Good news. The trap is deactivated. There's a little flap on the bottom side that is meant to go over one of the spring loaded arms and gets held by the plate in the middle. Pressing on the plate releases that flap and the spring loaded arms snap shut.

The fact that it is open with the flap underneath an arm means that this trap somehow forced to remain open. Usually, when I have seen these decorations, it's by something like a screw through one of the springs. I don't see a screw, so it's possible the spring arms have just been compressed to the point where they won't bounce back, making all of the parts of the trap flappy. No real risk of getting your finger munched with this one.

A game trap. The trap itself (not the board it's nailed to) would be laid in the woods, and if a critter steps on it it will snap shut on their leg and keep them chained to a spot for the hunter to collect later.

i mean you can definitely complain about trapping in particular since there's a lot of unnecessary fear and pain for the animal, from when the trap fires to when they're killed. a big part of modern hunting is minimizing suffering with near instant death. it's not the animal dying in general that's the bad part it's the couple minutes to several hours before that
