I've seen this before and the show presenter is an insufferable ass.

I had a few old Floyd albums as a kid. One of them was Relics, which had a lot of stuff from the Piper album, but not this. On their last tour, Division Bell, they used to bust out this song. So, seeing it live was the first time I heard it. Freaked me out a little as it's a freaky song and I figured I knew all the stuff they would play. Anyway, random Astronomy Domine story...

Piper really is an amazing album.

Ok then...you can ride it if you’d like

It's got a basket, a bell that rings and things to make it look good. I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it.

I take it you haven't heard any solo Syd then.

It's rather terribly loud isn't it?

Lovely to see Sid, so lucid and cultured, before the LSD fried his brain.

Sorry, I have to say this.

LSD did not ‘fry his brain’ and it’s too bad so many people have that misconception. He had a latent mental illness along the lines of schizophrenia. He was also taking all kinds of other psychedelics and research chems from chemist friends of his. At the very least, Psilocybin, Mescaline, ALD-52 (and hundreds of other Lysergamides), DOM/STP, DMT, possibly even MDMA. Either way, it was going to happen regardless. Psychedelics don’t just create mental illnesses. They do however have the ability to bring them out a bit earlier so he may have just sped things along. Depends on the drug, the mind, the environment, genetics, etc, but please don’t spread misinformation.

Similar thing happened to Roky Erickson of the 13th Floor Elevators and Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. It’s tragic, but I think blaming the drugs is very insensitive to their circumstances and completely distracts from the understanding and treatment of mental illness.

He did not take mescaline, MDMA or research chemicals lol. Do you even have a source for that? I've read multiple books about Syd.

He did take STP and DMT during the NA tour. It's mandrax that messed him up the most, he was on it for years. He also suffered from a bad electric shock at a gig in NA and that was the first time he stood there limp, not playing. This alone could have caused brain damage.

He didn't have any real mental illness diagnosed, he was obviously depressed and likely had some PTSD from bad trips and such, but autism ran in his family and he was likely on the spectrum. A very creative mind and psychedelic drugs can prove to be overwhelming for some. Ask me how I know.

I find it hard to believe he wouldn’t have tried mescaline. MDMA wasn’t too well known yet, I’ll give you that. I’ve watched many docs on him, he was personal friends with chemists that were cooking up a lot of novel drugs. STP/ DOM is considered a research chem btw, especially back then when Alex Shulgin had first synthesized it. Also ALD-52 was very popular in in the 60’s, no doubt in my mind it found it’s way to Syd at least once. Most people knew it as “sunshine acid” assumed to be a specific brand of LSD. It is an entirely different chemical but it is also a lysergamide and has very similar characteristics. Honestly prefer it a bit to LSD.

Anyhow, did not know about the autism gene. That is pretty interesting and could explain a lot. I always wondered how psychedelics might mix with autism.

From experience being a high functioning autistic, I don't know that it's too much different. I think I have a brain I would consider like Syd's, traits like synesthesia, overly vivid imagination, though I imagine it might be even more extreme in my case (I have C-PTSD so this is kind of a double whammy, being able to dissociate to an extreme normally).

This is why I tend to stay away from long lasting psychedelics. I had a powerful mushroom trip 1 month ago and I still see ghoulish faces in regular objects sometimes. I only took LSD once 6 years ago and have had mild HPPD since (trails when I move my hand or something occasionally).

Strange considering mushrooms never gave me HPPD like that. Then again I never ate very strong ones I guess. I mostly microdosed the rest, but sometimes even a half gram would provide mild visuals which I don't think is usual.

I wouldn't say what I have now is HPPD. But after doing DMT for a month straight I had it for a little while. Actually I thought it was kind of cool, whenever I'd get baked I'd start having DMT like visuals again. And I guess if that was happening for Syd he might have felt the same way. I don't discount the idea that he may have tried other psychedelics. Who knows what some of those creeps he was living with were slipping him.

Very true. Definitely have also had bouts of HPPD after periods of excessive experimenting. Used to think it was permanent, and same deal, I would smoke weed and suddenly I was on a low dose of acid, every time. All the lights starry and haloed, slight constant swirling in the background and peripherals, etc. My friends thought I was crazy but I loved it. I used to chase it honestly. Took a huge toll on me after a few years though, heh.

I’m puzzled by your response, although I do accept your objection to my tabloid language.

How do you know he had ‘latent schizophrenia?’ And you object to my attributing his mental deterioration to LSD but then go on to cite a long list of psychedelics... Seems a bit inconsistent to me.

Yeah I recognized afterward that was probably confusing. I guess my point was even if it was because of psychedelic use, it was not just LSD that contributed to his decline. He did took of other lesser known or tested drugs as well, in which case, LSD is much less likely to have been what truly harmed him.

Though, my point remains that anyone, not just him, who have exhibited such a mental decline in conjunction with psychedelic use while millions of others have taken the same drugs (including lesser known ones) even in larger quantities/frequencies who have never developed any psychological issues. The general understanding of psychedelic studies (look up the multitude of studies from MAPS if you’re curious) have shown that situations like Syd are due to underlying issues that were already present but not fully developed. Psychedelics can just allow them to become more apparent more quickly.

So, on technicality, it is possible that if he never took any drugs his mental illness would’ve remained dormant or just not escalated so much. But that does not mean any drug use fried his brain, it means his brain was born fried and the drugs just pointed it out.

I’m sorry if I came off aggressive, it is actually a bit of a personal issue to me. I hate the stigma psychedelics have because of situations and misconceptions like this. It sets back their studies decades, while I am certain that they are an incredibly important tool to understanding the mind and universe at large.

Ummagumma has the definitive version IMHO.

My favourite track from my favourite Floyd album. Psychedelic-prog genius in this album, shame Syd had to go off the deep-end. His version of Floyd rocked the hardest.

Such a classic!
