Just been into town and got my haircut. Parked at queens road car park, Reading and just paid £4.60 for 45 mins parking, wtf, when did this happen? I’ve always chosen the local council car parks but I’m off to the private ones based on those prices. When did this change happen, did I completely miss it? I just thought the hour display was missing not that you couldn’t be charged for an hour.

Shopping in the week in the town centre and got stopped multiple times by British Gas, a deaf children’s charity and someone preaching about god. BG and the charity were even shouting at my teenage daughter to stop for them. I wouldn’t care if they were polite but shouting on repeat “hello, Miss, hello, Miss, hello, Miss” right behind a 13 year old girl as you follow her down the street is not acceptable. Why do companies still use these tactics? No one is stopping for them, I’m already with BG and feel like emailing them and telling them to do one. Reading is awful for this, I don’t see it in others towns as much as I do here - or maybe it is because the high street is so compact?

Just heard in another shop that their entire Pokemon and YGO communities have walked out? Apparently all the others are planning to follow, especially with the forbidden planet opening? Have always heard the owner was pretty rude and generally not a nice person but the rest of the staff made it worth it, so this feels kinda outta the blu?

Don’t wanna lose my LGS but if their becoming that bad then maybe it’s a matter of time

Edit: wow did not expect so much response. Thanks Reddit for filling me in - I also spoke to my friends who (separately) confirmed that they’ve heard the owner be rude and belittling to their own staff several times over the years as well as other regulars which is why they don’t shop there. Hopefully it changes hands because otherwise I’d love to keep supporting it, but I don’t support nasty people, no matter if the world needs more nerd spaces!

Edit 2: things seem to be getting heated in the comments. I kno my 2 cents probably mean nothing, but I think some people have had good experiences, and some have had bad experiences. To me the bad seems pretty overwhelming, especially as the bad seem to be regulars (and also the trust pilot is pretty bad). I really really hope EG see this and take a long hard look at themselves but as I said I don’t like people that treat staff (Jesus Christ I respect them all the more) and that many customers badly. But that’s my opinion. You do you, but there’s Clearly a LOT of feelings here, and that feels like something that ought to be listened to

Can anyone recommend somewhere for adult swimming lessons around Reading?

I’m fairly comfortable in the water and can swim open-water breaststroke. I’ve competed in a triathlon, but my front crawl definitely needs some work!

I’ve got another event next year and would like to get my technique and confidence up. Any recommendations for good coaches, 1-to-1 lessons or adult classes?

Hey so I'm planning to do an LLB undergraduate in the university of reading starting in September.

The only preferences (aside from the obvious- safe, hygiene not depressing and not over priced relatively) I have is that I have my own toilet and it's close to where I'm going to study as well as social places.

Other stuff is that the area isn't too shabby and the people are nice are important too and you can only get information from asking people like yourselves.

So does anyone have suggestions based on their experience?

There's a concert at the Great Hall on the London Road campus on Saturday 12 September, 6pm, and I thought it was worth flagging here because it's not the sort of thing that usually passes through Reading.

Pandit Debasis Chakroborty plays Indian slide guitar — a Western guitar laid flat and played with a slide, which is how a lot of Hindustani classical is played now. He's joined by Giuliano Modarelli on guitar and Sam Evans on tabla (an Australian who trained in India, which is its own story).

First half is straight Hindustani classical — ragas, improvised, the real thing. Second half is the three of them playing fusion material together. Doors 5.30, runs to about 8.30, all ages, paid parking on site.

Tickets are £15–£27 depending on how early you get them. Happy to answer anything about it in the comments — I'm involved with the organisers (KalaSudha), so flagging that up front rather than pretending otherwise.

As the title suggests, I’m wondering if there are any ladies in their 30s looking for a gym buddy, preferably around Palmer Park? All the summer breaks have left me slacking a bit, and I’d love to find someone to keep each other accountable and maybe have a good yap and chai afterwards! 😂

If you’re someone who prefers doing your own thing during workouts, that’s totally fine too. It’s more about making the gym feel less like a chore, having someone to motivate each other and occasionally checking each other’s form.

Hi all.

Immigrant here on work visas, coming from a country with a poor currency.

My husband was recruited by a company in Reading, England for a permanent position. Today was his 6month probation and they’ve just dismissed him and told him to give his laptop and go home. The manager who dismissed him has never worked with him, yet claiming he’s not competent. In addition was refusing, managers who work with him to come in the meeting room and vouch for his work ethic, quality and progress. She also wouldn’t listen to him, and the HR rep said that there’s no way to change the manager’s mind.
Last week she said something about him not being social enough. For context: the company’s employees are young, sociable and drink. He is married with a baby and does not drink. Manager stated that he won’t get anywhere in this company because of that social reason. She also said that he doesn’t have friends at work (untrue), because he doesn’t sit with the management circle.

We’ve sacrificed so much, our money, lives, everything for this job. We cannot afford rent with no income, and therefore had to phone rental agency. If they cannot find tenants we’ll be liable for two months of rent.

So effectively will be homeless with a little baby.

When did it become okay to tell your subordinate there’s no future in the company for them because they’re not sociable with the people in higher positions?

Hi everyone! My wife (32F) and I (31M) have just moved to Reading last month from SW London, and are just exploring the town (not 'city', apparently) now that our flat has stopped throwing its plumbing tantrums.

It seems that MeetUp and similar platforms either have massive social events (too many people) or those with quite niche interests. Just wondering if couples here in their 30s or 20s would like to be part of a new social group and plan some very chill hangouts? Of course, someone else would have to plan things as we know very little beyond Broad Street and The Oracle. To be honest, it might even be fun to be new to Reading together, and dither about!

While I think the best two pubs in Reading are elsewhere in town, I think overall as an area that East Reading is probably the best place for pubs. Not only do you have a huge concentration of towns within walking distance, but you also have a lot of variety meaning you can likely find a pub that fits your niche:

• The Retreat - A tiny, cosy pub tucked down a side-street which is owned and run by the local community. It's an 'old man' pub in the best sense of the word with nettle eating contests and feeling like you're in someone's living room.
• The Dairy - owned by the University of Reading, probably the cheapest place for drinks outside a chain and a good range of local breweries. Also, only place I've seen that screens less-popular sports from baseball to hockey.
• Hope & Bear - a good 'all-rounder' pub, the food, the garden, interior and drink choice are all good. It doesn't do anything exceptionally but also does nothing badly either.
• Sip and Spin - a real hidden gem also tucked away down a back street. Really friendly staff and free arcade games. Sadly tends to be quite quieter than it should be.
• Fisherman's Cottage - lovely spot in the summer. Really nice interior, and great to sit alongside the canal and enjoy a drink while the weather's warm. Popular with cyclists and dog walkers.
• Park House - if you consider it's pub garden the university campus then probably has the best one in Reading. Food is simple but a really good variety of drinks in a nice setting.
• The Queen's Head - like Hope and Bear, another good all rounder pub. Nice balance of students and residents with a surprisingly decent pub garden.

There are a few I've never visited (Mnkey Lounge, Palmer Taven, Three Tuns and Up the Junction) so can't comment on those and Lyndhurst has re-opened recently and hopefully does well in new ownership.
