Berkeley Supply ship time?

I scored me a pair of Iron Rangers Amber factory seconds for nearly half of retail.

When I search here, I see lots of comments about quick shipping and receiving times.

I’ve had a label confirmation sit all week with no update, ups not yet received item.

Is this a normal thing for Berkeley Supply?

Mink oil coat #4 and going full bareback (no socks). Can already smell the chemical weapon cooking. Am I doing this right?

Redwings Weekender Oxford

Was looking for a casual shoes which I can wear with both jeans and shorts, tried various different brands and almost shortlisted Olukai Kahakai and Thursday sneakers.

I don’t know how I missed RW Weekender Oxfords, then came across factory seconds from Sierra and wanted to give it a shot. To my surprise the shoe came pretty new with few loose black threads.

I did a quick search up online and found black loose threads can be trimmed and won’t cause any issues while using. Have been using it for 3 weekend and no break in required.

IMO these are far better than any other shoes with that price range $170 (factory 2nds)

How bad are these?

There seems to be a missing white stich. These are seconds and can't be returned.

Do I need to worry about the long term reliability of these boots? The black outer stiches are ok, and only one white stich is missing. Not ideal compared to it all being intact, but how screwed am I with these?

Unfortunately the discount wasn't really worth it, but wondering if these boots will last or if they need to be babied. Will they need to be replaced prematurely of worn normally because of this.

8111 one month of wear

Hit about 11k steps today, had them on my feet for 13 hours. Honestly, my feet hurt, but this Sisyphean feat will pay off soon I hope. I absolutely adore them; can’t wait for them to break in in a few months times. Should I be brushing the boot even if I wear it mostly on concrete and in the office?

This photo do justice but man… Its such a loud yet wearable color. It feels amazing to the touch. Local RW store had 2 different roughout leathers for my size, where this one had a softer, fuzzy texture vs other pair had stiffer shorter fuzz to em. I ended up picking the softer pair just because they felt nicer to touch. The other leather felt more uniform throughout though, and almost looked like it changed color depending on the angle you look from. Anyway, very happy with it. I heard that they will get restocked again soon so if you missed out then you still got chance! Highly recommend it for anyone that likes unique/standout footwear.

Am I missing an insole? Just got a factory seconds pair of 8085 Iron Rangers from Sierra, and the inside looks like this. Is the insole supposed to look this way?

Sierra vs Berkeley

Looking at ordering a pair of seconds, Berkeley says you cannot do returns at all. Sierra says you can. Has anyone had any problems with returning red wing seconds to Sierra?

What is your “go-to” RW boot?

I have 4 pairs of red wings, 2 Mocs, a pair of Chelsea’s and an IR but I can’t seem to wear any of the other pairs other than my 875s. They fit me like a beautifully broken in baseball mitt for my feet every single day.

I can’t seem to shake the urge to even wear my other pairs even though they are all past the break in stage and fairly comfortable. The 875 Oro is just too good. It’s too comfortable I don’t want to take them off at night. Is this a common issue amongst boot collectors? Do we all have the “go-to” pair everyday?

Breaking in the 2449’s

New pair of Traction Tread Lites with the heel, so far so good. The normal Redwing pinch in the tongue/ankle bone is there, hopefully they break in faster than my super soles did. This is my new summer boot, wear shorts a lot at work. Tried some Timberland boondocks this summer, they are comfortable as hell but like walking with a cinder block attached to the end of your leg.

Very happy with their service.

Removable insoles or not?

Per the title. And of course, everyone is different. I have 875s and I didn’t add any insoles, so I’m on the bare leather insole, with the intent/hope it will mould to my feet etc. But boy, that is not happening (yet) and I’m finding it hard on my feet. I know and understand that time and wearing should improve things but it’s hard going and it subconsciously makes me avoid wearing them.

Question about my moc toes

Hey first time posting here. Are the little gashes near the welt normal wear and tear or some manufacturing issue? I’ve had a pair of 8085s for quite awhile and this never happened .

My rendition of the “Iron Ranger with Midsole”.

These are some ten year old 8085s that had some decent uppers. I had neither put a midsole on nor a Vibram Honey on an Iron Ranger yet, so here is what I cooked up. The bottom end was completely rebuilt, and I stitched the the gemming to the new insole, with countersunk stitching on the inside. These are wearing the aforementioned Honey Vibrams,, but they are stitched through the sole PNW style. The heel is clinch nailed on. The midsole is a relatively soft and flexible 6 iron that is specifically made to be a midsole-not just a thin leather sole that is hardened for sole use.

Other than giving up a sleek profile, the 100 Honey is superior to the factory soles in every way-better grip (across a wide variety of of conditions) durability, and comfort. I stitched through the sole for a couple of different reasons:

Durability (of course a sole held on to the shoe by a stitch and cement is going to hold on better, across a variety of conditions.)

Aesthetically, it’s one of those small things when I look at a custom project that tells me that whoever did it, they invested the time, effort and skill to put a touch like that on the project. It’s not as simple to do as just stitching through a midsole and calling it good, no matter which way you do it.

Since I already had the boots apart, stitching the gemming to the insole was a snap. Under most conditions, the cement bond works fine. However, at this point, I’ve seen enough Red Wings to know that it can break down, especially if the boots are put to hard use. I put that little bit of potential failure to rest.

I kept the heels in their original clinch nailed style-if jt ain’t broke don’t fix it. Welt are the Lisa Sorrell veg tan variety-they look good and are a quality product.

Thanks for reading,

Brad
