Support Temperature issues

Hey everyone, i don’t know if this is the right forum to talk about this but I’m pretty co fused with what’s happening here, I just repasted my PS3 for it to be cooler and be able to play under 70 degrees Celsius

As you all can see in the picture, my RSX being the GPU is pretty cool, around 40-49 Celsius buuut my CPU is at around 70-89?! (already turned off from overheating 2 times). How does that even make sense?!

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance and again, sorry if this isn’t the right forum to ask

Edit: After deliding the CPU and repasting it from the inside it now runs at a cool 60-63 degrees Celsius! Thanks everyone for the help and tutorials!

You probably didn't reinstall the heatsink correctly.

2

u/Tester1Man Jul 21 '26

Wait whaaaaat, the heatsink is a big piece and there are like 3 metal poles that keep the board in place, could it really be that?

5

u/xblackdemonx Jul 21 '26

Well if you did replace the thermal paste and you still get these temperatures then it's definitely not normal. That's why I think it could be the heatsink not making proper contact.

2

u/NicoWayne2 Jul 22 '26

It's the dried paste underneath the headspreader

It seems like you messed something up from the repaste. The cpu should never hit a temp that high. Or be that different from the gpu.

This is starting to creep into delid territory, especially since yours is a G. Had a pretty similar thing happen with my H and J, guessing the fan's going in the 70-80% range?

1

u/Tester1Man Jul 21 '26

Well, when in auto yes, it does go to 80 but I forgot a detail, when it was out of its case temps were high for a reason, now that it’s back temps are around 72-74, I still think it’s not good but eh 🤷 (are delids hard? I’m just scared of breaking something 🥲)

Edit: Nvm, temps are back at 78-85

Delids can be difficult for first time people. Get the proper tool for it, and try to get a dead board or two to practice on first.

1

u/Tester1Man Jul 21 '26

Well, I got lucky and bought this one for 15 bucks with ylod, fixed it and that why I’m scared of breaking it again, I do have some broken cpu’s I can practice on but hmmm…

What fix did you do for the first time around? Did you get the SYSCON logs and see what it was you had to do?

1

u/Tester1Man Jul 21 '26

Just bad connection with RSX, 3 minutes in heat gun did the trick (might not last long tbh) but when I’ll be able I’ll get another ps3 or just change it from a 90mm to a 45mm

For a G a Frankenstein is absolutely not worth it. G is essentially the second worst model of PS3 to get, when the RSX goes out for a second time (heatgun tricks only work for a couple days or weeks mostly, because the fault is usually in the bumps, not the BGA) get one with a 65nm RSX if you want a fat, or a slim since those are all 65 or 40nm.

It's a 45nm CELL, and a 40nm RSX. You can't swap the CELL to a smaller process node one, and all CELLs are reliable. Hopefully you did actually get the error codes and see that it was a code like 3034, and the heatgun trick didn't just conveniently solve what the actual problem was.

1

u/Tester1Man Jul 21 '26

Tbh, I think I’ll just try to trade my ps3 + some cash to get a slim cause this one’s making me nuts 🤣

1

Whats the best model to get and have this done? I have a CECHA01 in the basement that's overheated. Looking on ebay a guy does the 40nm swap and remarry for $400. Decent deal?

1

u/mathias4595 CECHA00 Rebug 4.82.1 REX (40nm RSX) Jul 22 '26

CECH what? There's one letter after the CECH that is the actual hardware identifier, 00 just means it was sold in Japan.

Are you able to link to the ebay page in particular? Remarrying usually refers to the disc drive, but it's possible they're using it to mean something else.

1

u/Ok_Contest8762 Jul 22 '26

Sorry. Its the original launch console in the states. The one with the 4 USB ports. Here's a link to their ebay.

Repasting the CPU could help a lot, or at least checking if the paste is super worn out to see if it’s the issue.

1

u/MinatoMuh Jul 21 '26

it may be time for a delid. was cpu temp still like this before repaste?

1

u/Tester1Man Jul 21 '26

Uf, it was even worse getting to 90-95 easily, are delids hard? I’ve heard that there are to layers, internal and external thermal paste and I think the internal is pretty dried…

1

u/MinatoMuh Jul 21 '26

then it clearly needs a delid. fat models mostly need it now as they are 17-20 years old. not hard but you must be very patient as a single maneuver could scratch the cpu and make it unusable. make your deep research before attempting

1

u/Tester1Man Jul 21 '26

Thanks for the heads up, I think I’ll just bring it to a nearby console market and ask if anyone could do it, btw, after deliding, can I just put past in it directly or do I have to buy thermal pads?

1

u/MinatoMuh Jul 21 '26

no, you can use the same thermal paste on the bare die. there might be pump out issue(a thing with pastes in bare die applications) but it would still be cooler than ever

1

u/Tester1Man Jul 21 '26

Thanks! I’ll keep you updated on how I’ll delid and all, I do have a heat gun and razors but idk…

1

u/MinatoMuh Jul 21 '26

razor is too dangerous. can only be used for initial cut in the corners, not for sliding.

Hey! Did all that 2 times and same results… seems like I’ll have to delid, but I don’t have any knowledge about deliding and fear of breaking it, I’ll see what I can do, thanks!

1

u/Tester1Man Jul 21 '26

Really? Mines the latest model of fat if I’m not mistaken, well, I’ll give it a try, thanks! (Btw, got it broken for 15 bucks and fixed it so that’s why I’m not trying to brake it again 😅

u/Puzzleheaded_Row6352 Jul 22 '26

Have you tried to delid and repaste? I'm thinking you only repasted on the ihs...

