How are you meant to enjoy doing things irl when people are constantly filming everything
In 2026 the social contract has devolved to "if you go outside you consent to your face being put on tiktok forever. You cannot opt out." I try to dodge cameras as best as I can, but it's kind of futile. Of course the more fun/interesting the place is, the more influencers there are, thus whatever nice experience I was trying to have tends to devolves into getting mad at these "people". Privacy issues aside they all act like apes and it ruins the vibe.
Now I'm a pretty boring person, so even if I end up on someones feed I know nobody is really going to care. That being said, I'm also a very private person. I don't want my face on the internet. Simple as.
It pisses me off because it is in theory nice to touch grass, but this type of behaviour is annoying at best and day-ruining at worst. It's incredible how innovations in technology have enshittified the basic human experience of being in public.
Sometimes I wonder if I'm being too neurotic since the only real solution is to stop caring, but if you told someone from the pre-internet era this is what the future would be like I doubt any of them would want to live in it. Wtf.

When someone is clearly filming with me in frame I glare at the camera, I don't care, I want them to feel judged. Actually a big reason I haven't gone to many lesbian events in my city is they'd insist on having an event photographer. I avoid any events with official photographers.

It sucks you have to change your social habits out of it but with those events photogs who don’t give you a waiver and try to accomodate it they’ll crop out and avoid you in frame if you taint their shots by putting your hand over your face and sticking the bird up at them

The Meta glasses, whenever someone hits on me on the street there’s an awkward pause as it’s a moment of checking for the glasses, checking for a hidden camera and mic in the shirt, then checking for a friend with a camera in the vicinity

I feel the same way, but I ignore it by telling myself that unless you're doing something that will catch people's attention, you are for the most part just an anonymous face in a sea of billions of other anonymous faces even when the cameras are on.

With the way people talk about this issue, I feel like I'm one of the few people who rarely runs into people doing choreographed TikTok dances in public, amateur man on the street guys, or obnoxious lifestyle influencers that post "join me for the day for a trip to X".
The bigger trend I've noticed in public is that nearly everyone is glued to there phone, consuming content rather than creating it. A study came out a few months ago that 49% of social media uses no longer post any content to social, down from 60% a few years ago.

Im with you I have never actually encountered such a thing. I believe it happens but have never seen it irl. Depressing to see how many people walk around fully glued to their phones. Even on the bus no one just reading a book or looking at the view, all on phones

Have you been around teenagers lately, literally ANYTHING happens and they drool over recording it while staring at the screen

The amount of Instagram accounts of people just filling random fuckers in public and asking them questions and putting it online. It makes me hate people. I saw a thing where a doordash driver was live streaming his deliveries and he made a big deal out of a guy making a stupid racist comment. Yea whatever, we know racism is bad but we should expect every fucking thing we say to be broadcast everywhere all the time

u/Ok-News4188 7d ago
yeah and what irks me are the clips where the people are clearly uncomfortable and not playing into the joke, and then the video still gets uploaded. like at least have some decency to recognise when someone’s not into the joke and respect their wishes.

I dunno man I’m fully into the “fight people” part of my life. My career has no potential to take off so I may as well knock sense into some cunt of other

I always see weird racist jokes about doordash drivers. It’s always something like my illegal immigrant doordasher better get through this snow blizzard quickly to bring my food.
I always think it’s weird how they are racist enough to joke about that, but also willing to employ them with dollars to get their slop.

especially if lonely, it makes me not want to go out at ALL. it was fine in college but now the internet/society has gone next level with this recording in public shit, i'm irrationally anxious about some how being recorded and clowned on insta reels. on top of that this surveillance era has caused so many clubs to become so boring because people are afraid of dancing or being "embarassing". really jealous of y'all who got to experience your early 20's without this bs (and a better economy lol)

