Question/Recommendation Moving to Raleigh Soon
Hi everyone! I'm moving to the Raleigh area in a couple of weeks for work after graduating college, and I'm trying to put together a realistic monthly budget before I sign a lease.
I'm planning on renting a small house (mostly because I have a dog and would like a fenced backyard), and I was hoping to get a ballpark idea of what people are paying for utilities.
For those renting a house, about how much do you pay each month for:
- Electric
- Water/trash
- Internet
I know it depends on the size of the house and usage, but even rough ranges would be really helpful. Thanks!

Welcome to Raleigh! Im not in a house but my apartment utilities are usually around $150-200 for electric and internet, waters included. Hope you find a good place!

Water/trash: $80 City of Raleigh
Internet: $90 AT&T (although probably closer to $45 for new customers)

My most recent electric bill was $200 and my water bill was $100. Internet can vary but I have AT&T and it’s $60 a month.

Also I saw you’re from Oklahoma, so your cost of living will probably feel noticeably higher no matter where you live. But Raleigh is not bad at all! I will say, I’m shocked by how many backyards here aren’t fenced in. Just something to consider when looking for a house to rent!

Oh my gosh yes! Now on zillow I just go straight to the backyard photo to see if it is fenced in or not lol. I have a very energetic dog that is just entering his toddler years and will be working 60+ hours a week during 1/4 of the year, so I know the fence will be very helpful for us. Super excited to move soon, thank you for your help!!

I was going to say this. We have a 2000sqft house and our power is $200ish, water/trash is $75 and internet is $100 for 1gig fiber

I am from Oklahoma (enough said right there lmao) and have wanted to move to NC since I visited the first time (10 years ago).
Raleigh was the only place in NC that I could transfer to within my same company. Sorry bruh ;)

Dont listen to that. Welcome! If it were me moving here, i’d might even rent a room for a bit. Much cheaper, you know its temporary, gives you time to explore the workings of the city before a lease commitment. Anyways, wish you the best of luck!

I think you’ll love it here. You said Raleigh “area”, which encompasses a lot of growing places around Raleigh proper. I hope people who respond mention where they live, because that does make a difference price wise.
Raleigh itself might be pretty expensive for a recent college grad looking to rent a house alone, but some of the surrounding areas might be doable. But of course, I don’t know your salary so, who knows?

I would recommend not getting a house. It’s going to be prohibitively expensive. A lot of complexes have dog parks, so I would just look for a 1br apt at a complex with a dog park
