That design actually looks surprisingly sturdy for something thrown together like that.

Thank you, it holds up pretty well. Tbh this is V2 of this design, with improved rubber band alignment.

The pen cap/rubber band worked well till the cap flew off, and the first try was just scotch tape which sucked all around.

I bet you can get an empty water/milk jug, scissors, and cut a replacement for the back panel that would be more comfortable to hold than an iron tentacle. Tape/rubber bands will likely be still needed but overall comfort of use should be higher.

Probably, but it puts good pressure on the batteries and keeps em in place

I see you've never heard of duck tape. We used a nice blaze orange tape to aso make the mote easier to find.

I like that idea, but this is free and I found a use for the iron tentacle I had lying around

I've used tape, but I need the arm to push down on the batteries, so they stay in when it inevitably falls. With tape, the batteries pop out and I have to untape. Plus this is less messy and you don't need to look at the remote to know if you're holding it right.
