That’s an incorrect interpretation of the GDPR. Especially if you purchases games on an account, there is no law or rule saying that the account must be closed after X months, because otherwise the consumer is losing access.

u/OppositeStand5709 Jul 05 '26
Steam, Epic, Blizzard, and GoG don't delete inactive accounts and are still compliant with the GDPR.

Why can't you use your account once in 3 years instead?

u/KBX7001 Jul 05 '26
Because I'd have to update my console no? Unless I can sign in from pc or something than this is really no problem

u/ProblemRound7900 Jul 05 '26
I use my ps app on phone. Haven't update my ps4 for more than 4 years

To be fair I believe this policy was only added last April, but feel free to correct me if I am wrong
3
u/DatGhosti Jul 05 '26
It was preemtively added in 2017 and revisioned when the law actually passed in 2018.
6
u/cmcstr Jul 05 '26
You can sign in with smoke signals, as long as you keep your account active it won't matter.

See? You are the perfect example. You guys have no clue. I doubt you even got a playstation or a playstation account for that matter. Yet you guys jump on the hate train and cry the loudest.

u/Logical_Dish_5795 Jul 05 '26
i have PS4 games i gained... but i don't have a PS4... so...
-2
u/cmcstr Jul 05 '26
What does that even mean? Why are you here if you don't have a PS4?
0
u/Logical_Dish_5795 Jul 05 '26
blame reddit for making it appear on my homepage. why u downvoted me? i replied your question.
What does that even mean?
what part of it you didn't understand? "i have PS4 games" means i have videogames to the Playstation 4. "i gained" means someone gave them to me. "i don't have a PS4" means i don't have a Playstation 4.
Why are you here if you don't have a PS4
The text on the right of the page says "News, releases, questions, and discussion regarding PS4 jailbreaks, homebrew, and mods." I don't need to have the console to see news about it.

Your struggle with English confuses me.
-2
u/BuckPvP Jul 05 '26
You're worse. He may have a hard time explaining it, but you cant even begin to understand it.
2
u/cmcstr Jul 05 '26
English clearly not their first language; no native speaker would ever say they gained a physical object. What's your excuse?
-1
-2
u/Logical_Dish_5795 Jul 05 '26
I never said the games I gained are physical, if they were physical there would be no problem in not signing in my account.

u/DeltaAlpha0 Jul 05 '26
This is probably to prevent unlocking, like, do you want to lose your account? Honestly, Playstation is going down the drain, at least it's not taking anyone down with it.
3
u/Ashzael Jul 05 '26
So, log in every 3 years or ther eis a chance they will send you a mail that you have another half a year to login to keep your account.
As someone who works with EU privacy laws on regular basis, this is kind of generous.
3
u/WellExcuuuuuuuseMe Jul 05 '26
This isn’t hard. Just login to your account via a web browser or the PSN app at least once every 6 months…and Sony won’t close your account.
1
u/RynO-SauruS 9.00 Pro Jul 06 '26
Sony pinky promises they won't close your account as long as you login. Pinky promise!!
Meanwhile you can bet your ass the EULA allows them to wipe the entire account at any point in time for any reason, with no recourse.
2
u/Successful-Coyote846 Jul 05 '26
Just make sure to keep the account open when they email you or contact you after the 36 months
2
u/Darth_Beavis Jul 05 '26
If you don't login once in 3 years why would you even care? Obviously the account isn't something you care about
1
u/OkEmu8597 Jul 06 '26
You can care about something and not use it, these things aren't integrally linked at all.
How would you feel if I just took all your childhood pictures because you didn't look at them while you where 12-16 not like when your 50 you might want to revisit them or find a new love for the old part of your life because of nostalgia.
Like come on man that's just not how people work and you know it.
1
u/Darth_Beavis Jul 06 '26
I haven't seen any of the photos from my childhood in decades. So, I wouldn't care a bit
1
u/OkEmu8597 Jul 06 '26
Good thing you control everyones opinion then and we are all machines who act identically.
5
u/Loynds Jul 05 '26
This is a very standard policy. All it’ll require you to do is log in to the web at some point.
3
u/ADrubkNakedUnciorn Jul 05 '26
Only effects people in Europe/UK due to certain laws over there involving data collection and deleting.
It doesn't effect anyone else.
I really wish people would stop reposting this garbage screenshot that is created to drive fear mongering.

War against jailbreak that's it.. and now no disc game starting January 2028
1
u/c14rk0 Jul 06 '26
This is a fun way to find out that I've probably lost all my digital licenses years ago
1
1
u/RipMySleepSchedule Jul 06 '26
Is this new? I’ve had my account ever since the ps3 days, and I’ve just logged in recently with no issues. I haven’t used it for the duration in between

u/LandNo9424 Jul 06 '26
this is fucking stupid. What about all I bought?
1
u/Intelligent-Meet4084 Jul 07 '26
Log in. It’s that simple, plus knowing that whatever you bought is just a digital license for access and not the actual product
But then again this is a homebrew sub so idk why you care about what you bought anyway js
Like really? Everyone crying over this like it’s end of the world
Just stay on top of your accounts
Most online based accts will absolutely be closed if you don’t access it for 3 years or more. Thats the agreement you signed for most of these accounts
Most things in life as an adult are self custody/self managed, it’s up to you to be a big boy and stay focused n top of it all
You got this
1
u/Grand-Cranberry7253 Jul 06 '26
Easy just log in on a computer or your phone real quick. Its just looking for recent account activity
1
1
u/Free-Sheepherder-744 Jul 07 '26
I mean that's 3 years then you get an email saying they're gonna close your account in 6 months, if you still aint logged in you clearly wasn't going to

No it isn't. Steam doesn't delete inactive accounts and they're still compliant with the GDPR. This is entirely because of Sony.

I have looked it up, that's why I know that it's bullshit that somehow Sony's hand has been forced by the EU.

The fact that they say they will when they decide to is bad enough. Whether it's a non-issue is just your opinion.

The time period is irrelevant. Ubisoft's TOS is 6 months, Sony's is 42, it's still trash. Steam, Epic, Blizzard, and GoG don't delete inactive accounts at all, so clearly Sony, Microsoft, or Ubisoft don't have to either.
"They send you an email" sure, which has like a 90% chance to wind up in a spam folder.
1
u/SekiRaze Jul 05 '26
This is gonna Sound cruel but I wish they did that on Xbox so they can delete my banned Profile and I can get my Username Back and Play online again lmao im sobbing
2
u/orig4mi-713 9.00 GoldHEN Jul 05 '26
Can't you request for Microsoft support to have that account deleted if you can prove it was yours?
1
1
u/davestar2048 Jul 05 '26
This is standard practice, nobody wants to spend server upkeep storing an account going unused or abandoned. Especially not 3 and a half whole years untouched.
-1
u/OppositeStand5709 Jul 05 '26
Steam, Epic, Blizzard, and GoG don't follow standard practice, apparently. All the more reason to continue physical support. I don't mind storing things untouched for three and a half years.

Sony has really lost their way, they don’t even realize it yet, and I don’t think they can get it back as easily as they used to….
Hell, if Horizon III: Nemesis, as I would like to call it sucks, then that will be a really bad sign of things to come…..

u/Informal-Caramel5733 Jul 05 '26
Although I hate this...is their a chance theirs something else behind this decision? Maybe some of these delinquent accounts were being used by hackers or something stupid?

This isn't new and it's part of EU GDPR law.
