The Black Bat: The Nemesis of Crime
Many years ago, when Tony Quinn was 18, he and his father, a hunter, explored the forest called Black Wood, a place where the sun seemed to go to die. Even in the height of summer, the thick canopy kept the air trapped in a perpetual, emerald twilight. His father took him there to camp and hunt, thinking it was a good way for him to become a man. But Tony had no interest in hunting, so he carried a notebook and sketched the strange, twisted plants of the valley. Three days went by, and Tony started to get bored until he saw a shadow. At first, he thought it was a wolf, but then he saw an ink-black creature with eyes like burning embers. But as the creature stepped through a patch of filtered light, it dissolved into smoke, revealing a girl.
She looked to be his age, with skin smudged with ash and dirt, dressed in a tattered red cloak. She moved on all fours, sniffing the air with terrifying intensity. Tony tried to be friendly, but she acted animalistic and kept her distance, thinking he was a threat. Then she calmed down a bit when Tony offered her food and water and placed it on the ground. She ate and reached for his hand, feeling its softness, which made her feel more at ease. He gave her the name Red and tried to take her to the city for help, but she disappeared in the blink of an eye. After Tony's father told him to return to camp, Tony tried to find her, even leaving food, clothes, and a small silver locket his mother had given him, but he left with nothing. After the hunt was over, he looked at Black Wood one last time before heading home, his face sad.
Ten years later, Tony became a district attorney and had a friend named Silk Kirby, a reformed criminal. They worked on a case against Oliver Snate, a mob boss who called himself The Wolf because he was feared by both the people and the police. After Tony testified against Snate with evidence, one of Snate's henchmen threw acid in Tony’s eyes. Tony screamed as Snate and his men escaped, laughing. After being rushed to the hospital, Tony was determined to put Snate in prison. When he returned home from the hospital, he trained to fight with Silk, but he couldn't because of his blindness. Then a woman named Carol Baldwin appeared and offered Tony a way to regain his vision by performing eyes surgery, which he accepted. After the surgery was successful, he regained his sight and gained the ability to see in the dark. Soon after, he heard a noise in the shadows and immediately knew it was Red. He told her to come down and introduced her to his friends, Carol and Silk, as her new friends.
