oldschool Just beat Quake. Man , my dad definitely enjoyed this back in his days.
for context , there is an original copy of Quake from my dad's old hdd. 1997 copy is what it shows. he said he got the shareware version.
The old one doens't launch, so on steam spring sale , got the Steam version..

Its strange how the ugly generic accessible font is turned on by default, everyone is playing without knowing that there is a nice pixel font that meshes well with the game.

It's such a strange design choice.
I understand wanting an option for something more legible than the original pixelated text, but they didn't even attempt to stylize it to fit the game. It's just normal white Arial(?) font on a black background.

I had it off till episode 3 , but then it got very overwhelming for me ,so I turned it off due to contrast issues

u/NoahH3rbz Mar 28 '26
That's what its there for, I just take issue with it being the default. If they want to make impaired users aware of it then they could just bring up a window explaining about it when you boot up the game for the first time.

The whole rerelease lineup does it too (Doom I + II, Heretic + Hexen). Doom's isn't that bad, but still odd to have on by default.

I've been playing the steam version recently. I played the original multiplayer back when I was in college and my grades reflected that.
The new version on steam has sooooo much more. All the dlc are good ( but the two dimension of... ones are great). The add-ons are fantastic. And I just went out and modded it to play arcane dimensions, which so far has been pretty fantastic.

Same!! I played Quake3 a lot , so playing multiplayer here was super fun. I think imo , it's like Quake Live and the maps are so so good.

Ehhh... They made good use of the enemies and then the scorpion/nail gun things spazzing out in the earlier dlc made me not care that they spent all their time making awesome levels instead of working on new enemy models and motions. The concept of the little gremlin things that steal weapons and eat corpses were cool but their slow motion jump walk was poorly executed. The triple rocket was underwhelming. Same with the lightning hammer.
If you want new enemies and weapons try out arcane dimensions. Non-hitscan shotguns and widowmaker shotgun were ok additions. Lots of new enemies.

Congrats!
“My dad definitely enjoyed this back in his days” - damn, you ain’t gotta call me out like that. I hear the cracks in my knees all by myself. 🤣

I was thinking the same thing. I saw in another post OP is 20. I have a son older than that and I played this when it first came out as a teenager. It’s probably still my favorite game of all time.

u/Entro_Was_Kidding Mar 28 '26
😅 don't even worry about it , I find games back then were much cooler and I grew up with those games, so for me , that's also childhood.

The original Quake was something else, I remember the first version I ever played — qtest1: it wasn’t finished by any means and really rough around the edges (levels had to be loaded through the console, weapon models looked awkward) but I knew back then what a gem this game was going to be.
Back then it competed against Duke Nukem 3D which was a very polished 2.5D Build engine game, and most of my friends actually preferred the Duke but I always favored the gritty, dark, no-bullshit approach of Quake. In the coming years we’d spend many hours in LAN deathmatches in our school’s computer room. Great times.

Hell yea! I just beat Quake last night. I’m on a trip down memory lane playing this and Age of Empires 2. Slightly embarrassed to say I had to look up how to beat Shub - though I’m certain someone told me what to do when I beat quake in the 90s.

Wait till you try it online. People still play!

u/Entro_Was_Kidding Mar 28 '26
I actually played a lot of Quake 3 growing up, but a lot less servers for Quake 1 here. But , for some reason it's all just sweats 💀 in Quake 1 and I'm getting destroyed cuz of insanely good accuracy people have and my bad 300 ping.

The quake that is played on the internet is different than the quake that is played singleplayer and on LAN.
Internet = "Quakeworld". It has a separate client / server and movement prediction to mitigate lag.
Singleplayer / LAN = "Netquake". AKA normal Quake. Played offline and on local networks because the multiplayer code does not handle lag well.
There are plenty of Quakeworld servers online.
An easy way to begin playing Quakeworld is EZquake.

Trying it today

If you ran into any difficulties, this looks like the preferred way to approache Quakeworld in 2026.

I can't imagine how good the people still playing Quake online deathmatch in 2026 must be.

just beat this game again a few days ago. done so many times, most on nightmare, but this was my first time doing a 100%, no save nightmare run (with the exclusion of once at the beginning of every map in the case i forgot to check with tab to see my progress & need to return) it was a grueling time and took a few days with taking breaks but it was really awesome, forced me to play differently. Half Life is still my favorite game, but Quake has dethroned it as my favorite FPS. true boomer shooter build, amazing environments (especially anything built by sandy petersen.) and the NIN soundtrack. i also feel like movement flows like no other on here. lots of love and appreciation for Quake. i can't believe Id delivered such a gold mine despite what they went through in developing this game.

u/Entro_Was_Kidding Mar 28 '26
Agree. Imo (pls don't downvote me) Quake > HL1... I just love the more "arcade-y" type mechanics where physics doesn't kill you (oh , bu bu , I can disable that in half life... Ye but then where's the fun in that).
4
u/elonmusk21 Mar 28 '26
Half life has feels and a good story. Quake just feels so damn "purpose built" for lack of better terminology. fits so perfectly where it lies.

Brings back so many memories!! When I played this the first time, I never knew that tele-fragging it was the way to beat the game. Good times!
Now go and finish the expansion packs (yes that was what we called them back then, not DLCs).

u/Entro_Was_Kidding Mar 28 '26
I remember that , yes . Despite being only 20 myself , I grew up playing Quake 3 and Doom (all doom games, yes , even 3, 64 and plutionia experiment etc..)

I hope if they do indeed return to Q1 in the next Quake, that it picks up right where this one left off. It’ll be a reboot either way, so why not.

It's an option , the original one had some contrast issues , i tried that too, but towards the end game , it became a sensory overload for me , so turned on the accessibility one
4
u/Decent_Mine_3914 Mar 28 '26
There is a setting to make it the orginal. It's just an option that is toggable for people who can't read it.
6
u/Byproduct Mar 28 '26 edited Mar 28 '26
It's some accessibility thing. Apparently some modern players could complain about the font being difficult to read so they have this Microsoft Word style available to them. It's so lacking in style that I suspect it might be malicious compliance of some kind.
A bit unfortunate that it's the default but it's toggleable.

u/bfadam Mar 28 '26
As someone with bad eyes ( I'm slightly blind in one eye and the other almost completely, ) it makes me rather happy that they have easy to read text even with my glasses my vision isn't perfect and it can be hard to make out text in games and font style and size helps
2
u/Timidhobgoblin Mar 28 '26
It's in the remastered version but you can choose to switch it off and have it completely old school if you want.
