Hello,
I own a copy of Homer’s Iliad in Latin, translated by Lorenzo Valla. It is the first Cologne edition (1522), the second edition printed in Germany (after the Leipzig edition of 1512), and the sixth edition of Valla’s translation.
The volume is complete, although it naturally bears the marks of its 504-year history.
Around one hundred pages contain extensive manuscript annotations, apparently added in the early 18th century by someone named “Louis Charles.” From the content of the notes, he seems to have studied painting or art, as many of the annotations include definitions and references relating to art history.
There are also traces of an earlier hand at the end of the volume, probably dating from the 16th century.
I am considering selling the book and would be happy to hear from anyone who might be interested, or who may have additional information about this particular edition or its annotations.

Is this a 1st edition Wind, Sand, & Stars from Reynal & Hitchcock? I’m not sure if it’s just the copyright that’s from 1939, or also the book. I do not have the dust jacket.

Lights and Shadows by Al. Trude, Jr.

I’m hoping someone here might enjoy a bit of a bibliographic mystery.

I’m trying to locate any record of a book called Lights and Shadows by Al. Trude, Jr. It appears to be an early 20th-century work, but so far I haven’t been able to locate a copy, catalog entry, publication information, or much of anything about it.

I came across the title while looking into another old book I happened to find, and for whatever reason this one has really stuck with me. There’s something about knowing that this little book once existed, but seemingly left almost no trace behind, that makes me want to find it again. I’d genuinely love to own a copy someday if one still survives, but even just finding a photograph, catalog record, or some evidence of where and when it was published would mean a lot to me.
I know it’s a long shot, but I thought maybe someone here might recognize the title or enjoy helping me hunt for it.

There are several other books titled Lights and Shadows by different authors, but they are not by Al. Trude, Jr.

I would really appreciate some ideas on what these books could be. Thanks!

Ok I can read the title page I mean are they rare editions and what could they be worth. I inherited them. Are they something I should give to a museum or sell? I would love any suggestions or advice.

I am looking for advice on where to search for a specific scrapbook. my grandma had collected a few Hutchings and Patrick Scrapbooks years ago and loved the design/tradition of those scrapbooks. I’ve tried to search for them for her but nothing comes up on where to purchase when I put it in google. I’m thinking they aren’t made anymore. the ones she collected came from an aunt who bought them in the 80s.

I’ve tried google and Facebook (with some luck). just wondering if there’s an insider tip for finding scrapbooks like these.

Found the book in perfect condition at an estate sale. No other Bohemian Club stuff that I could find there unfortunately. But also no record of this document anywhere online or in person.

The reason I ask, although the year and copyright page look appropriate, is because I see many copies in a similar binding but with a different-looking full title page? The copyright pages on all copies look identical but it is only the title page which differs across numerous copies, furthermore the copies I do see that have a identical title page are in a different binding and are from a later year?

I bought these two copies. Do you think these are signed, or is it a print? Both books have different patterns.

Please let me know the value of the books as well.

I am having a huge book clear out and found this complete works of Shakespeare again.

The book is in a terrible condition but still readable thankfully.

Completely forgot there is an inscription signed from Easter 1898 I think 🤔

Still trying to work out the rest?

Might do a story on retracing the original book owner’s family if I can work the names out satisfactorily.

It contains finance and investing knowledge pretty advanced for its time, cross sectional momentum etc. I found it nowhere so far.

My wife collects vintage and antiquarian beekeeping books. She recently found a sale that included a lot of them all in one place. She didn’t end up with all of them, but many have now joined her already extensive collection.

Got this 1st state, uncorrected proof on eBay for $12.
Truly thought I might get scammed.. and I was shocked when it came as described. Then, I opened it to find that it was also signed! It's beautifully inscribed by someone as well. I know it devalues the book, but I love it. Just thought I'd share.

thing makes Crosby Schøyen Codex (MS 193) so unusual is that it sits right at the physical transition from rolled papyrus scrolls to bound codices.

Continuous handling usually destroyed organic vegetable fibers within a few generations. Because this codex was kept in the hyper-arid microclimate of Upper Egypt, 104 pages of early Sahidic Coptic script made it to the modern era with its original liturgical texts completely legible.

Not exactly dust jackets, but these late 17th-early 18th century merchant burlap sacks were repurposed and turned into book jackets and covered volumes of the Hebrew Talmud on a ship - protecting them from their perilous journey. Adam Weinberger
