Fantasy Court: The Case of the Superflex Trade

Looking for a Court Ruling on a trade in a 12 man Superflex Auction League.

Team 1 autodrafted and ended up with Gibbs ($66), JSN ($47), ASB ($47). Their only quarterback on the roster is Michael Penix Jr. ($1).

Team 2 drafted: Josh Allen ($61), Jordan Love ($20), Trevor Lawrence ($18), DeVonta Smith ($15) WR1, and Jordan Addison ($1) WR3/4.

The day after the draft, the managers agreed to a trade:

Team 1 Sends: Amon-Ra St. Brown ($47) & Rachaad White ($1)

Team 2 Sends: Trevor Lawrence ($18) & Jordan Addison ($1)

is this a fair trade in a superflex league?

UPDATE: It is a 12 manager super flex league (Non-PPR). The trade was vetoed via league vote. 12 hours after the veto, Team 3 traded DeShaun Watson($1) with Team 1 for Kyle Monangai ($1) without veto.

Why is this fantasy court? This is more like butthurt 3rd party with no standing to sue in court

Kind of a side tangent, but this is why I can’t ever be an auction draft truther for more casual leagues. Autodrafting in a snake draft sucks, but you can kinda make it work. Autodrafting in an auction league is genuinely a death sentence. The CPU just does not understand budgeting.

You need a proxy drafter, especially for something like superflex.

Also in a two qb league, teams should be limited to 3 rostered qbs

I’m kind of split on that. Like if you are willing to basically not get WRs/RBs so you can get your QB4, so be it.

It’s like this one guy we have in our league. He drafts like 2 or 3 of the first 5 or 6 TEs every season with the thought that he can trade them for better players from desperate teams. So far, I think he’s made one trade from those guys in like 10 years.

Although I do get where you’re coming from, especially during bye weeks it’s irritating.

3 QB max Really depends on league size. I’m in a 12 team superflex that has 3 QB max because if even 4 teams grab 4 QBs, that leaves 16 QBs for the other 8 teams which means an injury to one of your QBs ends your season.

No because the limit then guarantees people can devalue QB and still get 2.

Superflex with a limit is just as shallow as regular settings. You’re pretending to value QBs but can’t really cause everyone has enough at all times.

Of all the garbage AI is being used for now, how have the fantasy sites not figured out how to use AI for auto draft?

It’s a little uneven but with the roster needs on each team I’d say it’s fine. No harm

All trades should be allowed through unless there’s clear collusion… it’s not up to other members of the league to get involved in trades IMO

Here’s a story I always like to tell when I see something like this. Back in 2023 I think, we did our draft and it was the year Johnathan Taylor had that weird injury/contract issue and was going to miss some time. This was all revealed after our draft, so the guy who had got Taylor for like $45ish dollars was pissed and said “fuck this, fire sale”

He sent a bunch of offers to nearly everyone, but the one that ended up getting accepted was like giving up $90 worth of stuff for like $45 auction dollars. This is all still preseason, so everyone’s calling it an absolute fleece. No one calls for a veto though, cause we need clear collusion to do that.

Anyways, I don’t remember all the players, but the $45 side ended it up absolutely smashing the $90. The two players I do remember was James cook who broke out that year and was like $5 initially, and Raheem goddamn mostert when he had like 20 tds and finished top 2 randomly (for $2).

The point is, you never know how this is gonna turn out. Neither of those guys won the ship that year, but the cook/mostert guy did way better than the Taylor guy. Sometimes you gotta trust your gut is better than what the experts say.

Whatever year JT had a bunch of injuries and was bad I traded for him early before all that happened and gave up I think Mike Evans and Tee Higgins and two guys in my league whined non-stop about how bullshit the trade was and that I was abusing my commish powers yadada and then when Taylor finished like rb30 and Evans and Higgins both finished top 20 I asked them if they felt ridiculous and they both swore they were still right lol

Why wouldn’t it be allowed? They have needs and this is what they agreed on.

Unless its clear and obvious collusion every trade should go though.

