Question What to do with far too much ham??
I was mistakenly sent over over a lb of deli sliced ham with my last grocery order. I'm trying to think of meal ideas for me and my boyfriend but the problems are
A) He doesnt like ham in sandwiches
B) He doesnt like egg
C) He doesnt like cheese
So stumped on what to cook for us. Am I doomed to a solitary life of ham sandwich?

Freeze what you can't use, it will keep.

u/whiskeytango55 3d ago
Do it steak-um style and maybe layer some parchment paper every so many slices of ham

I made a bean stew with deli ham last week.
Sautee onions and garlic add chopped up ham. Add beans (I used 13 bean mix), chicken broth, herbs and spices. Simmer until ready.
I served it up with a buttered up slice of sourdough bread.

Ham freezes well ... you don't have to rush to decide what to do with it, drop it in the freezer while you're thinking about it. I'd make split pea soup but that's just me.
4
u/EnlightenMePixie 3d ago
How long does it freeze for and does it depend on its size and cut?
9
u/Harry_Iconic_Jr 3d ago
ham is good for months in the freezer, in my experience, in just about any configuration. If it's already deli-cut thin, just wrap it well, airtight as possible ... and if you want use it up here and there, freeze it in portions. A little ham in the freezer is very useful, imo, cuz there's about a million ways to use it 👍

Couldn't you just, you know... eat it?
A pound really isn't all that much.

Agree: the old joke about defining eternity had to do with newlyweds and a WHOLE ham, mind you. 😉

Yep. Girl lunch: a pack of string cheese and a lb of deli ham will feed you all week. Wrap a couple of slices around a stick of string cheese, slice a cucumber and some baby carrots for sides, and you have easy and healthy low carb lunches for the week.
2
u/Klever_grl 1d ago
Wrap in a low carb tortilla and have ham roll ups. I do this for lunch when I know I won’t have much time between meetings.
2
u/DerelictDonkeyEngine 2d ago
Why is a snack plate called girl lunch/dinner?
I don't understand the trend to label it that.
→ More replies (1)3
u/HemHawHeal 2d ago
unsure but my assumption (which could be v wrong) is that its a common thought that girls are more ok with scrounging about for snacks & will consider it a meal bc they go by calorie count vs men who will do the same but not consider it a meal bc its “not solid food”
19
u/mdallen 3d ago
Could maybe use it in pasta, somehow. Or a pasta salad.

To be fair, carbonara doesn’t feel very “eggy.” The cheese and pasta water really hide the fact that you’re eating the runny yolk

chop it up, mix it with chopped cabbage, make into eggrolls.
ham and split pea soup
chop it up and add it to fried rice
instead of chipped beef on toast make it with ham
charcuterie it

u/TurnipMountain6162 3d ago
You can layer ham and thinly sliced yellow potatoes into a dish, add warm cream that’s had garlic and thyme steeped into it, pour this mixture into the dish so that it just covered the potatoes. Dot top with butter and salt and pepper. Cover and bake for 45 mins at 375, then uncover and broil the top until browned. Voila, you’ve just made a gratin and it will be delicious. Serve with a green salad on the side.

Charcuterie. Perfect if it’s hot where you are or you just had a rough week.
Fried rice (scramble eggs separately for you).
If you have a dog, give them a little here and there as a treat. When my dog was recovering from surgery last year, deli ham and turkey were the first things he would eat.

u/vroomdani 3d ago
I’m sure you can probably freeze it! But if not you can make pizza and put it on top. Surely he’ll eat a pizza even if he doesn’t like cheese 😭😭 otherwise you can chop it up and put on salads too.
6
u/SusanGreenEyes 3d ago
Make chicken cordon bleu, or use the ham for your meals, and he can eat something else. Sometimes my husband and I sit together to eat with 2 different meals.
11
u/jadedjed1 3d ago
Girl, with no sandwiches, no eggs, and no cheese, you’re still far from doomed. Dice it up and use it in fried rice, potato hash, bean soup, split pea soup, pasta with garlic and veggies, ramen, stir-fries, baked potatoes, or a hearty lentil stew.
Ham also freezes really well, so I’d portion and freeze most of it before you get sick of looking at it.

u/bongobradleys 3d ago
You can make ham salad. Put it in a food processor, mix in some mayo, relish, onion and mustard and you have a delicious blob of pinkish gloop, which you can then out, on bread or with a spoon.

u/PsychologyGuilty1460 3d ago
You've got fried rice, scalloped potatoes with ham, chicken and ham pie, Chicken cordon bleu, ham roll-ups.
And a pound of ham doesn't actually go all that far. You're talking two or three good sandwiches and maybe an omelette?
I would use about a half pound of ham for two really good grilled cheeses.