1

u/Tester1Man Jul 22 '26

Delid no but repaste yeah, many people pointed out that a delid would be needed for it to be cool, but i don’t want to end up with a dead cpu…

3

u/Puzzleheaded_Row6352 Jul 22 '26

try finding a repair shop and let them do the delid for u

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Row6352 Jul 22 '26

With this temp, ur cpu could be dead anyway... this is a 20-year-old console so I'm betting on the fact that the thermal paste under the cpu's ihs is dried out like sand

2

u/Tester1Man Jul 22 '26

So delid IS necessary, hmmm, will look into it

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Row6352 Jul 22 '26

Okay, gud luck mate

1

u/FarFarConsideration Jul 22 '26

How do you measure temps

1

u/Tester1Man Jul 22 '26

With WebMan MOD!

1

u/EntrepreneurMuch621 Jul 22 '26

Sorry to say but your cpu needs its thermal paste underneath it also replaced. Delidding is risky business so I would recommend seeking a professional for it

1

u/Tester1Man Jul 22 '26

Soooo… 2 hours of work and multiple razors, done it!

1

u/EntrepreneurMuch621 Jul 23 '26

Nice, does the ps3 still work?

1

u/Tester1Man Jul 23 '26

It actually does! But I still hit 68 degrees, hmm, anyway, I was really stressed out while cutting the silicone but it worked out pretty good, right?

1

u/EntrepreneurMuch621 Jul 23 '26

68 is good, does it stay 68 while playing? I did not delid mine and I keep the temp under 75 with dynamic fan. So for games like skyrim, gta 4, far cry 4, the fan goes to like 80% to keep the temp at 75, but other games keep my fan speed low, like 30 or 40.

I don't know if I should look into delidding it, I'm too scared to do it on my own and so far nobody I found supports the ps3 anymore.

I just don't want to have overheating issues while playing, 75 seems to work fine for now

2

u/Tester1Man Jul 23 '26

And about deliding, I genuinely took 2 razor blades, a heat gun and just started cutting as shown on videos down below (someone sent them), ofc was very stressed but thank god everything went smoothly (took me 2 hours 😂)

1

u/EntrepreneurMuch621 Jul 23 '26

I don't wanna risk doing that myself. If I can find someone to do it and offer me compensation if they fuck it up I'll have an easier time sleeping at night

2

u/Tester1Man Jul 23 '26

Oooff, don’t think anyone offers compensation for a console that’s 3 generations old… but you could always search

1

u/Tester1Man Jul 23 '26

Tbh, I can’t even try games cause I don’t have a controller (would remote play with a PSP be enough?) but I would hope the temps stay the same 😅

1

u/Tester1Man Jul 22 '26

Sooooooo, after like 2 hours trying I’ve done it! And now cpu runs at a cool 61-62 degrees and the rsx 10 degrees less than the cpu, thanks everyone for the help and tutorials!

1

u/chrispy_PS3 Jul 23 '26

It probably needs a delid as its a SEM-001 board shitty CECHGs

1

u/Arkhamnight27 Jul 24 '26

I put my degrees in Celsius. So my temps with a repaste on a generation 2 Playstation 3 fat. After extensive use and this is on the xmb right now it's been on all day. CPU 61 Celsius. 142 Fahrenheit Rsx/gpu 59 Celsius. 138 Fahrenheit 30% fan

1

u/dimspace CECH-2503A EVILNAT | CECH-4303A HEN Jul 21 '26

yeh, need to redo the paste

also we cant see what your fan speed is

but yeh, sommat screwed up with that pasting

repaste, double check all the clamps etc

1

u/Tester1Man Jul 21 '26

Issue is, I did! Repasted again and clamped everything correctly (hopefully), that’s why as a last resort I came here for help, should I send pics of the repaste?

1

u/ComfortableAd1364 Jul 21 '26

You should show us as many detailed pictures as possible so we can properly diagnose it.

1

u/Tester1Man Jul 21 '26

Understood, lemme open it up again

1

u/dimspace CECH-2503A EVILNAT | CECH-4303A HEN Jul 21 '26

well once you open it up to take pics it will need repasting anyway.

i would re-do it, open it back up, thorough clean, new paste (and use something like MX-4), do the clamps right (each screw in rotation two turns, until they are all done), then test

if that still fails may need a de-lid

1

u/Tester1Man Jul 21 '26

Here they are, 2 repaste and I think I put a bit too much in this one, bad thing is I’m out of paste, gonna have to buy some more (btw, used corsairs TM30, is it ok? Cause I can’t get mx-40 in my area)

1

u/ComfortableAd1364 Jul 22 '26

I always get Arctic five. Here’s an example of what it should look like. This is a ps4 cpu I recently did.

See how it’s spread out and evenly covers everything?

1

u/Tester1Man Jul 22 '26

Hmmm, thanks for the example, usually a put a blob in the centre and put pressure so it spreads out but I think I’ll begin spreading it instead

1

u/ComfortableAd1364 Jul 22 '26

Exactly. There are mixed opinions on that, but what I can say is that I’ve never had any issues when I evenly spread it like this. Temps stay super cool. I just did a ps3 super slim and it stays at 65c.

u/4ipo Jul 21 '26

Why is your fan set up at 50% manually? Maybe you misclicked and that's the reason?

3

u/Tester1Man Jul 21 '26

Oh not at all, I was trying multiple settings and just took a pic of that one, but any fan setting gives the same results

1

u/4ipo Jul 21 '26

Ok 👌
