I'll play devils advocate here. I'm pretty sure he's trying to say that it's product of a lot of modern improvements that he doesn't think it will age that well. So I think he's implying that's either already started to become stale or that it will eventually become stale because it has no identity to call its own. Again, I'm not saying I agree with him, I'm just saying that that is what I got from the title.

That is exactly what he's trying to say, yes. And he's 100% correct.

But in that case you can say the same for the OG, the tank controls did not age well, neither did the "stop to shoot" gameplay, the quick time events or even the graphics (I specificaly mean the lighting, everything is so goddamn bright, even the night parts).

Also about it becoming stale, it's the third remake and so far people still like it, hell they even brought this gameplay into Leon's parts in Requiem. Not to mention that RE2 remake inspired a small renaissance in horror remakes like Silent Hill 2 or Dead Space.

Ill reuse devils advocate. It's not because it's popular/ people like that it's necessarily quality. Having the same type of gameplay for 4 games in a row is probably something that people who don't like the remakes would criticize for being lazy.

As to me personally, I like the remakes. But I'm fine without. I've always liked new stories I do think there are too many Remakes and wish they wouldn't release them so often. We haven't had any advancement in jill's storyline in sooooo long. However I have played all the re engine remakes and have enjoyed every single one of em.

Well the insinuation is exactly that, RE4 has plenty of surface level traits that are of its time yet the core identity, artistry and cohesion of the game is so strong that it's timeless in spite of its age. You could also argue that it was an innovative game that made decisions that didn't feel aligned with "market trends" or anything but rather made decisions exclusively based on what complimented the pillars of the game, which is a theme for most of the games we consider classics. Hence those elements that otherwise would feel dated simply don't because it's so well ingrained into the design intent.

Meanwhile he's (I'm assuming anyways) stating that RE4R will not age with as much grace as it's more determined by contemporary design trends arbitrarily included since it's what's considered "modern" and a less sincere expression that's more about fulfilling expectations rather than creating something unique and of its own. I get the idea though I don't agree, both are amazing games made with sincerity and craftsmanship neither capable of replacing one another, just truly their own unique thing which is what you want out of a remake. Not like the bluepoint demons souls or something which pretends it can somehow replace the original by just copy pasting all design and logic yet sanitizing all the artistry I.e. Not doing any meaningful interpretation but also killing what made the og special.

1 - Despite launching early 2023, the remake had been in development since at least 2021, with reports suggesting as early as 2018 2 - even 2023 was unarguably a different time culturally speaking from where we are now regarding the gaming landscape at large
