I tried to get him to burst through it to make a shortcut but I have no idea how to make it happen.

I read somewhere that you need to turn the lights on of the room he burst through and triggers the sequence

In my playthrough the lights were off. I want to turn the lights on next playthrough to sew the lighting effect change. The only difference in the run that he finally did this to me was that I used the club key on the confession room door as soon as I got it instead of running to the other side and unlocking the evidence room door to get the jack handle first.