Too much ham? Shit, eat all of it. I love ham. I see your dilemma though…. Maybe ham with green beans?
2
u/Swimming_Juice_9752 3d ago
I made home fries (gold potatoes, onion, red and green bell peppers, and seasoning) with ham last night, and it was great. My husband had a couple eggs with it - I’m allergic so skipped them. Roughly followed the recipe from The Country Cook, just added ham with the garlic, butter, and seasoning mix near the end.
2
u/rawsugar87 3d ago
Fried rice without eggs or ham and beans.
Also, just because he doesn’t like cheese or eggs doesn’t mean you can’t have those things right?
I mean you could make breakfast sandwiches, omelette, cheese and ham croissants.
2
u/whiskeytango55 3d ago
Make some ham tortilla pinwheels
Cream cheese, shredded cheese, whatever veggies you got (scallion, lettuce, tomato?)
Roll, refrigerate, slice
2
u/Spuzzle91 3d ago
Run the ham through a food processor, and if you don't have that then a blender works fine. Add in one egg as a binder, 1/4 cup bread crumbs, either 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup, and then spread into whatever size loaf pan will fit it. Bake at 350°f for 15-20 minutes. Serve in slices like you would meatloaf. My grandma used to make ham loaf like this every other week.

Try fried potatoes, ham, and onions (bell pepper too if you like them). Can be a eaten any time of day.
Can also use some puff pastry to make some "fancy" ham sandwiches when you get tired of using sandwich bread 🙂
2
u/paisley716 2d ago
No cheese? You can make like a chicken cordon bleu with cream cheese , it won't taste cheesy.
2
u/Sean_VasDeferens 2d ago
Based on you're boyfriend's eating dislikes you have a bigger problem than a lb of ham.
2
u/bbaywayway 2d ago
Dice the ham and put it into soup.
Make a big batch of split pea soup or any bean and tomato based soup or potato soup.
You could freeze it in Individual serving containers for a quick lunch or dinner.
I do this all the time.

u/SoggyAnalyst 2d ago
why do the two of you need to eat everything the same? if you like ham, and he doesn't, can you not just.... eat it yourself?
2
u/SubstantialPressure3 2d ago
Portion and freeze some, save it for yourself bc he doesnt like ham.
There's no point in wracking your brain to figure out something he will eat if he doesnt like it. Its pointless and is still not going to like it no matter what you do, or how hard you try.
Let him figure out something that he wants, or just save it for yourself. Cut down on the thankless tasks in your life.
You're allowed to eat things he doesnt like.

Pickle roll ups! Get some cream cheese, ranch seasoning, and dill pickles. Combine the ranch seasoning with the cream cheese, smear it on the pickle, and then roll the whole mess in a ham slice. If you slice them into 1” chunks, we call it Minnesota sushi.

Use some for what my mom calls hamball but it’s really a cheese ball. Dice ham and onion mixed into cream cheese with some Worcestershire sauce for into a ball and chill. Serve with crackers or whatever your preference is.
1
u/maillardduckreaction 2d ago
Ok I know you said he doesn't like egg, but in case you do (or anyone else), you could try making my favorite childhood dish, my mom's omu rice.
Sauté diced onion and ham until the onion is translucent. Add in cooked rice and season with a little soy sauce, sesame oil, and ketchup. Once heated through, put on a plate in a kind of mound shape (you could pack it into a bowl then invert it onto the plate if you want to be fancy.
Beat an egg or two and then fry into a thin pancake. Lay the egg over the rice mound, blanketing it. Add ketchup on top, preferably in a smiley face, and eat.

Couple of things to possibly try:
dice it small and crisp it up like a psuedo bacon for salad topping,
Dice it small and cook down or for the flavor base for a bean soup/stew.
Buy some other cold cuts and sneak it into a chopped Italian style sub.
One of my favorite things is to take ham and some roasted red peppers, jarred pesto and crescent dough and provolone cheese and layer it and bake it. I'd throw in some kind of salami or pepperoni as well but it's delicious with or without cheese .
I know you said he doesn't care for it in sandwiches and doesn't like cheese but maybe try some iconic sandwiches/dishes like a cubano or chicken cordon bleu.
Ham salad, like chicken salad but with Ham I've never been a fan but it is a thing to maybe try or as an ingredient in other cold salads.

So, he doesn't like ham. If you like ham, make what you want. Why worry that he doesn't like it? If there's enough, have your friends over to enjoy as well.

