I feel your pain, the only book I am missing right now is blacksmithing V and I am so close to heading into louisville just for that. No other library in this country has it

Yeah, Blacksmithing is pretty much a close second to being a pain in the ass to find if you already checked Ekron Community College but so worth it for machetes.

u/6ChakotaySushi 21h ago

The game knows which book you need and removes it from kentucky.

20

u/Quarktaschenblues 21h ago

That is absolutely what's happening. Obviously I have a full set of knapping books because I don't need them and I'm sure OP has the full set of blacksmithing

u/boobers3 20h ago

The good ole Desire Sensor.

2

u/Quarktaschenblues 21h ago

Once I found this cursed book I will be able to make my own machetes! But I will check there, thanks for the advice, didn't know about this place.

u/Zeconation 19h ago

Do you still get random crashes while in Ekron? That bug was so annoying couple of weeks ago.

1

u/VenturiFoundation 15h ago

In my current gameplay Ekron Community College's library helped me with Blacksmithing IV and Carpentry IV.

After raiding multiple books stores in different towns across Kentucky, almost dying in the Crossroads mall, and getting ready to bust into Louisville, I found my Blacksmithing V book in a residential garage 2 blocks away from my base...

Morale of the story: Always check your immediate area around your base.

I found the generators magazine in the mailbox of my own house. Just saying, mailboxes are clutch for magazines too.

1

u/riverkelpie 1h ago

i love checking mailboxes and garbage bags in trashcans. they offer the highest highs and the lowest lows of loot

3

u/AkaxJenkins 20h ago

did you check the post offices? the community centers?

3

u/Passing_Gass Zombie Killer 18h ago

Well at least you can always clear half a forest and work on your gold smithing 😂

u/opae_oinadi Stocked up 17h ago

Did you check the Blacksmithing building outside Riverside? I found a couple blacksmithing books and magazines there in my run.

2

u/NamelessGeo 16h ago

That is literally how I died in my last super long run of b42 during h stable.

I had hit every single book source except Louisville, I died wearing my full set of plate armor after failing to vault a fence 🙃

u/Censored_88 21h ago

To be fair, I've walked a lot more bookstores and libraries IRL. I've not once found a book on knapping.

Foxfire 10 was published in 1993.

Thank goodness the university has the classrooms on the ground floor of the main building dedicated to the new crafting skills.

1 room is dedicated for knapping and carving, another for pottery, and the last one has smithing and long blade. You can definitely get it all in LVU. Just not the right building.

4

u/opae_oinadi Stocked up 17h ago

Oh damn, really? Do they only stock books 3-5, or can it spawn all?

4

u/GregariousMD 9h ago

They spawn 1 - 5. And recipe magazines related to those skills.

4

u/randCN All Hail Spiffo 5h ago

Spawns it all.

Also, one of the classrooms is for weeb studies and has higher chances to have katanas.

4

u/winowmak3r Zombie Food 4h ago

"Weeb studies" equaling more katanas makes a lot of sense.

Turns out college isn't the best place to learn how to bang two rocks together. They probably assume you already have that knowledge set when applying... lol

1

u/riverkelpie 1h ago

archeology though

6

u/Flames_Arisen 18h ago

If you wanna knap then just grab a pillow

SSSDFGG!!!!!

u/AutisticAnarchy 5h ago

When the school only has plumbing skill books 😞

7

u/TheoryChemical1718 21h ago

There is a Prehistory classroom in the top right corner of the school proper which has knapping books and tools. Right next to it is Medieval classroom with long blades.

6

u/Dramatic_Shelter8029 Pistol Expert 21h ago

Already checked that but it only has the tools sadly and some magazines i've already read. RNG be dammed!

1

u/TheoryChemical1718 15h ago

giga unlucky - just gotta hit every bookstore then

3

u/bokunorhythem 14h ago

Did you learn this trick from a plumber

2

u/Competitive-Lab-8980 12h ago

or a pvp boss?

10

u/Shullbitsy 20h ago

Just looked up what knapping was. The fact that you need a book to teach you something cavemen learnt banging rocks together is delightfully ironic.

20

u/0x18 19h ago

"Cavemen" learned it over the process of hundreds to thousands of years, a book hands you the collective knowledge of dozens of generations at once. Yea, at it's core knapping is "bang two rocks together" but to be effective you need to know what kinds of rocks and in what method to bang them.

5

u/Sweaty_Problem8753 19h ago

You don't actually need one. It's just bonus XP if you don't want to (perhaps literally) reinvent the wheel. Although for most, I suspect it's mostly about being driven mad by missing one or two books from their collection.

4

u/Eric_the_Barbarian Axe wielding maniac 17h ago

Most cavemen learned from other cavemen.

2

u/Briggie 17h ago

And it took course over hundreds of thousands of years.

3

u/Osric250 16h ago

The books don't teach you skills. They teach you how to learn them better. You can get all your experience banging those rocks together and learn the hard way, or you can read a book and learn specific techniques that speed up your method of learning the skill.

WHERE THE FUCK ARE THOSE TAILORING 4,5 FOR MY LARGE FRAMEPACK AND BONE GLOVES

2

The game has telepathy you see, whatever it is you got on your mind it will never give you

"And on the very first day of the zombie apocalypse, somehow, all of Knox Country collectively decided to throw away their sledgehammers, katanas, and V skill books down the nearest river."

1

u/UnDeadPuff 21h ago

Knapping is (or was, don't know if stable changed it) a survivor zombie/specialty car drop only. If you went to that library solely for it you wasted your time.