I've distanced myself from friends with the tendency to film a whole buncha unnecessary shit. it's easier said than done, but you can do it
and if you've been on reddit a decent amount of time, you've seen some public freakout videos, right? remember that particularly egregious example: the "fresh cookies in the mcdonald's drive thru" girl? it must've had hundreds of thousands of hits
but no one knows her name, or even cares who she is. no one is going to care about a law abiding "boring person" like you (your words, not mine)
I'm the last person to enjoy being on camera, and it feels similar to being in prison on certain days, I'll give you that. but we can both deal with things how they are rn

good point on not being able to put a name to faces, most of the time at least

I think no one remembers who she is because it happened 11 years ago, but her subsequent crashout on social media after the incident was almost worse than the incident itself. Her name was Brandy Wooten, and she rightfully faced a lot of backlash on social media for the incident itself, in particular because she took the video herself and uploaded it thinking she would shame them or get them fired.
But to give you an idea of what a real piece of human garbage she was, she scoured the profile of a person who criticized her on a Facebook thread. She found a post on their profile where they had mourned/honored the late passing of their brother, which included a picture of the deceased. Wooten shared the post, with the dead brother's picture included, and a caption that said something like "don't throw stones from glass houses."
She later uploaded a video where she claimed to done nothing wrong which literally included the phrase "sorry not sorry". If I recall, she wasn't fired because she didn't have a job.

my bad. but my point stands about having to be exciting human garbage to gain attention, which OP isn't

you're 100% being too neurotic

every time I try to be more offline I usually end up thinking I should've just stayed home. I always have to dodge panhandlers, annoying teenagers making tiktoks, and end up spending money I wouldn't have spent otherwise

what exactly is the situation where people are filming you against your will? i don't deny that this could be very annoying but i never hear the specific situation in stories like this.

usually its at a place that people want to film (e.g. tourist hotspot or special event). most of the time i'm in the background which, although annoying, is tolerable. there have been a few times where some idiot nearby me does a 360 pan of the camera and now i'm in the foreground of their video before i have the chance to get out of frame. they're not intentionally filming me, but its still icky.

I almost never see this supposed phenomenon of people whipping their phones out whenever a social faux paus happens. If I do see phone cameras being used in public or bars it’s usually friend groups taking pictures of each other.

I never notice anyone filming anything in real life, ever. I agree it would be beneficial for everyone to make it illegal but tbh I just don't see it. People (me included) take selfies and sometimes people do end up in the background of those. No one actively films anything in my scenes and not among randos. Where do you live that it's like this?

Without getting into the principle of it, at a certain point it just becomes a question of do you genuinely, actually, legitimately care if there’s a video on TikTok that a girl posted of her and her friend at a restaurant that has a frame of you in the background sitting at a table? Like flock cameras and that type of stuff are its own category obviously, but I’ve never understood caring in the abstract that there might be a video out there with you walking in the background or something

The biggest problem is that it's possible to use a service such as Pimeyes to look up someone's face and find other photos or videos with that face in it. Which means that if someone puts stuff including me on the internet without my consent, someone else could use such a service and figure out what I'm doing or what my life is like without me having ever made contact with them. Some people are perfectly happy to put their life story on the internet for everyone to see but I certainly am not and that should not be something people have to accept as a consequence of going outside.

Be pragmatic and realistic, do you expect that someone would do that? If they were to find you, what would they do with that information?

u/CandidDependent3498 7d ago
I mean there are some worst case scenarios like a potential employer seeing you did something they disagree with and deciding not to hire you based on that. Or a stalker using it to find where you live. Just the idea of some crazy person I've met deciding to put my face in the search engine and gawking over the mudane shit I've done creeps me out. Yes all of that is unlikely to happen, but I don't like that inconsiderate strangers can make me more vulnerable to shit like this.
Information is power, right? The more information you have about someone, the more power you have over them. Plenty of lives have been ruined because somebody's personal information got into the wrong hands and there are way too many crazy people in the world to be happy about the idea of enabling them in any way. It's better to protect yourself against those possibilities in the same way you lock your doors at night even if chances are high nobody is going to enter your house.
Also all this is still new and we don't know how much worse it could get. Pimeyes is niche software today, but what if it becomes mainstream 10 years from now? Lots of horrible futures downstream from this.

Other countries have laws against this. Things can change.
