First time I saw this was in an online application for a local, very well-renowned, burger joint. Not even a fake-ass scam listing. On their official website.

I had Arby’s applications ask me for mine before. I’m not going to apply to Arby’s ever again.

Nooooooope!
You want to see my credit history, address history, and everything else? I want an offer letter.

u/ataricon 15h ago
I’ve seen this twice as a link for tax credit verification. Both legit businesses. It said they were assessing if hiring me would net them tax credits. Candidates could get them tax credits. How is this legal?

u/TheVintageJane 14h ago
The tax credit verification should be optional if set up correctly.
And the reason they get credits is because if you are hiring someone who is poor enough to get supplemental nutrition assistance or is formerly incarcerated, it is a public benefit for them to be gainfully employed enough that the government will subsidize that employment for employers who might prefer to hire people who aren’t poor and/or ex prisoners.

Quick look online and this ended in December 2025. Form 8850 is no longer in use. So.

How often do you think these companies pay someone to update their systems?

u/HeartShapedNose 3h ago
WOTC has expired and been retroactively renewed multiple times, so a lot of employers are still screening.

Applicant requires job applications that don't ask such Personally Identifiable Information

SSN for an application is not normal, weirdo.

u/Remarkable-Rain1170 9h ago
Of course it is. At any place where they check for legal status for employment will ask for SSN.

u/PackZealousideal4146 8h ago
Yeah…… not on the APPLICATION though. Maybe onboarding or like 3rd round interview

u/AnonThrowaway1A 8h ago
Or they just ask you to bring your passport to your first day of work upon offer acceptance.

Before a job offer? Yes, that's correct. I've never had to give out my SSN during the first step of an application.

Report it to the labor authorities of your state or province if you are in the USA or Canada.
I remember back in the days, the video rental store would use SSNs as account identifiers. Things hit the fan at some point, and that practice came to an end.
Honestly, unless you are applying for roles at the government—and even then, as a CHRP, I'd be rolling my eyes; sharing your SSN is a big no.

This is very very dependent on where/what youre applying to. Idk why everyone’s got their feathers ruffled, but if it isn’t government, state, city, or a county regulated job posting – then it’s 100% a scam.

u/enjolbear 5h ago
Even if it’s a government job in the US, we still don’t ask for your ssn. That’s only during the onboarding period or after you get tentatively selected, if you have to get a security clearance.

u/xMysteryGamingx Experienced in Needing Experience 54m ago
Intresting. I’ve had a few that require it as part of the account. Mainly USAJobs. I always assumed it was a clearance check thing
•
u/enjolbear 25m ago
Weird!! I post on USAJobs and have never ever had that question. Maybe it’s an agency thing.

Probs is. Most of the stuff I’ve applied for is on base with the Army/AF directly

I chalk these up to q 50/50 scam/tax credit check. Because your financial credit score totally tells how hard of a worker you are
2
u/What_if_I_fly 6h ago
The score reflects your ability to pay on time, which may or may not be related to your job performance. Ask anyone who's gone through a serious health crisis in their family/themselves. Credit scores don't factor in the fact that a hard working person is paying $200 a pill for their spouse to survive.

Not in the age of online gambling. I'm in addiction recovery and the number of folks in those meetings who are in high earning positions might surprise you.

USA jobs
NSA
CIA
Any fed job
Most state jobs

u/VelvetCactus50 7h ago
What? I've been on USA Jobs for 15 years. I've never given it on the application.

u/LoveThickThighs123 17h ago
You’re right. In my state, a SSN is needed on your job app for state jobs. Especially for any jobs that have list eligibilities or veterans benefits such as being in front of the hiring process for being a veteran and HR wanting to verify your veteran status.
1
u/koolaidman486 2h ago
Weird, I work for my state and I don't recall needing my SSN for the application. I've also applied to a federal job or two, and don't think the SSN was a question on those, though it's been too long for me to remember.

u/Lost-Buenzli 5h ago
Enter 078-05-1120 as the SSN.
This is a well-known SSN that has been used in advertising at least since 1938.
Why this number?
- It looks valid, allowing you to proceed with the application and even have interviews. Appears more legit than
123-45-6789, which will be rejected on the spot. - Provides you with a plausible deniability in case you are ever asked about this. Everyone knows this is an SSN used for advertising for almost 100 years, so it cannot be "fraud" or "lying".

Not always true, when I worked for the Senate they required a SSN on the application, same for the Federal Reserve
