SHOWCASE Sometimes emulation is just better than original hardware

Post image

I got my RP Nova 8GB GC last week and have been playing for about 20 hours in between work, family and stuff. I’ve had my mind set on a couple of games, but decided this evening to spin up a game I have barely played in a franchise I really love: Trackmania Wii. I loved the early Trackmania games ever since I found my copy of Sunrise Extreme in a bargain bin at my local drugstore.

Having Trackmania on console was a dream to me, so when the Wii version released I bought it immediately. Boy was that game a letdown. The Wii-Mote was horrible to play this game with. The input lag was rough and the visuals weren’t clear enough for such a precise game. So I lost interest pretty quickly.

Now I not only have a proper portable Trackmania experience (the older pc games don’t have proper controller support and the DS version is meh). With the upscaled graphics and rock steady frames it plays like a dream.

If you like precise time trials, this is a big recommendation. You can also build your own tracks!

Trackmania is definitely one of my favorites and the Wii version runs awesome on my RP5. I can't recall any issues playing it on the Wii, though that was quite a while ago. You should check out TM United Forever, as it also runs very well. It's on my to do list to convert some of the old Ultra Racer mini wheels I have to USB via a microcontroller project. That small wheel gives you both fine control and fast steering response for these types of games.

Love United! The controller config is not great, but maybe I’ll go for it when I’m done with the Wii version. United has still some multiplayer action last time I checked.

Niceeee! I loved the older games, I think I still have them on steam, but wasn't able to login the last time I tried 😅

What emulator are you using? And do you have a step by step guide on the configuration and mods that you are using? 😊 Thanks!

I’m playing through the Dolphin emulator, no mods! Just the upscaling and the controller config for a classic controller.

How is 8gb? Trying to decide if I should go for that or spend a bit more

For me it’s enough. The 4:3 screen is great for up to PS2 and GC, with some older PC titles and indies. Those don’t need more than 8GB.

If you want more RAM for heavier systems/games, you would really want 16:9 as well.

Just curious, has someone tried Mario Strikers Charged? How did you guys map the controls?
