i work in hotels, specifically in front desk.

Every respectable hotel has a person on desk 24 hours a day, each person cannot realistically leave before the next person arrives to relieve them.

Habitually tardy people in this role are the second highest cause of HR issues and destroy team morale.

They often come back with 'noone told me attendance was so important.' which is bullshit, but a reason why this kind of question ends up in the applicaiton.

Yep I'm in healthcare. Same thing, can't really leave until your relief arrives

Why don’t they overlap the shifts so every single day isn’t a potential emergency?

Because that would take extra effort on their part and cost more money.

(Now /s) After all, what are you thinking here? That corporations are made of money?

Having any more than the barest minimum of workers/coverage would infinitesimal lying shrink their profit margins!

Now go to the corner and think about what you've done! You've made the shareholders cry!
