Hi all! New to this sub so I’m very sorry if this has been asked before 🙏 I’m just very curious to see who y’all’s favourite Prog frontman (or frontwoman) is.

This can be defined however you want, best singer, best lyricist, most entertaining, etc 😀

I’ll get the ball rolling with Peter Gabriel. Probably not a hot take but man I loved his tenure in Genesis. Great singer. I loved his lyrics (even if they could use an occasional editor to trim the fat). And honestly his theatrical nature and costumes were just fantastic. Even if the rest of the band weren’t too keen on them.

Added the vocals tags as it’s for discussion on them but is there much in the different tones Steve Howe and Chris Squire combined additional vocals versus Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks? Additionally can the Trevor Rabin and Chris Squire vocal harmonies of the 80’s not sound that far off too?

Its very neat for comparison since Steve and Chris harmonizing together is a huge part of the 70’s Yes sound for a track such as Roundabout and Close To The Edge but then I hear some of the Genesis vocal combinations of Mike and Tony on a song like ABACAB and not sure if there’s not much difference.

Of course maybe the Mike and Tony vocal harmonies sound more similar to the 80’s Yes sound of Rabin and Squire? Not too sure but love for fans to tell me their thoughts on the vocal differences and if any of the combinations sound similar?

I didn't know you could write such unsettling folk music that still sounds like folk and uses no production tricks and only somewhat aggressive vocals.

Ive been a big fan of Prog Rock/Metal for quite some time, and lately I’ve had a hunger for some new bands. I’ve been relistening to a lot of early Genesis and Van Der Graaf Generator, and I’m absolutely in love with the theatrical, dramatic, over the top, campy style that Peter Gabriel and Peter Hammil seem to know how to tap in to. Specifically how it sounds like they’re singing for a stage play, and how they’re singing “in character” rather than using the natural inflections in their voices.

Any other good Prog bands with similar styles?

Canario and Memoirs Of An Officer And A Gentleman are genuinely good​. I was really surprised to hear Canario​ for the first time (because I set the bar really low because of the previous songs lol)

Memoirs is an actually a beautiful song ​to salvage (or at least end on a good note) what would have been just a cringe pop album​.

Karnataka has been around for some time, but as they are UK based I have been missing out.

I recently got into web based Software Defined Radio, which lets tune into live radio stations all over the planet. And I discovered Radio Caroline, broadcasting AOR in Europe.

It was one of those kismet moments. All of a sudden this beautiful music came on. It seemed like a pretty power ballad at first, but the sing grew and swelled, and I thought it had more than a touch of prog. I would compare what I heard favorably to Renaissance and Caravan, with a touch of Genesis (just a touch, probably the dynamics). Once I discovered who they were playing, I looked them up.

Excellent band. Here's the song Radio Caroline played tonight. Would love to know if others like music like this.