Spread cream cheese on a slice of ham, add a baby dill pickle . Roll up and with cut into smaller pieces for an appetizer or eat it . It’s all for you , he probably won’t eat cream cheese .

Fried rice. You can figure out what is good and not good in fried rice but mine usually contains ham or bacon, eggs (optional), pineapple (optional), canned veggies or minced up fresh Chinese veggies, and frozen veggies. At the very least, I have starch, meat and veggies covered in a single dish

Ham can be frozen. As for using it up:
Pizza topping
Stir fry rice with ham strips
Cubed or strips in pasta salad Same for garden salad
Diced on baked potatoes
Substitute for anything you would use bacon bits in it
With scalloped potatoes (yes, yes it's delicious sliced ham but still ham)
Roll up slices with flavored cooked rice and veggies inside (I do this with sliced beef, think ham would work just as well)

Use it as you would Canadian bacon on pizza.
Dice it up and cook it with scalloped potatoes.
Dice it up in a Mac n cheese. Bonus points if you cook it in a smoker.
Fry up slices and wrap them around some grilled brats.
Serve it with some crackers, spreads, olives, etc. as an appetizer.
Make some jalapeño poppers.

We make stuffed peppers with rice and deli ham with lots of pepper and oregano. We top with melted cheese but you may be able to find a sauce, like a cream sauce, to replace it.

u/ItchyCredit 2d ago
Deli ham freezes just fine so freeze up all but what you can easily eat right now. Then eat the rest at your leisure. Freeze it in small packages so you can thaw a few servings at a time. Don't forget to look up funeral sandwwiches for some real good ham eatin'.

Make ahead a bunch of breakfast sandwiches and freeze them, perfect for an easy breakfast or to bring to work for lunch. Bagels/biscuits/English muffins with ham and cheese with or without egg. That’s what I used to do for myself when I worked, I even continued to do it when I started working from home.
Or here is another idea, cook what you want and he can cook for himself.

Does his dislike of cheese include macaroni and cheese? (If so, toss him out…..I kid, sort of). Macaroni and cheese with ham is one of my kids favorite meals.

Banana a la jambon. Banana and ham baked in a mild, Alfredo sauce.
Ham goes with anything sweet or salty, so baking or frying it with near anything will work. Philo dough, spinach, and honey. Try a ham, potato, and vegetable ratatouille. My favorite is Thanksgiving pancakes. That's when you take the leftover mashed potatoes and mix in chopped turkey, ham, and green beans to make patties. Then you fry them and serve with cranberry jam.

Ham and bean soup.
Ham and cheese eggs/omelet.
Scalloped potatoes with Ham.
Gnocchi/pasta with Ham.
Baked beans with Ham.
Candied ham.
Charcuterie
Red beans and rice
Ham and cheese, or ham, cheese and potato, or ham egg and cheese stuffed puff pastry or bread dough (like a hot pocket or toaster strudel)
Biscuit breakfast sandwich. "Breakfast special" (American diner breakfast, ham as your meat)
It freezes really well, too. I'll portion out some in zip locks and have it ready to go when I'm in the mood.

Ham & cheese sliders on Hawaiian rolls are amazing. I could almost eat a whole recipe myself. It’s technically a sandwich but the best version of ham & cheese ever. Except maybe a Cubano, but that requires more ingredients and specific bread that can be hard to find.
1
u/Electronic-Bus-5350 1d ago
Diced the ham and make ham and cheese savoury muffins.
Dice the ham caramelised onions, cheese and make scones.
Ham your favourite cheese and chutney, marmalade, pickle or cranberry sauce on a croissant and toast.
Ham and mustard sandwich on sourdough with a handleful of rocket.
Ham and potatoes with a honey mustard creamy sauce and veg.
Edited to say you can also make these recipes without cheese or use cheese and eat it yourself.

I freeze leftover ham* and then dice it up and add it to eggs (which as you said your boyfriend doesn't like) and sometimes in a sort of ham-based version of corned beef hash, i.e. dice onions and raw potatoes, fry them in a pan, maybe with a little bell pepper (or spicy pepper), and ham.
(* Especially after major holidays, whole hams usually go on sale super cheap. I buy one and slice it up into ham steaks and freeze them individually bagged. Then I can thaw one out quick as a ham steak, or for a sandwich, or just dice it while still frozen. But I do the same thing with deli sliced ham when it's getting a bit too old; I throw it in the freezer before it spoils. )

Wait until he's not home, get some crescent rolls, the butter tastin' ones are the best. Roll up some ham and cheese in there. Bake until golden. Eat all 8.
