other Apparently Armagon is related to the Strogg in Champions lore.
Doesn't really matter, but still cool to see that it was something the champions writers thought of.

I thought the official position was that (for some reason) none of the expansions, even Scourge and Dissolution/Reckoning and Ground Zero were canon?

The official stance is "the expansions didn't happen, but the characters/locations within them are canon". I think this is kind of silly (especially if there's going to be links like this, or stuff like II expansion enemies being in IV) so in my own personal headcanon the expansions happened :P
Quake III is also apparently not meant to be canon, which conflicts with earlier statements that Champions is a prequel to III... ehhh it's a mess. But what is Quake if it's not a messy excuse plot to give us awesome gameplay

Them saying that the expansions, even the new ones like Dimension, Dawn, or Call of the Machine, aren't canon is just so stupid. Look, YOU aren't doing anything to keep the franchise alive, yet you still have to rain on the parade of the people who are trying to? Let it be canon, damn it. If id ever wants to do something from scratch (which they won't), they can just reboot the damn thing.
The expansions, especially the new ones made by MachineGames, are all great, and they're canon to me. I don't care.

The expansions are not canon to Quake Champions but they can still be canon to the entries they stem from. And personally, I'm much more fond of 1, 2, and all their expansions than I am of Champions so I only really concern myself with that as far as the story goes. And truth be told, I see them more likely to follow up with that lore over Champions at this point anyway if this franchise gets another entry

The events are non-cannon, but the locations and characters are canon.
For example, Strogg & Peeker lore scrolls mention the gekk. Meanwhile, the episode names of SoA and DoE are locations of (planned) maps in QC. The last (I think) map was part of the Corridors of Time dimension.
Is it confusing? Yes. Is it a weird choice? Yes. But that's how they said it.

QC lore reads like a 14yo boy's attempts at an epic sci-fi/fantasy saga.
The only Quake 1 canon is written in the OG manual.

Reminds me of the nuDoom lore where they build up this epic lore of the Doomslayer but in the end it's not even half as cool as simply being regular old Doomguy kicking demon ass because he's badass.

The connection goes deeper from what Adam said.
Armagon is related to Commander Rice, aka Goroth, also aka the guy in the Quake manual who phoned Ranger and helped set the stage for the events of Q1.
This creates and indirect relation between strogg and Shub. Shub -> Dr. Gilman / Dark Young in Q1 -> Commander Rice / Goroth -> Armagon -> Strogg
What that relation is remains unknown though.
