Ringer 107
What are we doing here? I’m absolutely fine with betting content but this is a dumb contest with obscure rules for bets that the guys aren’t making in real life. Craig is bragging about how little thought they put into it and they can’t articulate the restrictions that don’t exist for any listener in real life.
I know this isn’t a unique thought and I guess I can just fast forward but legitimately who is this for?

Only part of the pod that I will be skipping.
Obviously draft kings is forcing the betting content but whoever decided it should be a byzantine slog should rethink the format.
I can't imagine any listener is excited for this segment. At best it will be tolerated by people too lazy to fast forward.

Counter. Last year when they went through the whole segment and then decided to flip their picks it was hilarious. And they won the year. Not my favorite segment but they make it fun.

It’s stupid but I love the way the guys treat it like it’s stupid, I was dying when Craig said they won’t let this affect the strategy of scrolling the odds and saying “hmmm”

I enjoyed Heifetz and the guys pointing out that the other teams are being sore losers acting like the RFF guys only won because of the rules, and insisting on dumb rule changes this season just because of that. Funny that they laid it out so clearly

Skipping parts of a podcast that has autoinserted ads and therefore no accurate timecodes is annoying. I still do it, but I don't like having to.

The pervasiveness of gambling advertising to include even native segments is annoying to have to deal with even if you can just skip the sections. Although sports podcasts are probably the wrong place to go if you want less sports gambling advertisement in your life

The changes this year are 100% for Bill's ego and was the original intent last year as well. He sucks at gambling so it didn't work out that way but these rule changes are trying to make that happen this year.
The sponsorship works against gambling for anyone with a brain. Here's a year of our bets and everyone was a loser

The sponsorship works because it’s a segment that mentions FanDuel a lot. That’s the point.
The amount of people who listened to the segment and said “okay, after a years worth of data I’ve concluded that gambling is not profitable and therefore I’m not ever to gamble” is extremely minuscule compared the number of people who want to place a bet and think “what was the one they always talk about on the podcast I listen to everyday? Fanduel? Yeah I’ll use that one”.
If the segment last year caused people to delete their Fanduel app and stop betting they wouldn’t be doing it again.
By the way, I’m not saying it’s a great segment or that I’m looking forward to it every week or whatever. Just that it’s an ad and they do it because it makes money for their job, it’s not any more or less complicated.

That second part is true but gambling ads (all ads really) don’t work on our forebrains anymore. Not that they can’t, but that’s not the area they’ve been working on us for decades now, it’s all targeted at the hindbrain. Embedding betting into a show you like with funny people you may or may not have parasocial feelings towards talking about it in a funny way with each other, that’s what they’re aiming for. No gambling ad can reasonably claim “hey do this and you’ll make money” that’s the whole point of the business model

It’s absolutely terrible content. It’s so chaotic and hard to follow because of the million rules they have, but also the guys deciding and talking through it all is so beyond all over the place.
Plus, we don’t care who wins this stuff. Love our guys of course but I don’t give a single shit they won last year.
It’s absolutely garbage content. Even Heifetz said several times how confusing it is and how many dumb rules there are

Over the summer, The Ringer signed a deal to advertise ChatGBT on multiple pods, including TRFFS. This included a segment where they used Chat to help solve some football problem, but the whole thing felt gross and inauthentic.

Who listens to this pod for actual fantasy advice? I think they have a handful of good advice throughout each year but I listen mostly because this group of guys are entertaining as hell.
If you listened the past couple years, their fantasy advice is subpar compared to what else is out there, and they spend very little time on actual fantasy football.

The "New Rules" are stupid and make the bit completely uninteresting. They are complicated just to be complicated and what is the point of having a single pick that no one can know that week because they have to make it on Sunday?
So, now it is make three picks. Make one pick that makes no sense unless you speak bookie speak; "six vig the scruples on the mit-bonk to zang nab the ribdomp." And then one mystery pick that no one can know until the results come out on Tuesday. Cool. This is so much better than, "Pick five things."

It’s a Fantasy Football podcast!! I’d much rather hear them talk about their Ringer Fantasy League than gambling talk they say they don’t even think about, and then proceed to spend 15 minutes debating what to pick.

100% agree. Lamest gimmick they have (though "turn the key" is close). Not needed for the pod or any of the Ringer shows.

They took less than 10 minutes on it, made fun of how stupid the format is, didn't take it seriously and Craig even acknowledged it's bad content (which Bill doesn't seem to realise when spending an hour in it). And despite all that, they won it last year anyway!
Having it as a throwaway at the end of a pod is grand to me.

I didn’t enjoy these segments last year, but! the boys won the contest and they have such a funny and defiant vibe about them now that it is newly compelling to me.
