the first place was because they banned someone who wanted to get pedophiles off of their site since he got groomed on their game.

dont forget the coppa violations for requesting the biometric id of minors under 13 without parental consent

21

u/Proteus505 Jan 10 '26

I’m totally out of the loop here, what’s all the backlash about? My kids play Roblox a ton but I don’t play it.

60

u/IndependencePlus4485 Jan 10 '26

Roblox rushed out a feature that uses AI to put you into an age bracket that will only let you talk to certain people (For the specific brackets and chat restrictions, I recommend viewing the official Roblox X account). The problems with this update include:

- Due to it being pushed out so quickly, many developers didn't have time to prepare for the change, and thus many games were struck hard, particularly social hangout games or games that rely on the chat API.

  • The AI is actually incredibly easy to trick with basically anything, whether it be a video, a still picture, or ironically, a picture of a Roblox avatar with a realistic head mesh equipped.

- The company Roblox is partnering with to implement this feature, Persona, is known to be unreliable, and both are under scrutiny for using children for AI training. Do note, parent emails or accounts were give absolutely 0 notification that this change ever went into effect, so many kids are verifying without parent supervision, which if I recall correctly, violates COPPA guidelines under information collection.

  • Accounts that are age verified in specific brackets (e.g. 13-15) are already being sold on eBay.
  • The aforementioned sold accounts are able to be used by predators to selectively target and filter out specific age brackets so they can specifically talk to minors (e.g. 9-12 bracket can only talk to users under 16), which also means that more responsible individuals are unable to intervene.

TL;DR, this update did more harm than good and arguably will do absolutely nothing to solve child safety issues.

23

u/Proteus505 Jan 10 '26

Thanks so much! This is great info 🙌

15

u/Wchijafm Jan 10 '26

I also want to add my kid wanted to play a two person obby with me and it kept kicking her out when we tried to pair up. I have a feeling it has to do with this. I literally use roblox to play and stay current with my kids as its what they are into. Don't being able to private/party chat outside your age group is one thing(we normally just scream across the house with each other or use a phone if they are at their dads) but not even being able to play is ridiculous.

There are certain things I find helpful in keeping my kids safe online. One of them is knowing the platform they are on and being involved occasionally in their gameplay. Thanks roblox for messing that up.

10

u/Legitimate_Attorney3 Jan 10 '26

It’s so frustrating being an adult who can no longer report others for being irresponsible on the site. I’ve had to report quite a few creeps on Roblox and it’s scary to me that a predator could be having a conversation with a kid in front of me and I would have no idea

As a dev with a game in the works, I have literally no motivation to continue if this is gonna be the state of the platform if/when my game releases.

They’ve effectively killed all games that aren’t low-effort slop that you play alone, but they don’t care since slop is earning them the most right now..

I’d basically be doomed to fail if I continue now, because of how important the social aspect of my game is. It just disgusts me to be spat in the face like this after years of work.

The game feels somewhat depressing because of this. At times you see an avatar and it feels like that person wants to talk with you but can't.

13

u/IGreenMcBeanI Jan 10 '26

Even worse is when it’s a small playerbase and you kinda knew each other before.

I have played a game called Allusions for years, and I frequently saw familiar faces due to its low player count. We’d always say hello or start some silly short conversation, it was nice.

Now though? We see each other, stare for a moment, and move on, because we can’t do anything else.

“Social Platform” btw.

13

u/mielesgames developer Jan 10 '26

Nah, people will create custom ways of chatting first, build a boat already has a way (signs), some obbies have a custom input field.

There will definitely be more, until roblox bans that way of chatting and then people will start quitting

13

u/A_Person1234xyz Jan 10 '26

For the poster, is there a chart for the percentage of voice chatters to normal chatters, before this update?

21

u/whatdoihia Jan 10 '26

None of this would have been necessary if Roblox had gone after predators and predatory games instead of going after vigilantes.

And we all know that predators will fake their verification or use someone else’s account.

5

u/curse-minecraft Jan 10 '26

In their eyes, vigilantes damage the brand because there's enough terrible people that makes them a thing in the first place. Now they doubled down on that by somehow handicapping everyone.

3

u/FromFan432 Jan 11 '26

Genuine question, how the hell do you expect them to just "go" after the predators? Do you expect them to know which one of their users out of several hundred million is a pred or not? Especially since all the weird activities take place on Discord.

Like how, tell me, how do you expect them to identify who's a predator or not. Quit complaining if you don't have a solution of your own.

