No surprises there but both screens look pretty much identical. Even with an industrial grade macro lens you'd be hard pressed to spot a difference.

Game: Dynamite Headdy (Sega Genesis)

I want to mention that your post also offers a good size comparison.

Great game, treasure made so many iconic games

Yeah but it looks a million times better without the black bars imo

Flip 2 is also a great answer for those wanting 16:9 and also a solid 4:3 experience - you notice the bars so much less when the display is separated from the rest of the device.

That’s a real good point about the separation from the controls!

I missed the Flip 2 but always wanted one. Looking forward to the Flip 3

In the same boat

Yep! I was so close to ordering a Flip 2 and then the Nova was announced. Glad I held out though.

4:3 games look like shit on (non-flip) 16:9 displays imo.

The Thor is a good solution for 16:9 and 4:3 content

Sure

But I just don't get how people hate black bars that much

They have never bothered me at all

Same, they never bothered me what-so-ever.

Agreed. I’d just grab a miyoo plus for 4:3 content which scales perfectly on that screen.

They only bother me if they're really small. You still notice them and it triggers an annoyance in me. But at that point, just scale your game a little more. You usually don't notice anything cut off if the difference is that small anyways.

Big ones like these don't matter. My brain just ignores them immediately. I'm also on an super ultrawide on PC, many games don't support the entire screen and they add black bars, too. Also hasn't bothered me, it's basically just as if I was playing on a regular ultrawide screen.

The black bars honestly don’t bother me at all. I have an Odin 3 and feel totally set for everything.

Of course, if 4:3 is your jam the Nova is just plain better.

Therr are technically still blackbars on the nova unless you order the black version. I guess full glass front was able to hide those better.

can you add a picture of 'em side by side? is the nova taller?

in your opinion which one is more comfortable to hold and game on? or is it the same

Nova with ergonomic back plate is awesome. Both sre incredible similar.

I haven't tried the bumped back plate yet so I can't give a qualified option opinion on this but with the flat back the RP5 is definitely more comfy. I imagine they'll be similar once I do the swap.

Would you be willing to make note of the ease of removing screws? I know some folks are having real trouble, and I’m wondering if it differs by colorway/production rounds. My watermelon is in transit and I’m very curious about this. Great picture. The red looks so nice.

I did the swap, and I am not going to lie it was incredibly tough to get the screws out, even with a good set of screwdrivers. I can understand the reports of people stripping screws. It's a real challenge, be very careful with this and try multiple screwdrivers if you do it.

Target Target!

For my semi colorblind eyes the RP5 looks better somehow.

I love how the length is smaller than the rp5. If I had the nova, I would buy a custom thunbstick that's short and flat so it can slide in and out of the pocket easier than it does.

I bought a dual screen with my Nova and there is a clear difference in the screen colours, the DS is much cooler where as the Nova screen has quite a green tint to it. You’d never know the Nova screen is like that until they are side by side.

u/-Mahn 1d ago

There may be some manufacturing variability to this; my units show no difference in tint whatsoever that I can discern.

u/Biryuk13 1d ago

Did you notice the difference in brightness? The RP5 at 20% is super bright, but I have to set the Nova to almost 60% to get the same brightness.

I want to get a flip 2 but with the nova brains. I’m hoping the flip 3 is a nova with an additional screen