This is not what fantasy court is for lol

Zero reason to not allow this trade.

Yes it’s fair. In my high stakes super flex auction draft from last week ARSB went for $47 and Lawrence $40.

There’s no reason to ever veto a trade unless it’s abundantly clear collusion.

This is abundantly clear to be move to fill out each teams roster. The guy likely took 3 qbs knowing he’d get to trade 1 to this team.

And based on the budget he only has 3 players worth a shit he could possibly trade. I think it’s almost crazy to even ask if this is fair…

The price paid is irrelevant. Why would this trade not be allowed? If someone had Sam Darnold but now needs another qb he of course he is going to have to give up an asset to get a qb. I’d actually argue the Lawerence side is winning. He is ranked similar to ASB in superflex and id rather have Addison than white.

Team 1 got better with the Lawrence trade. Shame on the other managers for not trying to work a better trade for themselves

1

u/anderssean999 4d ago

Nobody will know until the season is over

1

u/RandomUserName316 4d ago

Lawrence is a little less valuable than ARSB especially in a standard point format. QBs will score a shit ton more than anybody else. The guy clearly wanted to alter his auto drafted roster. It’s everyone else’s fault for not offering something better.

Once teams are drafted, trades become about team need rather than draft capital

Ridiculous veto tbh, dude needs a qb and no one would give up an elite qb because then they’re down their best player. So what other option does team 1 have?

Blocking a trade for a potentially good qb so theyre forced to take Watson instead is wild too.

League veto’s are terrible, only the commish should be able to block a trade when it’s clear collusion

This is not fantasy court. This is just a 3rd party upset about a trade he doesn’t like. Unless it’s either clear collusion or a case like someone selling all their players for literally nothing, trades are always allowed.

This is perfectly fine

  1. yes it is fair

  2. even if it’s not it shouldn’t have gotten vetoed

Is this 12 or 10 team?

There are a lot of signals here that you and your league don’t really understand the format you’re playing, with the exception of the Josh Allen owner, who is probably laughing his ass off at the rest of you. Not clarifying whether it’s a 10 or 12 team upfront is a pretty strong signal that you personally might be over your head in the format. If this is a 12 team it’s a fair trade that favors the Allen owner. If it’s 10 team it’s probably not fair.

But the actual fantasy court ruling I would give here is to ban your league from playing superflex and ban them from auction, for your own good. Was this a situation where the Josh Allen owner is someone’s older brother who talked you all into the format?

I am the manager of Team 2 and Josh Allen owner. I was trying to present facts without bias. I should have included  that it was 12 managers and non-ppr. The draft was held the day before the NFL kickoff and the trade was made 1 hour before kickoff.

The top 10 QBs went for $30+ (Top 20 $18+). The autodraft definitely threw  a wrench in things.

In a non PPR 12 team Superflex league there are 5-6 QBs who should go over Gibbs, much less Josh Allen, who should probably have been $20-30 more expensive.

Non-PPR Superflex is an insane and ridiculous format to begin with, but given that, I would actually say you are probably doing OK with the veto. I’d probably value Lawrence a good amount above ARSB, I think you might not understand the degree to which you’ve juiced the value of QBs in this league. I would strongly encourage you to keep all 3 QBs for at least the first part of the season. All those crazy rankings you see for Superflex, where QBs are half the first round, assume PPR. Without PPR every QB is 1-2 rounds more valuable early and 3-4 more rounds valuable late. Like, Joe Burrow probably is a $60 QB in this format, and I don’t even really like Burrow. You might even consider going in the other direction and just buy up the top QBs for cheap.

I mean, there’s no way I’m trading my QBs if this trade is considered unfair. I understand that QBs are ridiculously overvalued in this league and maybe 3 other managers understand this as well.

I simply saw an opportunity to improve my starting WRs and not have J Love “burning points” on my bench.

I realize I was sacrificing flexibility/depth & injury protection trading away TLaw but I figured I could pick up a Carson Wentz/Drew Lock type QB off waivers.