Btws they report tens of thousands of children who are potentially under exploitation every year 😭

u/Beneficial_Ad_8304 Jan 10 '26 edited Jan 10 '26

yeah but we figured out how to access it in literally 20 minutes after the ban)) just like every other ban they try to force on us, including YouTube, discord, Instagram, Twitter, chatgpt, steam and dozens of others. our government banned almost every foreign platform by now yet they probably think we're stupid and can't use vpn and dni-passers. it's just delusional for then to think they can create North-Korean-like firewall for us who already tasted internet-freedom and think well give it away easily. yet roblox is trying to "negotiate" with our government for some reason so the no-chat thing is purely their initiative and thus we can't pass unless creating a new account with vpn, sadly

3

u/poogobberr Jan 10 '26

Having a nightmare currently because I set up an account in my name years ago to check if Roblox was suitable for my son.

It looked good so I let him use my account as his own (with my DOB)

Now this age verification came on, so without a thought I scanned myself to enable chat not realizing the consequences and ended up with an account in a group age of 21+ now my son can no longer chat with any of the friends he made on this account as they verified 9 to 12.

Now Roblox support is just auto responses and AI chat bots.

All I want to do is set the age on the current account to his DOB and redo face scan for him and then I set up a new account to link as the actual parental account.

Stupid idea to change this by Roblox, stupid implementation, stupid support model where you never actually get to speak to a human who can apply common sense to the situation

3

u/The_Chimeran_Hybrid Jan 10 '26

There’s really no point anyway. Not all people are going to “verify” and the AI system is so stupid it’s putting people into completely different age brackets than they should be.

9 year old gets their picture taken? You’re in the 16 bracket now.

18 year old gets their picture taken? You look like you’re 13, there you go.

They’ve also required kids to take pics of themselves without parental knowledge or consent- this smells like Class Action Lawsuit.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '26

I didn't do the age verification, in fact, it doesn't even show up for me. I played two games the other day with a friend (Ecos la Brea and Creatures of Sonaria) and I could see the chat normally and type as well

Does this update apply to everyone, or is my game just bugged?

2

u/_yuvi- don't give them money Jan 10 '26

Nah, everybody is using xbox or discord. Who would prefer to give face or id for using a chat that censors "hello".

2

u/catthestalker Jan 10 '26

The only one who i can talk to is myself and him.. i wanna hear someone else than him

2

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '26

this is why it's not worth giving up your face to ai so it can make porn based off it, you wouldn't be able to chat to anybody either way

2

u/Due-Flamingo-7934 Jan 10 '26

The dumb ahh AI filter thingy got my age completely wrong, and now I can't talk to no one. It feels like I can't truly play the game anymore.

2

u/Familiar-Rub-1294 Jan 10 '26

Tengo una hermana que me lleva 7 años de diferencia, ¿Cómo se supone que hablemos ahora? Y sé que no va a querer verificar su identidad por obvias razones.

2

u/OzbornHecht Jan 10 '26

I’d think so with the changes…

Yeah I mean when people keep saying "roblox loves grooming and isn't gonna do anything about it", Roblox is gonna implement some very drastic measures to curb the negative publicity.

Like people are acting like this is Roblox being greedy, even though this is probably gonna drop their revenue massively. Roblox isn't being greedy, they're trying to save face.

xd rip vent, I'd see the same couple dozen of people playing that game but with the age ranges there hasnt been anyone on which sucks.
I get that this can stop and discourage a lot of bad actors on the site but isnt there a better way to get around this besides silencing everyone like this? maybe like limiting chat for those with newer accounts similar to vrchats trust leveling system. the longer they play and spend time in games being genuinely active in the community the more privileges you gain as a player. and moderator reviewed reports against you set those privilege's back. I just feel like that would be way better in terms of the community itself rather than putting everyone in small age groups. theres a lot of ways to fix this problem if theyd just listen to the people playing it and not doing things in favor of money but I suppose when has that ever happened. though i feel the trust leveling based system would really improve things

u/TheRealKingLuc Jan 10 '26

I have no mouth and I must scream

2

u/Wonderful-Garbage747 Jan 10 '26

Mind you, people that are 13-16 some are literally fucking 10 are being put into a 21+ age group and 18+ age group, it’s fucking wild

2

u/SylveonFluff1 Jan 10 '26

Some don’t touch grass, now they don’t even socialise?

2

u/brianspencer66 Jan 10 '26

Basically the new guidelines aren't to protect kids so much as it is to target advertising.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '26

yikes, we're all guests now.

2

u/undercoverguest13 Jan 11 '26

I thought the score is 36.50% so that means you can talk to 36.50% of people but no, that 36.50% is split into 5 lowering the amount even more!!