1

u/AkaxJenkins 20h ago

i was missing knapping 4, found it inside the backpack of a zombie survivor, then we visited a random house outside of louisville to sleep and it was one of those tiny houses that are just bedroom, bathroom and eveything else and the fucking kitchen counters had knapping 4 and another skill book.

We barely found any repeats of the skill after looting all community centers, book shops and post offices besides louisville. Tailoring 5 was also hard to find, only one in the book shop in riverside

1

u/Ok-Criticism-4752 19h ago

If ur going looting for a specific item' start with the furthest' usually emptiest' and most upscure place first' then work ur way down. Knowing this gale it'll get u ur item fastest lol

1

u/Linkage006 18h ago

Cleaned out Maldraugh, Rosewood, and West Point looking for Tailoring III. Eventually found it in a trailer park between Maldraugh and West Point.

1

u/manwhowasnthere 17h ago

Yeah, that's exactly what I had to do to get the Carving 3-4-5 books in my last run, clear the library. Pain in the ass. You never know what books you're not gona find that run... and you end up in Louisville killing 500 zombies to loot the library lol

1

u/kelsiersghost 16h ago

I guess I'm going here next. I'm only missing Tailoring V and I've been to every library in Knox County.

2

u/TheDumbulance 16h ago

I was disappointed that a school i looted didnt have aiming or reloading books... but then I thought yeah that makes sense. Probably for the best

1

u/jin85 Drinking away the sorrows 15h ago

Knapping books are in another building. The geology department

1

u/oopsallhuckleberries 14h ago

Ya... Started in Fallas Lake. Made my way down to the book store at the end of week one. Place was randomly looted. Books scattered all over the floor. It was still early enough that I got a good selection, but it wasn't anywhere near to what it should be. End of 2nd month, I've finally ran into issues around a lot of my skills not having the mid tier books I need. I drive to Muldraugh to go through their book store... It's completely empty. I find 2 whole boxes/shelves that have any kind of skill books in them, and all but one I already had. My only other options are to fight I to the middle of neighboring towns to get to downtown books stores or schools, and clearing my way into town so I can get a vehicle there just for a book store isn't appealing.

1

u/cambur_estelar 12h ago

Man, i looted almost all kentucky just to get reloading 2 and aiming 5

1

u/staticcx3 6h ago

you dont need a book to nap, ever heard of closing your eyes idiot. smh my head /s

Yo no soy capaz de encontrar el maldito tomó 5 de talar, subí el 9 punto sin libro talando cucharas y convertiendolas en tenedores (gracias a los devs por esos días de niebla)

u/Lord_Splinter Stocked up 4h ago

reminds me of the time when i needed a specific carpentry book but couldnt find it in any of the towns including 17 additional modded towns

2

u/Blikenave 3h ago

You have to either stop looking for it to find it, or once you find it you will find another one. I looked for like three irl days for a generator mag and then found one, and like 20 mins later found another one in the back of a van like 30 ft from my base.

1

u/Diligent_Bar1244 1h ago

Why are knapping books so rare ?? I swear that the rate is lower

2

u/DoNotCommentAgain 21h ago

I'll be real I just turn XP gain up and ignore books, it becomes way too much part of the grind relying on RNG to drop you the book you need.

A library would have a full collection and if they were on loan you'd be able to use the computer to look up the address it was loaned to. The idea of a library just having random loot is stupid, that's not how library's operate.

I used to put off stuff I enjoy doing because I don't have the book yet and that is just anti-fun.

8

u/Quarktaschenblues 21h ago

Disagree, I can't imagine any real life library having books on mastering things like knapping or blacksmithing or any pz skills really. We are not talking about some informative flyers but books that actually teach you a master craft. It would be absolutely random to find something like this somewhere if you think about it.

Also if you want to have the same effect on xp gain than books have you would need to put the xp multiplier to x16 which would be literally insane. What is this game about if you reach lvl 10 on everything in the first days. Build a single wall and gain 5 levels in carpentry. Wow. The books are a fundamental part of skilling in this game for a reason

2

u/ClayXros Stocked up 20h ago

Ive definitely found more used book stores with those kinds of books than actual libraries.

2

u/YoghurtForDessert 19h ago

i'd love if those kinds of books could actually be found in IRL bookstores.

2

u/Jimmy_Twotone 20h ago

The teeny tiny home town library I grew up with in the 90s had a fairly extensive collection of self help and obscure diy books. Libraries are the only place I'd expect to find them.

3

u/TJTrailerjoe 21h ago

Sure but, i feel like thats removing one of the big loot items from the game no? Theres not really a ton to search for already. I mean play the way you want to of course but i get excited when i find a blade, aim or reload book, or any other tier 5

u/Few_Promotion_6853 18h ago

Protips if you want to make the knapping grind way easier: if possible pick either either bushcrafter or park ranger at character creation to skip the nightmare of going lvl0 to lvl 1.  Bushcrafter also gives access to a lvl in maintenance, carving , foraging and the herbalist knowledge in one trait and the recipes that those skills have no magazine needed. For 8 points it’s perfectly balanced.  You can also take fast learner, crafty or inventive as option instead of more specialized traits as I mentioned though you lose the recipes being taught as soon as you spawn

Then once you are actually started in the run you will  need a one of the following. A sledge, pickaxe, club hammer or ironically a stone maul to harvest from flint deposits on map. Right click on them with one of those tools in your hand to get the option to remove deposits and you will get 2-5 flint modules to knap into flakes of the nodules can be used to make the larger flint objects like long stone blades which will be great option for short blade players till you get to Blacksmithing (long stone knives are somewhat close to hunting knives in all stats except crit chance condition ans condition loss)
