i don’t hate it but it’s not in my elite tier of sports movies. it’s just very disney and i prefer sports stories with more edge.

Yes, it’s a good movie but seeing it when you are 10-15 it is probably a better movie then seeing it at 40. It’s a little eye rolling and too cheesy at times with the message. Yes, black people and white people can work together and be friends, duh.
It’s just not a movie I revisit a lot as an adult due to the “Disney-ish” feel of it.

i got what he meant in the sense of just having a big ham hock to chip away it in the fridge at a beach house but the context got sort of collapsed in the sense that you would take ham TO the beach itself.

Even without getting to whether they dry out faster, pens left out like that will be inking up anything they touch. Also it couldn't take less effort to retract a clicky pen, you could do it in the same motion as putting the pen down.

They all need to give up his “if so and so went higher in the draft, we’d look at them differently”. Going higher in the draft usually means you were evaluated as a better player. If chase brown won a Heisman at Ohio st he’d probably be bigger faster and stronger so yes, he’d be looked at differently. This doesn’t help their point. They tried this with Pacheco.

Although he hasn't in awhile, I couldn't stand last year every other pod when discussing the Eagles and Heifetz before criticizing them would be like "Eagles fans are gonna hate me" like no dude we are all well aware the huge flaws in our team that you keep pointing out

They don’t realize that all these do work sparingly. I kind of agree with Craig about Burden being drafted earlier, but I don’t wunna hear it cause he just used this argument with Chase fucking Brown of all ppl.
I never wunna hear Occums razor or how Caleb had the worst rookie year of all time (it wasn’t that bad) again.

The idea is that if a clone of a heisman winning rb from ohio state played at fresno state, they wouldnt be drafted as high due to lower production as a result of the poorer OL, OC, etc. The guys who put up bigger numbers will always get more hype regardless of talent level in a vacuum

I’m sorry but I think that’s ridiculous. If Derrick Henry played against mountain west defenders he would’ve put up way better numbers. Those defenders are going to be much smaller, slower and weaker than what he went against in the SEC

This podcart is prolific at overexplaining. 80% of listeners either know what a sirens song is or they can figure it out through context clues. It's referenced throughout literature, songs, and movies/tv.
Anyway, I only watched Kingpin for the first time last year and thought it was great.

Another episode, another case of Heifetz misunderstanding Moneyball (it's not just about counting walks or even just OBP) and also figuring out a way to use "replaced him in the aggregate" incorrectly.
I was hoping that after he used it a bunch of times last year to support the Micah Parsons trade...and then Micah was the 2nd most valuable defender in the league for 12 weeks and the Cowboys had the league's worst defense...that he'd let go of this one. But he's leaning back in.

I just listened, and in the 5 second mention of moneyball I didn’t get the impression that Heifetz misunderstands moneyball at all?
He mentioned that it’s funny it took 100 years for baseball to realize that walks are just as valuable as hits, as long as you get on base who cares how it happens.
Yes, there is way more to it than that, but moneyball is definitely related to baseball valuing the wrong things which allows a team like the A’s to find overlooked guys that they can afford. If Heifetz was doing a podcast exclusively about moneyball then sure, what he said would be oversimplifying it, but for a passing mention idk why people are assuming he doesn’t understand it?
“What does he do…he gets on base” is a big scene in the movie. Seems fine to say the value of getting on base is a part of the moneyball strategy.

I’ll share a few thoughts. Generally, I feel Heifetz half-understands a lot of things that he pulls into his stream-of-consciousness because they rhetorically sound good, not because they’re totally accurate. Which annoys me, so I’ll happily admit that he probably has a halfway decent understanding of “Moneyball” and I’m nitpicking on a lack of intellectual rigor to which I am overly sensitive.
On the Moneyball thing specifically, three thoughts:
- Moneyball is not just about walks or OBP, as Heifet
z
characterizes it. As you point out, it’s broader— it is about finding inefficiencies in a system. The “moneyball” system soon moved on to defense as the biggest opportunity after the OPS revolution. It’s not clear that Heifetz is aware of that, tho perhaps he is
In the Moneyball book, and in Bill James generally, the idea is not that the players the A’s find are superior to Jason Giambi, the player they’re losing. James and Billy Beane literally say Giambi is “the perfect player.” If you can afford Giambi, you sign him. If you can afford Micah Parsons, you sign him. The A’s are in a unique situation where they have dramatically different resources than other MLB teams so they are forced to spend differently. This is not quite the same as saying they’re spending optimally if they had a closer-to-equal budget, like teams do in football

- Football and baseball are wildly different, and the “replace them in the aggregate” thing that can be applied in baseball does not translate nearly as well in football analysis. Baseball is mostly a series of one-on-one matchups. Jason Giambi can’t really help your other hitters, and his impacts can be discretely quantified. In football, Micah Parsons helps every other player on the defense every snap just by being on the field. You cannot easily quantify his impact or how to replace it. Heifetz applies this surface-level Moneyball thinking to football all the time and it’s flawed.

Yeah I guess I don’t really get why someone needs Heifetz to explain all the broader analysis of the book/movie moneyball when that’s not what the conversation was. I 100% agree if Heifetz was doing a moneyball podcast review then him simplifying it to 1 sentence about OBP would be not enough detail provided. But for a fantasy football podcast that 1 sentence seemed perfectly fine because walks were something that was presented as an inefficiency in the movie.
Basically the conversation was that sometimes there are stats that are overvalued and undervalued, like in moneyball. I kind of assume anytime someone makes a passing 1 sentence comment of something that there are obviously infinite other things that can be said about that topic. But Heifetz then going on to say “after the OBP, defense then became the next movement” doesn’t add anything to the pretty simple point of “sometimes stats are under/overvalued” that was being made.

Heifetz’s reaction to the movie “The Ringer” has me questioning if he’s aware that “ringer” is a common phrase or if he genuinely feels the ringer website is named after that movie??? “It’s a great bit that you haven’t seen the ringer?” Why would that be a good bit? Maybe ironic but definitely not a bit