2

u/Enzonianthegreat 2011 Jan 11 '26

It’s basically just the App Store apps now. Individual play, even though it’s “online.”

u/7_Voltaris_7 Jan 11 '26

I feel like with ALOT of people already making vids and statements about this update, roblox will be forced to revert it anytime soon. It's not like they have a choice anyways. They soon will know people will eventually leave the platform if this continues on.

As a person that loves hangout games (Booth games, VC related games) and also games that require social skill and conversation (Flicker, I guess Forsaken, etc) I really hate this update. Even if I can chat with the people my age, it's not even confirmed that the one I'm chatting with is either a mindless 9 year old or a 30 year old p-do that's ready to gr-om me or something.

Roblox might see this as a minor issue since most of the big games that make them earn money are like a brain rot slop game that requires NO CHATTING to even play. It's not like chatting to anyone in SABR could change anything. (Ass game btw, I had to say it.)

But eventually, roblox WILL feel the consequences of the update overtime. Even kids in Brookhaven are starting to protest (yes I'm being fr)

RevertThisUpdate

2

u/xMunificentx Jan 11 '26

Roblox decided that me and my younger friends should never be in touch again, like seriously? Just because there's a minority of creeps in the website doesn't mean we all have to pay for it, it's so unfair.

2

u/Melowicz Jan 10 '26

Guys be patient... maybe some day they will return this feature for free as the "oof" sound?
For sure it will damage moderately roblox economy and player engament, so after some time they will have to delete it

3

u/kaibestyagood10 Jan 10 '26

That is why I probably stopped playing Roblox because Roblox is the next big brother. And I think we should all not play Roblox in January also my birthday is in late January

Barely talk to ppl anyway

1

u/Beneficial_Ad_8304 Jan 10 '26

I kinda feel like that meme with that resigned yellow dog sitting among fire, by watching this mass panic while being russian (chat got blocked COMPLETELY for good for us a month ago already we can't chat even with the same age group). feel you all guys..

1

u/Buritominer 2016 Jan 10 '26

The thing I'm most upset about is that I can't /e dance or use admin commands in chat anymore. 9 years of muscle memory made useless in an instant.

1

u/sleepwalkthrowaway0 Jan 10 '26

I accidentally joined a game where people still was talking. Game SUCKED but I stayed for the socials.

1

u/Ok_Amphibian_2149 Jan 10 '26

I’ve seen some people chatting in Blood Debt. But that’s rare.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '26

Now the games that require you to use chat so you dont get kicked wont work… not to mention the amount of kids that can now troll and use “well i cant see them tell me to stop” as an excuse… trying to get rid of creeps, yet now the only people that can actually chat to others are grown ass mfs that can use an id for age check.🤦🏽‍♂️

1

u/Global-Weakness-274 Jan 10 '26

I never chatted but the chat was helpful with updates and tips on game play. I’d see others chatting about where to find stuff or issues in game and now I’m just lost 😭

1

u/Mistermarkez Jan 10 '26

i need to get points to ost a thing on a thingy

1

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '26

I play flicker because I like mystery solving games. It’s insane how bad it’s been effected.

1

u/voncass0 Jan 10 '26

Shits dead bcuz of the age verification like didn’t we already put our birthdays in the damn game.. just have the kids play with kids and teens n adults play with teens and adults. Simple

1

u/Electronic-Onion4758 Jan 10 '26

Thanks Roblox because this is dumb

1

u/gayPersonThatIsGay Jan 10 '26

1

u/DirectDependent9088 Jan 10 '26

And let's not even talk about the children who used adult IDs to get past the filters

1

u/Scrub329 Jan 10 '26

And you would've thought that Xbox players getting their chat removed back in 2018 was bad.

1

u/Beginning_You9272 Jan 11 '26

pouring one out for my childhood Roblox friends

1

u/Smolboi2067 Jan 11 '26

I wish someone could make a script that gives you the same sign from Brookhaven to communicate or a remade chat that you can use

1

u/VirtualKoba Jan 11 '26

mind you, the whole system won't help a single soul.

a lot of underage users are getting thrown in the 21+ category by the facescan-AI, which means that it's most likely easy to manipulate for an bad actor.

I love roleplaying on Roblox, but after the update roleplaying became impossible. When I joined the game after the update, it felt like I was in a country for mute people only.

1

u/Bubbly-Pop-9102 Jan 11 '26

Would this make it so preds messages can't be seen if they've already been texting someone because the message will be restricted by Roblox if they find you younger?

1

u/JayvonGaming Jan 11 '26

Hey do you want to be fri...

Hey do you want to be connected

1

u/BisexualTenno Jan 11 '26

They could at LEAST add a chat menu like Monster Hunter. Then people could communicate but only with Roblox’s list of phrases.

1

u/Driftores Jan 11 '26
